Advanced Practice Provider - Research

Overview Virginia Oncology Associates, the largest group of medical professionals in Hampton Roads and Northeast North Carolina devoted exclusively to cancer care and blood disorders, has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Research Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to support our office located in Norfolk. Position Overview The Clinical Trials Advanced Practice Provider (APP) - Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Associate/Assistant (PA)- is an integrated member of the Clinical Research Care team within our outpatient oncology practice/research site. This role supports the clinical execution of oncology clinical trials, helping advance innovative cancer research and expand patient access to clinical trial opportunities across a diverse network of care settings. It is the expectation that the APP operate work collaboratively with investigators, research staff, and multidisciplinary care teams to support patient screening, informed consent, enrollment, treatment, safety monitoring, and ongoing clinical trial care, while ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and Good Clinical Practice. Responsibilities Provide comprehensive, protocol‑driven clinical care to patients participating in oncology clinical trials. Perform prescreening assessments using protocol‑defined criteria, EMR review, and available clinical data to identify and prioritize potential clinical trial candidates in collaboration with investigators and research staff. Conduct patient screening and collaborate with investigators to confirm eligibility based on protocol inclusion/exclusion criteria. Obtain informed consent, ensuring patient comprehension and voluntary participation in accordance with regulatory and IRB/IEC requirements. Perform clinical assessments, manage acute and chronic conditions, and prescribe medications (including investigational agents, as permitted). Monitor and manage adverse events, ensuring appropriate documentation and timely reporting. Educate patients and families regarding clinical trial participation, procedures, risks, benefits, and follow‑up care. Document clinical findings and trial‑related activities in the EMR and applicable research systems. Participate in study initiation visits, monitoring visits, audits, and inspections. Serve as a clinical liaison between investigators, research coordinators, sponsors, and clinical departments. Support multiple concurrent clinical trials while maintaining protocol compliance and patient safety. Qualifications Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited program for nursing education and successful completion of a Nurse Practitioner program or successful completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program RN State License and current registration with the State Board of Nursing in practicing state, along with current state certification of Nurse Practitioner or current state license as a Physician Assistant Current BLS and CPR/ACLS certification preferred DEA and NPI registration (as applicable) Two years post Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant experience in oncology clinical trials preferred Familiarity with IRB/IEC processes and GCP Ability to work independently in a fast‑paced research environment Proficiency with EMR systems and standard office software Must be willing to travel to the various practice locations PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Summary GENERAL SUMMARY Reports to designated division Director and is responsible for managing designated nursing personnel, coordinating and directing the workflow and functions of the department assigned to facilitate safe and efficient workflow and clinical practices. Has overall responsibility for designated service operations with 24-hour accountability. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Supervises assigned staff including development of schedules and ensuring that quality patient care is delivered. Resolves patient needs by using multidisciplinary team strategies. Participates in hiring process to include interviewing and selecting applicants, and orienting new staff, conducting performance evaluations and recommending corrective action when needed. Ensures that nursing policies and procedures are implemented. Communicates and interprets policies and procedures to nursing staff. Collaborates with physicians in the proper treatment of patients. Contributes ideas and suggestions to improve methods and productivity within the assigned unit(s) while maintaining high quality patient care. Mentors and coaches nursing staff to ensure continued professional development. Provides emotional and psychological support to patients and their families. Ensures operation of medical and administrative equipment by verifying emergency equipment availability, preventive maintenance and other measures. Ensures nursing supplies are maintained by reviewing usage reports, identifying trends and anticipating needs; submits supply orders as necessary. Seeks guidance from the Director and/or upper management for unusual or unanticipated circumstances that require deviation from financial/operational policies and standards of practice. Maintains documentation of patient care services by auditing patient and department records. Protects patients by carrying out infection-control policies and protocols, enforcing medication administration and storage procedures and controlled substance regulations. Participates in budget development process as directed. Participates in the department’s rotating management-on-call schedule, serving as the designated off-shift leadership representative to support operational oversight and escalation management. Leads, manages, coaches, and trains a team or department, provides guidance, support, and mentors to ensure optimal performance and productivity. Oversees the recruitment, hiring, team/department orientation, performance appraisals and disciplinary actions including up to termination processes for a team or department. Performs other duties as directed. LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS Current Virginia state license as a Registered Nurse or Registered Nurse holding a valid Compact State license. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s degree in nursing required. Master’s degree in Nursing or related field preferred. Healthcare/management experience required. Pediatric experience preferred. Possesses excellent leadership, communication, and analytical skills with the ability to plan, establish and maintain a professional work environment. Ability to identify problems and implement solutions for operational and organizational functions. Interpersonal skills necessary to direct subordinates and delegate tasks. Professional knowledge of nursing theory and practice. Technical and professional knowledge unique to the business and/or clinical operations of the designated services (Nursing, Financial, Human Resource, Information Systems, Risk, Governance, Regulations, Planning and Marketing). CPR Training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire. WORKING CONDITIONS Expected to work in a patient care environment with minimal exposure to environmental hazards such as, but not limited to, excessive noise, dust, or extremes in temperatures. Exposure to communicable diseases and moderately adverse working conditions due to the need to perform certain patient care activities can be expected.
