Preferred Master's Degree in Nursing Where You'll Work The 1E Med-Surg/Observation Unit at St. Anthony Hospital, one of our proud Magnet® designated hospitals, is a 22-bed department with a volume of more than 300 patients a month (usually 300 to 310). This unit is a new concept unit with a combination of both observation (14 beds) status and inpatient status (8 beds) patients. Our observation beds take a variety of patients requiring further time to be observed from the ED. If a patient needs further testing or monitoring and is not appropriate to stay in the ED, then our department will take them. Our top two diagnoses are chest pain and abdominal pain. We also accept patients that are sent from surrounding free standing EDs with the same criteria. When a patient requires care longer than 24-48 hours, we will transfer to an inpatient status and move to one of our inpatient beds or another inpatient unit in our hospital. The department’s mission is to deliver safe quality care to every patient in a timely manner. Many join this team because they have an interest in emergency medicine.
