Duties & Responsibilities Purpose of Position : Under supervision, provides professional nursing care to patients/clients within an assigned unit. Diagnoses and treats responses to actual or potential health problems by means of nursing methods and techniques such as case-finding, health teaching, health counseling and provision of care supportive to and restorative of life and well-being. Examples Of Typical Tasks Identifies and discriminates between physical and psycho-social signs and symptoms. Selects and performs those therapeutic measures which are essential for effective execution of the nursing regimen for assigned patients/clients. Develops, implements and continuously evaluates the nursing regimen for assigned patients/clients. Records and maintains nursing care plans and progress notes on patients/clients to ensure continuity of care. Interprets and reports responses of patients/clients to appropriate members of the health team. Participates with interdisciplinary health team members to plan a comprehensive patient care program. Determines and assigns those components of the nursing regimen which may be carried out by allied nursing personnel. Provides teaching, guidance and direction to allied nursing personnel in rendering patient care. Participates in defining, implementing, maintaining and interpreting standards of nursing practice. Participates in departmental and interdisciplinary conferences pertaining to policies and procedures affecting nursing practice. Participates in determining conditions, resources and policies essential to the delivery of nursing care services. Participates in development and maintenance of a system of evaluation of nursing care, practices and procedures, including evaluation of nursing personnel. Interprets philosophy and objectives of agency and Nursing Department to patients/clients, families and other groups. Maintains professional competence through participation in continuing education and other appropriate learning experiences. Performs other professional nursing activities as delegated by nursing service administration. Minimum Qualifications A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA). Special Note For assignments in Post-Acute Care ONLY, individuals meeting the following criteria may also be considered for appointment: Graduation from a nursing education program registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as licensure qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse (RN) and has applied for licensure as an RN. These unlicensed individuals may be employed to practice under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN for up to 90 days immediately following graduation pending receipt of a limited permit, which selected candidates must apply for and receive within the same 90-day period. Once a limited permit is received, individuals can practice nursing, under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN at a NYC Health + Hospitals health care setting for up to one (1) year from the date of issuance of the limited permit. In addition, must hold or obtain through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA). Description The Assistant Nurse Manager is a Registered Professional Nurse with broad knowledge and skills who acts as clinical leader in the daily functioning of the unit and oversight of quality patient care delivery, in conjunction with, or in the absence of, the Clinical Nurse Manager. Responsibilities Patient Care Leading nursing practice using the tenets of the Professional Practice Model of Relationship Centered Care and the Care Delivery Model of Modified Primary Nursing for the promotion of the patient experience. Demonstrates proficiency in all aspects of Purposeful Hourly Rounding (PHR) and role models expected behaviors. Ensures the integration of PHR into clinical activities to enhance Relationship Centered Care. Validates staff members round hourly on all patients by direct observation and patient feedback. Assesses staff competency in PHR and provides consistent meaningful feedback with more focused feedback as needed. Conducts rounding of all patients on a daily basis (Monday-Friday.) Communicates quantitative and qualitative information regarding the patient experience and staff engagement to the staff and the Interdisciplinary Patient Care Team that leads to the development and implementation of an action plan. Collaborates with the physician dyad and escalates concerns as appropriate. Follows up on all patient concerns in a timely manner and provides service recovery as needed. Leads staff participation in quality and safety initiatives and mandated compliance measures. Demonstrates accountability for all unit quality and safety practices and compliance, and ensures required evaluation of staff competencies is maintained. Operations and administration Supports implementation of the mission, vision, goals and objectives of the department, throughout the clinical service and individual patient care units. Provides administrative and clinical oversight to ensure that all activity (staffing, support services, inter disciplinary collaboration, resources and financial viability) supports the goals of the organization. Works collaboratively with physician dyads and the healthcare team to promote patient care and regulatory standards. Maintains a nursing unit in compliance with all regulatory agency mandates, including the regulations of NYS DOH and The Joint Commission. Oversees 24 hour patient care delivery, throughput, staffing and processes to ensure efficient and effective operations. Prepares, implements and monitors unit budgets, including capital equipment allocation, budget variances, management of OT and vacancies according to MSHS financial goals. Maintains control of established positions and manages the recruitment and retention of qualified staff. