Related Classes Teaching & Research Center Licensed Practical Nurses are licensed practical nurses that provide direct nursing care to individuals receiving treatment in State University of New York teaching and research center hospitals under the direction of a registered nurse, physician, or other licensed health care provider. Illustrative Duties Graduate Nurse (T&RC) Prepares or assists with preparation of nursing care plans consistent with individuals’ comprehensive treatment plans and medical needs. Carries out treatment procedures, administers medications, and monitors individuals’ conditions. Records notes and maintains individuals’ medical records and nursing care plans, including nursing care, medications, and treatments, reactions to care and treatment, intake and output of liquids and solids, and vital signs. Participates in the development, implementation, and revision of individual care plans as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team. Modifies nursing care plans based on individual condition and responses to care and treatment. Triages individuals by inquiring about illnesses, injuries, and symptoms, and records findings and observations. Provides education and counseling to individuals and families regarding health, medications, procedures, and treatment goals. Registered Nurse 1 (T&RC) Independently performs the duties described above and provides clinical supervision and instruction to Graduate Nurses (T&RC), Teaching & Research Center Licensed Practical Nurses, and direct care staff in completing care tasks. Delegates responsibility for appropriate nursing activities, skills, and/or procedures to nursing and direct care staff; and makes clinical rounds to assess individuals’ nursing care needs and observe and evaluate the provision of nursing services. May perform the full range of supervisory duties over Graduate Nurses (T&RC), Teaching & Research Center Licensed Practical Nurses, and direct care staff; provide information to Registered Nurse Supervisors 1 (T&RC); and prepare or contribute to the preparation of reports and performance evaluations for lower-level staff involved in nursing care activities. Registered Nurse 2 (T&RC) Positions perform duties in each of the three functional areas described below. Description The Medical Assistant I provides clinical office support to physicians and surgeons and performs patient care and administrative duties necessary to deliver quality patient care. Responsibilities A. Clinical/Technical/Service 1. Participates in the application of the nursing process to an assigned group of patients. 2. Demonstrates those behaviors which reflect the scientific knowledge, judgment, and technical skills of a Licensed Practical Nurse 3. Performs job duties under supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse. 4. Demonstrates a competent level of approved skilled nursing care tasks and procedures using approved technical skills related to vital signs, pulse oximetry, venipuncture, starting standard peripheral IVs only (not midlines or long peripheral lines), urinary catheter insertion/catheter care; and simple dressings, remove/discontinue a peripheral line. 5. Administer IV fluids, provided completion of annual competency IV therapy training. 6. Monitors patients receiving blood and blood products and TPN under the direction of the RN, who administers the transfusion. 7. Makes recommendations in the application of the nursing process. 8. Participates in planning, and administers direct patient care, including activities of daily living (ADL). 9. Performs point of care testing including blood glucose. 10. The training should include a written examination and competency demonstration. A Hemodialysis LPN may: • Administer bolus of medications by IV push in a chronic outpatient hemodialysis treatment center, excluding first dose administration which is administered by an RN. The RN will access and care for patient’s initial catheter use. Subsequently, and following the MSHS CVAD care policy, the LPN can: • Identify and set up supplies necessary for accessing a CVAD. • Initiate treatment with a CVAD. • Draw blood specimens from a CVAD. • Perform CVAD dressing change and exit site care. • Monitor and adjust flow rates of central venous catheter access device/line. • Intervene if there is a catheter/blood line disconnection or other complications associated with a CVAD. • Provide CVAD care at the end of dialysis treatment. The Patient Care Associate supports the registered nurse in patient care activities, such as: assisting patient with activities of daily living, collecting specimens and performing procedures; maintaining a safe, clean environment; and other duties as needed. Description The Offsite Licensed Practical Nurse I work as a part of the healthcare team by assisting in planning and implementing care interventions while promoting high quality patient care in a professional, efficient and safe manner, ensuring the patient flow. The Offsite LPN provides personal assistance, medical attention, emotional support, or other personal care to patients. This individual is expected to maintain up-to-date knowledge in this area and apply it to everyday practice. Responsibilities 1. Prepares and escorts the patient for exams and procedures. 2. Explains treatment procedures, medications, diets and physicians instructions to patients. 3. Administers medications, including all types of injections, IV therapy as needed and within the scope of licensure. 4. Provides basic patient care and treatments, including but not limited to: dressing wounds, performing catheterizations or applying compresses. 5. Collects, labels and processes specimens accurately. 6. Cleans and prepares medical treatment rooms for patient visits 7. Assembles and uses equipment appropriate to specific medical practice. 8. Schedules follow-up appointments for patients as needed. 9. Communicates delays effectively when necessary. 10. Enters patient information into the electronic medical record accurately and in a timely manner. 11. Manages the physician's work environment appropriately. 12. Provides clerical support to patients including, but not limited to, making appointments, booking procedures, obtaining pre-authorizations and answering telephones. 13. Manages medical inventory and supply ordering based on par levels. 14. Must work under the supervision of the physician or Registered Nurse. 15. Performs other related duties Qualifications High School Diploma/GED.
