Hours: 12-hour shifts – 7:00pm to 7:00am 

Location: Providence Medical Center - Kansas City, KS

 

 

The Stepdown Registered Nurse specializes in providing care for patients who are recovering from cardiac procedures, surgeries, or events like heart attacks. The Step-Down RN offer an intermediate level of care between the ICU and the general medical-surgical floor. Step-Down Nurses are responsible for close monitoring, medication administration, patient education, and care coordination.  

 

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (includes, but not limited to): 

  • Monitor patients' cardiac status, vital signs, and telemetry data to detect any changes or abnormalities, which is crucial for patients recovering from cardiac procedures, heart attacks, or other cardiac conditions 
  • Administer medications as prescribed by physicians, including intravenous drugs, cardiac medications, and pain management medications 
  • Perform assessments of patients' cardiac status, including physical assessments, review medical histories, and evaluate symptoms 
  • Provide education to patients and their families about cardiac conditions, treatment plans, medications, lifestyle modifications, and self-care practices 
  • React promptly to cardiac emergencies, including arrhythmias, cardiac arrests, or respiratory distress, necessitating immediate implementation of emergency procedures, administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and aiding in defibrillation and other crucial life-saving measures

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

 

  • Must have current and valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State.
  • BCLS upon hire and maintain current.

Additional Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 

  • ACLS within 30 days of hire and maintained current.

Additional Qualifications That Are a Plus: 

  • Previous Acute Care hospital experience preferred.

Attends and maintains mandatory training in safe patient handling, trained in safe lifting techniques, includes but not limited to 1) Appropriate use of lifting devices and equipment, 2) Five areas of body exposure: vertical, lateral, bariatric repositioning and ambulation, 3) Use of lifting devices to handle patients safely. Uses professional judgment and clinical assessment in safe patient handling that are consistent with Safe Patient Handling policies. Uses two patient identifiers consistently when drawing lab, administering medications and performing procedures. Follows medication reconciliation policy consistently. Does not use unacceptable abbreviations in documentation (uses read back on all telephone orders.) Monitors authentication and validation of telephone orders within 24 hours by the physician. Ensures consistently that all clinical alarms, i.e. cardiac monitors are set with the appropriate parameters for the patient and are audible at all times. Qualifications Education and Work Experience Current and valid state RN License. Current BLS certificate upon hire and maintain current. Basic Arrythmia Interpretation within 30 days of hire. Current ACLS certificate 30 days upon hire and maintain current. Previous Acute Care hospital experience preferred. Ventilator Management experience preferred.
