Essential Functions Coordinates and delivers high-quality, patient-centered care in accordance with organizational policies, protocols, and the nursing process. Utilizes knowledge of human growth and development to provide age-appropriate care and education. Administers prescribed medications, monitors for side effects, and documents administration in accordance with standards of practice. Assists physicians during procedures within the scope of documented competency and skill level. Collaborates with the healthcare team to develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans based on patient assessments and needs. Responds to medical emergencies and participates in life-saving interventions, such as CPR and code team activities, as appropriate. Advocates for the rights and needs of patients, ensuring their voices are heard and respected in care planning and delivery. Provides patient and family education on medical conditions, treatment plans, and post-discharge care, ensuring understanding and adherence to instructions. Implements and adheres to infection control protocols to prevent the spread of healthcare-associated infections. Monitors and operates medical equipment (e.g., IV pumps, monitors, ventilators) as needed for patient care and safety. Promotes patient safety by adhering to National Patient Safety Goals and maintaining a clean, safe environment for patients and staff. Participates in audits, chart reviews, and compliance checks to ensure adherence to standards of practice and regulatory requirements. Demonstrates responsible decision-making in planning, delegating, and providing care based on patient needs and organizational policies. Documents patient care and education thoroughly and promptly in the medical record. Engages in professional development to maintain clinical competency and understanding of current nursing standards and regulations. Participates in performance improvement initiatives, including data collection and process development, to enhance patient outcomes and care delivery. Critical Care RN: Administers medications and other treatments as prescribed, including intravenous medications and therapies. Manages complex medical equipment, including ventilators, monitoring devices, and other life-support systems. Performs procedures such as inserting central lines, managing tracheostomies, and providing advanced cardiac life support. Endoscopy RN: Assesses patient needs, reviews medical history, explains procedures, obtains consent, and prepares the patient for procedure. Monitors patient vitals, administers medications, and assists the physician during procedure. Provides post-procedure care, monitors recovery, and educates patients about aftercare instructions. Ensures the endoscopy room is properly prepared, instruments are sterilized, and equipment is functioning correctly. PACU RN: Assesses the patient's level of consciousness and responsiveness as they wake up from anesthesia. Evaluates pain levels and administers pain medications as prescribed. Observes any side effects of anesthesia, such as nausea, vomiting, shivering, or muscle aches. Monitors for and respond to any post-operative complications. Administers medications, including pain relievers and other post-operative medications, as prescribed. Regulates intravenous (IV) fluids and monitor fluid balance. Checks and changes dressings on surgical wounds. Ensures a clear airway and provide oxygen support as needed. Educates patients and families about post-surgery care, potential complications, and discharge instructions. Performs other duties as assigned. Maintains regular and reliable attendance. Complies with all policies and standards. Qualifications 0-2 years of experience in a clinical nursing role or student clinical rotations in an acute care setting required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Strong knowledge of the nursing process and clinical nursing practices. Ability to perform thorough patient assessments and communicate findings effectively. Proficient in administering medications and monitoring for side effects. Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in documenting patient care. The Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner will work with the collaborating physician in an active inpatient practice to deliver health care services to our patients. The Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner shall consult with the collaborating physician by telecommunication or in person as needed. In the absence of the designated collaborating physician, another physician shall be available for consultation. Location: Birmingham, AL (providing local hospital support) Schedule: Full-Time (Monday-Friday) + One Weekend/Month Specific Duties 1. Will work with the collaborating physician in an active inpatient and outpatient practice to deliver health care services to our patients. 2. Diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute and chronic health problems. 3. Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic treatment. 4. Monitors the effectiveness of interventions. 5. Ordering, interpreting and performing laboratory and radiology tests. 6. Prescribing medications, including controlled substances, to the extent delegated. 7. Performing other therapeutic or corrective measures as indicated. Take and record vital signs prior to administration of medications which could affect or change the vital signs. Document the medications given in the resident’s clinical record. Administer oxygen per nasal channel or a non-sealing face mask only in an emergency. Immediately after the emergency, the medication aide shall verbally notify the licensed nurse on duty or on call and appropriately document the activity and notification. Registered Nurses who have received specialized training and are able to function as an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenator (ECMO) Specialist provide daily staffing for Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) services. Specialists work under the direction of unit leadership, intensivist services, perfusion services, and in collaboration with bedside staff to ensure that the patient on ECMO has adequate perfusion, corrects for proper acid-base balance, and provides for hemodynamic stability within ordered parameters. Nursing ECMO Specialists work in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and communicate with physicians, perfusionists and other members of the healthcare team to interpret, adjust and complete treatment specific care for the ECMO patient. ECMO specialists are expected to perform required technical skills with efficiency, accuracy and safety while anticipating, troubleshooting, and managing crises and emergency situations according to policy and procedure. Performs scheduled, un-scheduled, and emergency ECLS in the hospital setting. Operates all ECMO equipment under the direction of MD/perfusion providers. Monitors and optimizes the ECMO circuit and related equipment during the management period. Accurately administers blood products and medications through the ECMO circuit when ordered. Manages any equipment when connected in-line with ECMO circuit. Management of ECLS during transport. Ensures continuous ECLS coverage. Attends Mandatory Quarterly Simulations. The professional nurse contributes to the knowledge and skills of others, and the continuous improvement of the quality of health care practice and organizational outcomes. Participates and may lead unit level and/or organizational level committees of nursing practice and performance improvement. Participates in department and organizational peer review, mentoring, and coaching regarding professional practice or role performance. Practices efficient use of supplies and maintains a clean, safe, and organized work area. Attends staff development in-services, department meetings, and/or nursing committee meetings. Partners with the nursing leadership team to identify professional development needs. Assumes responsibility for one’s own professional development and continuing education. Meets all mandatory, developmental, and performance competency requirements for Baptist Health and unit/department. 1 year experience required unless approved by AVP level or above. Maintains current State of Alabama RN license or valid eNLC multistate RN license Maintains current BLS/Healthcare Provider certification. ACLS, NRP, PALS, TNCC are required for certain areas. NRP required for Neonatal Intensive care Unit (NICU). Previous PACU, ICU, or ER exp strongly preferred.
