JOB SUMMARY Responsible for the provision of high quality, cost effective patient care in the Emergency Department. Coordinates the provision of age specific patient care that is consistent with the policies, procedures and standards of professional nursing practice and consistent with the policies and procedures in place at NTMC. Consults with staff, ED physicians, and the CNO on nursing problems and interpretation of hospital policies to ensure that patient needs are met. Participates in performance improvement activities within the department. SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Responsible for the cost-effective management of human resources in the department. Obtains a medical history by asking patients questions about their medical conditions, medications and allergies. Records any findings into the patient charts and alerts the physician and/or clinician of the results. • Performs blood draws (venipuncture) and intramuscular (IM) injections. • May train less experienced Heath Center team members in job functions/duties/protocols. • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations. • Verifies and completes requests for medical records per policy. • Maintains equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, performing preventive maintenance, and initiating repair requests. • Reviews consent form with patient and obtains informed consent for services, and procedures. Obtains informed consent from patients prior to the delivery of services per organization protocols. • Supports the clinician by performing lab testing and vital signs appropriate to the patient and notifying the clinician of special concerns pertinent to the visit. • Reviews test results with patients and when appropriate, educates patients with abnormal results regarding the nature of the problem, method and treatments prescribed, and instructions and information about proper follow-up, including referral to appropriate medical, financial, and social service resources when necessary. • Consistently utilizes an empathic approach to patient care delivery. • Provides compassionate care to patients using a holistic approach ensuring that patients’ physical, mental, social and emotional needs are addressed. • Provides contraceptive supplies, prescribed medications, and intramuscular injections as ordered by the clinician per health center protocols. Measures and documents vitals and communicates the resulting data to the consumer and provider, including temperature, pulse, oxygen saturation, respiration, blood pressure, height, weight, and pain level. Documents chief complaint, allergies, health history, and current medications accurately in EPIC for review by provider. Performs and documents laboratory testing and collections per provider orders and/or standard operating procedures, to include venipuncture with prior venipuncture competency check-off. Administers and documents oral and intramuscular medication using the appropriate medication verification workflow. If a medical assistant, then may perform injections with the appropriate competency checkoff Assists provider with procedures to include, but not limited to maintaining sterile field, laceration repair, I&D, and application of ortho-goods and assists with ortho-glass application.
