About the Role The Med-Surg RN is responsible provide care for primarily adult patients before and after surgical procedures; they also attend to those who are being treated with pharmaceuticals to manage illness. Due to the broad range of medical conditions Med/Surge Nurses will encounter, they must be well-versed in a large variety of health conditions. POSITION’S ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Med/Surge Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of Med/Surge Nurses include (but are not limited to): Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans. Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse. Educates patients on surgical procedures. Records patients’ medical information and vital signs. Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients and interprets and records electronic displays. Initiates corrective action whenever the patient displays adverse symptomatology. Provides bedside care for a wide variety of medical patients, including pre- and post-surgery patients. Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their illness/injury, by explaining: post-treatment home care needs. Changes dressings, inserts catheters, starts IVs. Prepares equipment and aids physician during examination and treatment of patient. Responds to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards and protocol. Participates in discharge planning. Utilizes time management skills. Records all care information concisely, accurately, and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms. The Melanoma/Sarcoma unit is a 25-bed medical oncology unit providing care to adult and geriatric patients ranging in age from 18 - 95. Four monitored beds are designated for melanoma, renal cell carcinoma, sarcoma, cervical, ovarian, thoracic and pancreatic cancer patients receiving high-dose bolus interleukin-2 and/or targeted cellular therapy requiring cardiac monitoring. Primary populations treated include: melanoma, sarcoma and GI patients receiving complex chemotherapeutic and bio-immunotherapeutic regimens and all solid tumor cancer patients receiving immune effector cell therapy. Ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, an RN license and at least twelve months of recent RN experience in Oncology and/or a Medical Surgical Inpatient setting. Shift will be 7pm - 7am and 26 out of 52 weekend shifts per year. Summary The Department of Internal Medicine, Section of Hematology/Oncology is seeking a qualified candidate for an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) position in an inpatient hematology role at the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center at Baylor College of Medicine in the Texas Medical Center.
