Riley Hospital for Children is seeking a dynamic and collaborative nursing leader to join our Perioperative Services team as an Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) for the Operating Room. This is an exciting opportunity to support one of the nation's premier pediatric healthcare organizations while helping lead a highly specialized surgical environment that includes 16 operating rooms serving a broad range of pediatric surgical specialties.
As an Assistant Nurse Manager, you will partner closely with nursing leadership, surgeons, anesthesia providers, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure exceptional patient outcomes, operational excellence, and an outstanding team member experience. This role is ideal for a clinically strong nurse leader who is passionate about quality, safety, staff development, and advancing pediatric surgical care.
Position Summary
The Assistant Nurse Manager of Clinical Operations combines clinical expertise, contemporary leadership practices, and the principles of the IU Health Way to achieve exceptional clinical, operational, and patient experience outcomes.
Working in partnership with the Operating Room Manager, the ANM helps create an environment where nurses and team members are empowered to deliver safe, high-quality, family-centered care. The role provides frontline leadership and operational oversight for a department that supports patients and families around the clock, including weekends and holidays.
Key responsibilities include supporting daily perioperative operations, staffing and scheduling, quality and safety initiatives, regulatory readiness, professional governance activities, team member engagement, and performance coaching. The ANM serves as a visible leader who fosters collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement across the department.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with the Unit Manager to develop and execute strategic action plans related to:
- Quality and patient safety outcomes
- Clinical excellence and evidence-based practice
- Care affordability and operational efficiency
- Team member engagement and retention
- Patient and family experience
- Provide daily operational leadership for the Operating Room, ensuring safe and efficient patient flow and resource utilization.
- Support staffing, scheduling, productivity management, and deployment of resources to meet patient care needs.
- Conduct off-shift and weekend rounding to maintain leadership visibility and support staff across all shifts.
- Coach, mentor, and develop team members while promoting accountability, professional growth, and a culture of continuous learning.
- Lead and support quality improvement initiatives, regulatory compliance activities, accreditation readiness, and patient safety programs.
- Collaborate with physicians, anesthesia providers, perioperative leaders, and interdisciplinary partners to optimize surgical services and patient outcomes.
- Promote shared governance, professional nursing practice, and evidence-based care delivery.
- Analyze operational and clinical performance metrics and assist in implementing improvement strategies.
Qualifications:
- Graduate of accredited school of nursing.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree required.
- Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license.
- Required Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
- Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
- OR and/or leadership experience is strongly preferred.
- Pediatric experience preferred.
