Responsibilities Reports To: Office Manager Position Objective: The Medical Assistant is responsible for providing both clinical and administrative support to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care. Working under the direction of a Physician, Physician Assistant, or APRN, the Medical Assistant prepares patients for examinations, performs clinical procedures within the scope of practice, assists providers during patient visits, and supports front office operations. Essential Responsibilities: Patient Care: Welcome patients and prepare them for provider examinations by obtaining and documenting patient history, chief complaint, current medications, allergies, medical history, surgical history, family history, social history, preventive care information, and other relevant clinical information in the electronic medical record (EMR). Measure, document, and report vital signs and other clinical observations. Prepare patients and examination rooms for provider visits. Assist providers during examinations, treatments, and in-office procedures. Explain provider instructions, treatment plans, medications, and follow-up care to patients as directed. Provide compassionate, professional service that promotes a positive patient experience. Clinical Procedures: Administer oral and injectable medications, immunizations, and treatments as directed by the provider and permitted by state regulations. Assist with wound care, dressing changes, bandaging, irrigation of eyes and ears, and other clinical procedures. Initiate and monitor IV infusions when appropriately trained and permitted by state regulations. Perform phlebotomy and prepare specimens for laboratory testing. Perform CLIA-waived laboratory testing in accordance with established procedures. Conduct in-office diagnostic testing, including but not limited to: Electrocardiograms (EKGs) Vision screenings Pulse oximetry Peak flow testing Oxygen administration as ordered Inhalation treatments Spirometry Perform PT/INR testing using approved equipment (CoaguChek/Coag-Sense) and glucose testing using a glucometer. Complete laboratory quality controls and maintain required testing logs. Clean, disinfect, and sterilize reusable instruments and properly dispose of contaminated materials in accordance with infection prevention standards. Clinical Documentation & Care Coordination: Accurately document patient encounters, treatments, diagnostic results, procedures, supplies utilized, and telephone encounters within the EMR. Complete outbound and inbound patient communications, including: Appointment reminders Medication reminders Transitional Care Management (TCM) — Medicare-supported outreach within 2 days of hospital or facility discharge to reduce readmissions and support safe care transitions Preventive care outreach Support Annual Wellness Visits (AWVs) by preparing Health Risk Assessments (HRAs), updating preventive care records, and ensuring completion of required documentation. Assist in patient outreach, scheduling of preventive screenings, and documentation of completed services. Care coordination activities Maintain patient medical records in accordance with organizational policies and HIPAA requirements. Administrative & Operational Support: Professionally manage front office responsibilities, including: Answering incoming telephone calls Greeting patients Scheduling appointments Patient registration and check-in/check-out Processing referrals Prescription refill coordination Routing clinical and administrative inquiries Monitor inventory levels of medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, and disposable clinical items, and assist with ordering as needed. Assist with maintaining office and clinical supply inventories. Support onboarding and training of new team members as assigned. Collaborate with providers, clinical staff, and front office personnel to ensure efficient clinic operations. Perform other duties as assigned. Position Requirements/ Skills: High school diploma or equivalent required. Bilingual Spanish required. Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred (CMA, RMA, NCMA, CCMA, or equivalent certification). 1+ year(s) of experience as a Medical Assistant in a physician practice, outpatient, or ambulatory care setting preferred. Responsibilities Essential Functions Demonstrates critical knowledge, skills, and judgement to care for patients requiring complex assessment and therapies, high intensity interventions, and high-level continuous nursing vigilance. Utilizes information and assessment data to anticipate and respond with confidence and adapt to rapidly changing patient conditions. Identifies and prioritizes information to take immediate and decisive evidence-based, patient focused action. Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients, and interprets and records electronic displays, such as intracranial pressures, central venous pressures, pulmonary artery pressures, and cardiac rhythms from cardiac monitors, respirators, ventilators, oxygen pumps, etc. Responds to life-saving situations based on nursing standards and protocol. Observes, monitors, and assesses patients’ condition, recognizes, identifies, and interprets serious situations and calls Physician or takes preplanned emergency measures when Physician is not immediately available. Assesses patient’s needs and develops/revises an individualized plan of care based on patient needs and responses. Evaluates the patient’s progress toward attaining expected outcomes. Respects diversity by building respectful relationships with all team members and customers. Functions as a patient and family advocate. Qualifications Education/Training • Graduate of an approved school of nursing. • Meets all mandatory, developmental, and performance competency requirements for Orlando Health and unit/department. Licensure/Certification • Maintains current State of Florida RN license or valid eNLC multistate RN license • Maintains current BLS/Healthcare Provider certification. • ACLS, NRP, PALS, TNCC are required for certain areas. NRP required for Neonatal Intensive care Unit (NICU). Experience At least two (2) years of experience as a Registered Nurse in a critical care setting. NICU experience prefer.
