Responsibilities

Assists surgeons with surgical procedures within the operating room under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, including conveying sterile instruments and supplies used in basic to complex surgical procedures.  Adheres to policies, procedures, and regulations to ensure compliance and patient safety.   


Qualifications

Job Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program or clinical-based program.
  • Anatomy and Physiology, sterile technique, medical terminology, instrumentation, and medical equipment knowledge.
  • Sterilization techniques; Operating Room instruments and supplies.
  • Medical Terminology knowledge.
  • Six (6) months of experience in an operating room or ambulatory surgery unit.
  • BLS certification must be obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care.

Preferred Job Requirements:

  • Certified OR Tech.
  • 1 year OR experience.
  • CORT or CST.

A Brief Overview Performs a variety of preparatory, scrubbing and related duties necessary to provide patient care in the Operating Room specialty service capacity. Assist with surgical cases in all surgical specialties. Essential Functions Prepares the operating room by reviewing case cart and supplying it with supplies and instruments to provide appropriate patient care Assembles supplies and equipment for scheduled procedure according to the physician’s preferences and the procedure Inspects equipment for proper working condition Maintain sterile practices when opening packages and preparing for the procedure Prepare for specialty cases and maintain up-to-date knowledge of advancements and techniques. Participate in time out/sign out processes Maintains the sterile field during the procedure. Follow principles of aseptic technique and appropriate operating/procedure room procedures following AORN guidelines. Scrubs to assist the surgeon in the completion of surgical procedures by demonstrating a working knowledge of surgical instrumentation and equipment needed for a variety of procedures. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, passing instruments and providing sterile items in an efficient manner, as directed by the surgeon Practices sharps safety techniques (safety zone, safe passing) Performs appropriate counts prior to the operation and before incision is closed Prepares and labels fluids and medications on the sterile field Prepares specimens for pathologic analysis Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization Assists operating room team with environmental cleaning and case turnovers Maintains availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays Assists in maintaining adequate supplies in the operating room for immediate access during procedure. Candidates with the Surgical Technologist certification fulfill this requirement without the experience.