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information. Evaluates nursing staff performance and mentors, coaches, counsels and disciplines staff as needed. Monitors availability and maintenance of nursing equipment and supplies. Conducts regular staff meetings to ensure communication with staff about progress, changes and compliance with all hospital policies and procedures. Encourages, recognizes and rewards staff participation in quality and safety initiatives, compliance and successes. Facilitates organizational change initiatives by using effective strategies. Leads a shared decision-making model by establishing a structure of shared governance, just culture and staff engagement in practice councils, departmental meetings and initiatives. Interprets and implements collective bargaining agreements affecting staff. Responds to protest of assignment in a timely manner as detailed in the collective bargaining agreement and discusses the resolution in unit staff meetings. Qualifications Bachelor of Science with a major in nursing required, master's in nursing or health related field preferred. 3 years minimum Emergency Department (ER) clinical nursing experience with some Charge Nurse/Supervisory experience preferred. Must have relevant clinical competence in area of nursing practice assigned. Licensed as a registered nurse with current registration in New York State. ACLS, BCLS, PALS from AHA required. Description Job Title - Nurse Practitioner - Pediatric Intensive Care Unit - Mount Sinai Hospital - Full Time - Day A nurse practitioner (NP) as described in Title VIII, Article 139 section 6910 of the New York Education Law is a RN who has earned a separate certification as an NP through advanced clinical nursing education in a distinct specialty area of practice. Nurse practitioners are independent practitioners who diagnose, treat, and prescribe for a patients condition that falls within their specialty area of practice. NOTE: Medical orders, progress notes and treatments plans are not required to be countersigned by a physician. PRINCIPLES DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES CLINICAL PRACTICE Assesses the health status of patients/families by means of comprehensive health history and physical examination. Initiates and orders selected therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, consultations and laboratory examination, prescribes medication regimens, interprets findings and alters plan of care according to accepted standards of care and practice guidelines Educates and counsels in the areas of health promotion, maintenance, disease prevention, and management of acute/chronic illnesses. Documents findings and plan of care in the patient's medical record. Consults with physician according to established standards, policies, procedures, and protocols. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area. This position offers an opportunity to work with critically ill patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgeries and to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of intensivists, cardiologists, surgeons, nurses, and respiratory therapists. The ideal candidate will have experience in critical care and a passion for providing high-quality, patient-centered care in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Key Responsibilities: • Patient Assessment & Management: o Perform thorough assessments of critically ill cardiothoracic patients, including history, physical exams, and ongoing evaluations. o Order and interpret diagnostic tests, imaging, and lab results. o Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans for patients in collaboration with the attending physicians and healthcare team. o Provide continuous monitoring and management of complex cases, including post-operative recovery, ventilation support, and hemodynamic management. • Procedural Support: o When complex privileging is obtained the ability to peform central line placement, arterial line insertion, intubation/extubation, chest tube placement . o Provide post-procedure care and patient education, ensuring proper recovery and addressing potential complications. • Collaboration & Communication: o Work closely with attending cardiothoracic surgeons, intensivists, and nursing staff to ensure optimal patient care. o Communicate effectively with patients and families, providing education and support regarding treatment plans, recovery, and discharge processes. o Attend daily rounds to discuss patient progress, concerns, and updates. • Clinical Leadership & Education: o Serve as a mentor and resource for nursing staff, residents, and fellows, providing guidance and education on clinical practices within the CTICU. o Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to clinical research efforts within the unit. o Stay current with advancements in critical care medicine, particularly cardiothoracic care, and engage in continuing education.
