Overview of Position:

The Emergency Department Nurse Supervisor (EDNS) is a frontline leader who supports and works under the direction of the Nurse Manager in overseeing daily operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality emergency care. The EDNS works closely with the Manager with supervisory duties, responsibility, and accountability for the 24/7 operation of the Emergency department. They act as a resource for staff, manage patient flow, and maintain compliance with regulatory standards. The EDNS will provide direct oversight of all nursing staff on assigned shifts and collaborate with all ancillary departments.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1.    Supervise and coordinate nursing activities during assigned shifts and acts as a liaison for all staff and providers.
2.    Manage staffing assignments, breaks, and coverage based on patient acuity and volume.
3.    Monitor ED throughput metrics including the following but not limited to arrival to roomed, arrival to provider, LWBS, boarding time, and initiate surge protocols such as ED decompression plan, ED code support, ED code expedite, and ED code yellow as needed.
4.    Forecast bed needs/boarding and coordinate with inpatient units, bed placement, and hospitalist teams to expedite placement through the admission, discharge, and transfer process.
5.    Maintains competency to assess patient conditions and provide direct patient care during high-acuity or surge situations.
6.    Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities related to patient care and normal procedures in the Emergency Department within own scope or practice as demonstrated by completion of annual competencies. 
7.    Support triage accuracy and prioritization of care.
8.    Coach and mentor all nursing staff in collaboration with ED educator and manager.
9.    Assist with onboarding, orientation, and competency validation.
10.    Monitor compliance with ACHC, CMS, ODH, EMTALA, and hospital policies.
11.    Track and improve key indicators including but no limed to falls, medication safety, infection prevention.
12.    Identifies potential problem areas, develops a system for objectively monitoring performance, and creatively seeks solutions to foster quality improvement. 
13.    Monitor and improve core ED metrics and scorecard initiatives
14.    Round on patients and families to address concerns and improve satisfaction with real time follow up.
15.    Collaborate with other departments (lab, imaging, inpatient units) to expedite care.
16.    Optimize staffing and scheduling for assigned shifts; input into self‑scheduling, floating plans, and incentive strategies.  
17.    Steward supplies and equipment; initiate work orders and follow‑up to sustain readiness.
18.    Assist with scheduling, payroll input, and staffing plans.
19.    Contribute to policy development and process improvement initiatives.
20.    Establishes expectations and model behaviors that demonstrate service excellence to staff and focuses on the patient as the primary customer. 
21.    Demonstrates effective human resources management. Responsible for appropriate recruitment, selection and retention of staff, attempting to minimize turnover of productive employees. 
22.    Delegates effectively by establishing clear expectations; maintains accountability with appropriate follow-up mechanisms.
23.    Willingly floats between campuses. 

QUALIFICATIONS
1.    Completion of an accredited nursing program and current Ohio RN Licensure.
2.    BSN or equivalent experience required
3.    Three (3) years clinical experience in assigned or related field.
4.    Current CPR certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
5.    High degree of skill in interpersonal relations with the ability to deal effectively on a one to one and group basis with physicians, nursing staff, administration, and other hospital departments.
6.    Strong strategic and critical thinking skills with the ability to foster teamwork and process change
7.    Ability to read, write and explain or describe moderately complex information to other hospital staff.
8.    Ability to define problems, collect data, interpret findings, set priorities and carry out established plan.
9.    Attention to detail with ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
10.    Ability to communicate well in an oral and written manner, as well as the ability to observe, assess, guide, and evaluate others.
11.    Ability to read, calculate and prepare medication, as well as the ability to observe and analyze any resulting reactions.
12.    Self-motivated and able to complete assigned tasks with minimal direction.
13.    Demonstrates competence in age-specific patient care.
14.    Has or obtains PALS, TNCC, ACLS, BCRA, and ENPC certification within 12 months of hire date, provided the appropriate classes are available/offered within this period.
