What you'll do

The Summer Nurse Intern is an unlicensed nursing student enrolled currently in a nursing program. Under the direct supervision of an assigned RN preceptor, the student may perform clinical nursing skills and apply and document components of the nursing process appropriate for a student extern. Our Nurse Intern program assists select nursing students in gaining a greater level of self-confidence, communication, critical thinking skills, time-management skills and clinical competence. This is achieved through reinforcing the fundamentals of nursing education, theoretical knowledge, awareness of the role of the professional nurse and the understanding of organizational structure and operations. As the Nurse Intern is not a registered nurse, they will not administer medications in any form, initiate blood transfusions or administer or monitor any blood products.

 

  • Performs patient treatments that are within the scope of unlicensed assistive personnel under the supervision of an RN
  • Obtains and records vital signs (not including blood administration vital signs) and collects specimens as directed by the RN.
  • Provides ADLs, including but not limited to toileting, hygiene, monitoring intake and output, meal serving, setting up, and feeding patients, measured by patient and preceptor feedback.
  • Provides mobility activities including range of motion exercises, transferring, and ambulating of patients, as measured by direct preceptor and supervisory observation.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly environment of patient care areas as evidenced by preceptor observation.
  • Communicates patients’ needs to appropriate personnel and seeks assistance when necessary to meet those needs.
  • Answers patients’ requests for assistance in a timely fashion, as noted by preceptor and patient feedback.
  • Reports patients’ needs and relevant patient care data to the RN, as measured by preceptor.
  • Acquires knowledge and skills under the direct supervision of an RN preceptor.
  • Performs patient care and treatments
  • Applies the nursing process to patient care situations and documents care delivered appropriately.
  • Follows Bassett Healthcare Network policies and procedures.
  • Follows standards related to patient safety.
  • Performs other duties as requested and observed by supervisor or manager.

 


What we need from you

Education/Qualifications:

  • Nursing student enrolled in a college program, entering their second, third, or fourth year, required

Experience:

  • Previous experience in a health-related position or as a nursing assistant/patient care technician preferred

Certification:

  • Current BLS from American Heart Association or another approved program at start of job, required

Physical Requirements:
