Job Summary

Do you have an interest in skin cancer surgery that combines dermatological practices with oncology? A medical assistant position in the Cutaneous Surgery and Oncology/Mohs Ambulatory Care Unit does just that. We are a fast-paced, highly structured outpatient surgical unit that caters to our patients' needs to the highest degree. Responsibilities*

Patient Intake

  • Responds to general patient inquiries about clinic operations within their scope of practice.
  • Rooms patients (virtually and in person) and performs standard patient intake including taking vitals and other measurements, medical histories, medication reconciliation documentation, form(s) preparation, relevant screenings, following predetermined protocols and other tasks as assigned.
  • May obtain medical records and prepare medical information and reports for the appointment (e.g. reviewing Patient Summary Information, updating prescription information, etc.).
  • Performs room preparation and turnover task(s) assigned, including managing stretchers and beds where appropriate.


Patient Care

  • Medication preparation and/or administration per standing orders or UMHS and Ambulatory Care policies and guidelines, and competency.
  • Administers injections and immunizations appropriate per competency and Ambulatory Care policy and guidelines.
  • Performs medical laboratory/Point of Care (POC) testing and assists providers per competency or formal training with direct patient care that may include treatments, tests, or procedures.
  • Quality Control testing of POC equipment.
  • May manage forms and consent (virtual and in person) and provide routine patient instruction forms assigned by the clinic and within their scope of practice.
  • Contributes to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, faculty, and staff by following established procedures, policies, and guidelines.
  • Enter orders per policy co-signature required per standing order or Best Practice Alert (BPA).
  • Queue and pend medication renewals.
  • Take pictures and/or upload media (excluding ophthalmology) according to Ambulatory Care guidelines.
  • Observes patient status, report changes, and document accordingly.
  • Acts as a chaperone during sensitive exams, diagnostic, and therapeutic treatments, or upon patient request.
  • Informs patients of normal test results within their scope of practice
  • .Documents into MiChart within scope of practice.


Administrative And Clinical Workflow Support

  • Efficiently and effectively prepares and organizes clinical and procedure rooms with appropriate equipment and supplies.
  • Continuously tracks the clinic patient flow, identifies holdups, and notifies patients if the schedule runs behind.
  • Cleans, stocks, and organizes clinic spaces (exam and supply rooms),
  • Maintains inventory and may manage PAR levels when appropriate.
  • Processes forms and in basket messages through MiChart.
  • May assist with prescription or procedure prior authorizations within scope of practice.
  • Disinfects and maintains equipment between cases according to Instructions for Use, policies, and guidelines; removes equipment not needed for next case and stores it appropriately.
  • Transport and prepares surgical instruments for sterile processing.
  • Supports orientation and/or shadowing opportunities as assigned.
  • Participate in regulatory readiness processes.
  • Participation in Daily Management Systems huddles, staff meetings, quality improvement activities, and other Ambulatory Care initiatives as assigned (such as Safety Liaison, MIChart upgrades, or operational meetings)
  • Responsible if assigned and trained to vaccine reconciliation including Vaccines for Children (VFC) and all duties associated with this duty.
  • Perform other related duties within scope of practice as assigned.


Required Qualifications*

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant program OR current enrollment in, or completion of coursework in a healthcare professional program (e.g., medical school, PA program, nursing program, or related clinical training) ORan equivalent combination of education and experience (1-3 years).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of clinical workflows, patient care, and basic medical terminology
  • Provisional Dermatology Technician Certification is required within 3 months of hire


Desired Qualifications*

  • Certified Dermatology Technician
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a sterile field and adhere to strict aseptic technique during invasive and semi-invasive procedures
  • Experience preparing procedure rooms, including setup of surgical instruments, supplies, and specialized equipment
  • Proven ability to ensure all procedural equipment is properly functioning prior to and during procedures
  • Strong knowledge of scheduling workflows, including coordinating procedures across multiple departments
  • Experience collaborating with schedulers, prior authorization teams, and clinic staff to support complex procedural scheduling
  • Minimum 1 year of clinical medical assistant experience in an outpatient procedural, surgical, or interventional setting
  • Minimum 4 months' work experience with immunizations or injections
  • Documented history of excellent punctuality and attendance

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

  • 8-hour shifts, Monday through Friday, with rotating week-long mandatory overtime coverage amongst current staff to ensure continuation of patient care as directed by management
  • May be expected to cover other dermatology locations on an as needed basis

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Responsibilities The Clinical Partner (Medical Assistant) will assist Harmony Cares Primary Care Physician, Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Teams in the delivery of primary health care and patient care management in a residential setting. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Supports mission, vision and core values which include but not limited to delivering compassionate support, attention and assistance to patients, families and members of the team Support Patient Care through Clinical Partnership with Nurse Practitioners, Physicians, and Care Management Teams Coordinates daily travel itinerary and transports clinicians to scheduled appointments Prepares patients for examination and treatment; May at times include preparing patients for minor procedures Secures patient consent forms, records patient care documentation accurately and in a timely manner Coordinates patient care as directed by Clinicians, company standards and policies Respects patient confidentiality at all times and treats patients with courtesy and respect Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture only), EKG or any other procedure as requested by Clinician Labels, stores and properly packages specimens for lab delivery Assists In identifying and closure of quality gaps Documentation and updating of patient care plans, as well as SDoH (Social Determinants of Health) and other assessments within the patient chart or electronic medical record Required to maintain compliance with CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments), OSHA, and HIPPAA guidelines Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatment (supply inventory, medical bag and car) (where applicable) Ensure company vehicle is clean and proper periodic maintenance schedule is followed (where applicable) Attends required meetings and in-services In this role you may work with. . . Primary Care Physicians Nurse Practitioners Clinical Teams Patients Patients Families Qualifications Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience High School graduate or GED equivalent Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy, EMT, related medical education/training program or 1 year of experience serving as a Medical Assistant or Phlebotomist Current CPR certification that meets Company guidelines Knowledge of medical terminology Basic computer literacy, including EMR, iPad, and GPS experience Strong interpersonal communication and customer service skills Must maintain a valid driver’s license and good driving record Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Experience Certified Medical Assistant Six months of experience in patient care, preferably geriatric care Strong Phlebotomy skills Desire and ability to obtain MA certification with 180 days of hire Conditions of this role to be aware of. . .
