The Observation Unit is a fast-paced 52-bed unit for both medical and surgical patients needing short-term care. Patients here have an anticipated discharge of about 24-48 hours; enough time to receive treatments and procedures before being discharged. Top diagnoses on the unit include chest pain, Afib, hypertension, PE/DVT, abdominal pain, trauma, TI/CVA, CHF, asthma/COPD, vertigo, AFR/electrolyte abnormalities, syncope, hypoglycemia/hyperglycemia, and pre/post procedure (cardiac cath, OR, pacer, ablation, etc.). This unit requires strong assessment and critical thinking skills, as patient's condition can change rapidly. The team sees everything from sore throats, ear infections, lacerations and broken bones to more serious conditions like stroke, heart attack, cardiac arrest, and traumatic injuries from motor vehicle and farming accidents, gunshot wounds and stabbings. Lancaster General Hospital, a Level I-accredited Trauma Center, recently completed a major expansion and remodel of the ED that nearly doubled the size of the department, from 63 beds to 95 beds. This includes 10 beds in our updated and expanded behavioral health unit, and 13 dedicated pediatric beds. Responsibilities Lancaster Behavioral Health Hospital (LBHH) is a 126-bed, inpatient psychiatric hospital and start-up joint venture between Lancaster General Health/Penn Medicine and Universal Health Services. In addition to a general adult unit and dedicated adolescent unit, the facility offers services for treating those with co-occurring disorders on the psychiatric-medical unit, an intensive adult unit to care for those with severe conditions, as well as a women’s trauma unit. Medical Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners (CRNPs) at Lancaster Behavioral Health Hospital deliver quality nursing care to patients with varying psychiatric, behavioral and mental health diagnoses, ensuring their safety and continued care. Medical CRNPs are responsible for completing the following duties and tasks: Maintain a minimum caseload of 12 patients. Obtains comprehensive health history; perform physical examination on new admissions and document/dictate in patient record if applicable. Perform and/or participate in rounds of hospitalized patients, including physical assessments, interpretation of diagnostic studies, interaction with nursing staff and documentation in medical record.
