Job Summary The Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) is classified as an auxiliary worker in accordance with the Nursing Practice Act and Standards Rules and Regulations for the Practice of Nursing. These are non-licensed workers who may perform basic nursing services for patients as delegated by and under the direct supervision of the professional nurse. The activities contributing to the delivery of nursing care is limited to providing personal hygiene, comfort, safety, and protection. Non-nursing support functions are also included in role expectations. Essential Functions The CNA must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served in his/her department. The individual must acquire and/or demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. He/she must be able to provide care with consideration of developmental status. Job Summary As supervised and delegated by a Registered Nurse, provides direct patient care in the clinical setting. Essential Functions Interacts professionally with patients/families; treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families. Effectively and appropriately communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers, demonstrating customer service excellence through application of positive language principles, appropriate response and use of constructive problem-solving techniques which foster positive outcomes. Provides direct patient care, consults with nursing staff/providers as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care. Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management. Demonstrates knowledge of lab requirements, requisitions. Collects a baseline summary of a patient’s medical to include, check and record a patient's body temperature, pulse, respiration weight and blood pressure. Maintains accurate and continued documentation appropriately for all assessments, treatments, and evaluations performed. Documentation meets current standards and policies. Decisions made reflect knowledge of facts, knowledge of diseases/surgical conditions, care required and good judgment. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over patient life span and the skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to the patient population served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group. Apply principles of sterile techniques and infection control procedures. Follows the six (6) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors. Maintains current knowledge of medications and IV fluids and their correct administration based on age of the patient and his/her clinical condition. Assists with establishment of plan of care which is appropriate to problems identified and involves the patient according to his or her capabilities and desires. Identifies and documents goals, anticipated progress and plans for reevaluation. Assists other nursing staff with the delivery of nursing care. Consults other providers as appropriate to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities. Coordinate patient services with referring physician / facility. Performs other reasonably related job duties as assigned or requested, within scope of practice. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations Requirements will include successful completion of orientation checklist and skills/credentials/competency requirements of specific area of work. Able to maintain a high awareness of patient satisfaction and teamwork. Attention to detail. Ability to respond to and cope with emergency situations professionally and calmly. Adaptable to performing well under pressure in a stressful environment and taking appropriate action. Must be flexible, able to work as needed for appropriate departmental coverage. Basic computer knowledge; become proficient in Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems. Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Demonstrates proficient time management skills. Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security. Additional languages preferred. Qualifications Education Graduate of an accredited program for licensed vocational/practical nurses. Licenses/Certifications Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse License. BLS Certification required. Intravenous Therapy and Blood Certifications preferred. ACLS may be required in certain care areas Experience Some experience preferred.
