The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) Clifton Center and their Cardiac Surgery Unit (East 9 City) are seeking a Clinical Nurse 1 (new to practice RN).

Summary:

  • The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice is a newly licensed new-to-practice RN or RN with less than 15 months of experience that demonstrates basic safe practice within the organizational professional practice model. 
  •  The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice seeks guidance to integrate concepts, knowledge, skills and attitudes to meet standards for competent professional nursing practice as specified in the Clinical Nurse I New to Practice/Apprentice position description addendum. 
  • The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice exhibits UPHS organizational behavioral competencies which reflect its mission and are embedded in the professional practice competency domains.
  • The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice is accountable for the provision of direct care to patients who may range in age from infancy to the elderly and demonstrates within the competency domains of Continuous Quality Improvement, Evidence Based Practice and Research, Leadership, Person and Family Centered Care, Professionalism, Safety, Teamwork, and Technology/ Informatics (Definitions listed below). 
  • The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice works closely with the interprofessional health care team to facilitate the coordination of care across the continuum. The nurse focuses on developing the knowledge and skills necessary to provide individualized care based on physical, psychosocial, cultural, educational, safety, and age appropriate considerations of assigned patients. 
  •  The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice requires consultation with more experienced clinicians and benefits from feedback while demonstrating growth in the ability to care for increasingly complex patients. The nurse demonstrates how nursing practice impacts the organizational vision, mission, and goals and the care delivery system. The nurse complies with all regulations and standards of regulatory and accrediting bodies. 
  •  The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice /Apprentice must complete all Clinical Nurse 1 competencies and is expected to advance to the Clinical Nurse 2 Colleague level by 18 months of professional practice. See addendum.

Credentials:

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
  • BLS/CPR, as a healthcare provider as per the American Heart Association
  • Registered Nurse - PA (Required)

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science (Required)

Performs selected therapeutic interventions and diagnostic procedures within scope of practice and hospital policy. • b. Safely administers medications and treatments as ordered according to hospital policy and formulary using the appropriate principles of safe medication administration, two (2) patient identifiers and accurate weight-based dosages • c. Safely handles various types of drugs and body fluids using knowledge of appropriate universal precautions. • d. Maintains safety precautions while providing patient care including infection control isolation techniques, patient/bed positioning, side rails, restraint utilization, skin care, patient/specimen transport, physical environment, awareness, fall prevention, seizure precautions, suicide screening, and work injury prevention. • e. Analyzes patient condition and responds to deteriorating clinical status by consulting physician or appropriate healthcare team members for admitted patients (inclusive of Rapid Response Team), and taking appropriate, prompt action. • f. Maintains equipment in good working order, reports equipment failure, and initiates corrective action when needed. • g. Protects and guarantees the confidentiality of all patient-related information, including the patient’s medical record. • i. Adheres to all hospital policies regarding National Patient Safety Goals; for example, consistently utilizes 2 patient identifiers before performing any diagnostic or therapeutic intervention. • 4. Actively participates in and supports departmental and organizational quality initiatives and goals inclusive of optimizing patient flow. • a. Demonstrates appropriate skill in utilization of the computer for automated order entry, data retrieval, medication administration, nursing care planning and intervention and interdepartmental communication as determined by defined access levels. • b. Keeps current in nursing practice through participation in continuing education programs. • c. Identifies professional goals, which reflect own strengths and weaknesses and seeks assistance for improvement of performance. • d. Demonstrates initiative and self-direction by providing care in an effective, efficient manner. • e. Attends and participates in meetings according to department standards. • f. Supports and participates in departmental and hospital evidence-based care quality initiatives including implementation of standard workflow for STEMI Alerts, Stroke Alerts, Sepsis identification and treatment, pressure ulcer prevention, and Infection Control initiatives. • g. Participates as a team member or in workgroups on departmental or hospital evidence-based quality initiatives. • h. Assist with orientation of nursing personnel. • 5. Maintains clinical competency according to unit specific standards • a. NIHSS certification required within 3 months of hire • b. Demonstrate competency in maintaining specific technological skills • c. Completes annual mandatory requirements as outlined in yearly departmental Staff Education Plan • d. Meets required certification/educational requirements • e. Achieving specialty certification is highly endorsed • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization Qualifications: BSN Required Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications: ACLS and BLS required Current licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of State Bureau of Occupational and Professional Affairs.
