Job Description Our 3 East unit is seeking a casual Nursing Assistant to join our team in Wilmington, DE! The nursing assistant role is responsible for assisting with general activities of the patient care unit and assist the health care team with performance of patient care activities, under the direction and guidance of a Registered Nurse. Position is full-time, 36 hrs/wk, rotating day and night shifts with weekend and holiday requirement. 3 East is a surgical intermediate unit with a high population of patients requiring post-operative care for urological issues, traumatic injuries, and general surgery. 3 East also cares for patients with acute and end stage renal disease and patients requiring an intermediate level of nursing care due to their tracheostomy and/or ventilator needs. Each patient room is equipped with oxygen, compressed air, and suction along with state-of-the-art cardiorespiratory bedside monitors and computers that enable the healthcare team to access a patient’s electronic medical record. The patient care complexity directly relates to the wide range of patient care skills required for this diverse patient population. The goal of this unit is to provide high-quality, cost-effective patient care. The Synergy model is used in making appropriate patient assignments based on patient and family needs and nursing skill set. Special equipment used on this unit includes infusion pumps, syringe pumps, feeding pumps, BiPap respirators, Oxygen delivery methods, PCA & epidural pumps, wound vacutainers, ventilators and specialty beds. Nursing competencies include: chest tube management, pain management, blood product administration, urinary catheterization, tracheostomy care, ventilator management, and central line care and management. Essential Functions Ensures an adequate stock of all necessary equipment and supplies in designated areas at established par levels. Ensures a clean and safe patient care unit. Assists patients with activities of daily life (bath, feed, play, etc.) and provides other patient care as directed. Assures all supplies are accurately charged. Contacts pharmacy, dietary, and other departments as designated by the Registered Nurse. Collects patient specimens (blood, urine, stool, other per policy), paying close attention to patient safety, comfort and accuracy of information. Uses Hospital Information Systems as required for patient care, (e.g. documenting vital signs and patient care activities.) Accurately relays information from physicians, nurses, laboratory personnel and others. Transports patients and delivers reports, supplies, etc., to other patient units or Institute locations as needed. Courteously and professionally covers patient care unit front desk as needed. This includes promptly answering telephones, greeting patients, sending reports, distributing, sorting, or processing mail, entering orders, managing medical record, etc. Responsible for participation in departmental and hospital programs for Quality Assessment and Improvement, identifying opportunities to improve services, making recommendations and implementing actions as appropriate and consistent with the goals of the Nemours Foundation Participates in unit, departmental and hospital education programs. Attends unit/departmental meetings regularly. Demonstrates proficiency in the care of patients of all ages; neonates, infants, toddlers, school aged, adolescents and adults. Job Requirements High School Diploma required American Heart Association BLS required upon hire Minimum 1 year patient care experience preferred. Able to read and write accurately. Able to understand laboratory orders, computer information, and some medical terminology. Able to obtain specimens, including blood specimens, from a patient population that is primarily pediatric and often ill, handicapped, or restricted in some way. Job Requirements POSITION SUMMARY: To be fully engaged in providing Quality/No Harm, Customer Service and Stewardship by planning, directing and assessing all unit functions to include evaluation of patient care on a 24 hour basis on an assigned unit. Additional functions include participation in the development of policies and procedures for the Department of Patient Care Services, implementation of Health First policies and objectives, interview and selection of personnel, budget preparation, and cost effective operations, scheduling and assignment of personnel, employee performance appraisals, quality improvement activities, counseling and disciplinary actions as needed, at all times serving as clinical and professional role model to staff and contributing to their professional growth and development. PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES: Quality/No Harm: Ensures patient and staff safety on the assigned unit. Promotes associate accountability and competency through leadership and management practice. Provides input for annual performance appraisals and competency checklists for personnel on assigned shift on an annual basis and as necessary in a timely manner. Interviews and participates in the selection of new personnel for the unit. Assists with and participates in the development of policies, procedures, and standards of care for the unit. Implements and ensures compliance with policies and procedures. Ensures adequate training and appropriate use of the electronic medical record in compliance with established policies, procedures, and expectations. Counsels and disciplines associates as necessary. Encourages associate growth and development through mentorship and goal setting. Encourages associate participation in the clinical ladder. Responsible for scheduling and assigning personnel on assigned shift to ensure safe, adequate, and appropriate staffing for the unit. Schedules are completed in a timely manner and in compliance with the approved unit staffing plan based on patient needs and acuity. Assists with implementation of unit based performance improvement activities resulting in improved operations and patient care outcomes: Completes assigned audits and monitors accurately and in a timely manner. Identifies opportunities for quality improvement activities on the unit o Reports CQI results to departmental director and shares with shift associates. Ensures compliance with the Joint Commission and other organizational and regulatory agency standards with quality indicators and core measures. Performs those clinical skills within the scope of practice of a registered nurse in the state of Florida for which competencies have been validated. Stewardship: Assists in the development of the annual budget for the unit to include personnel, operational and capital needs. Monitors and ensures compliance staffing guidelines. Communicates unit, staff, and equipment needs and concerns to Manager/Director as appropriate. Customer Experience: Associate supports engagement through adherence to the I-CARE commitments and Health First Philosophy. Consistently displays and holds associates accountable for the elements of good service. Facilitates communication and problem solving with team members, physicians, and administrative personnel. Demonstrates ability to provide patient care utilizing nursing process as evidenced by documentation of process and discharge planning. Ensures current knowledge and competency in appropriate clinical skills. Documents attendance at clinical and management continuing education programs to ensure that knowledge base is current and to promote professional growth and development. Acquires certification in clinical specialty. Contributes to the patient experience as evidenced by positive patient satisfaction scores and HCAHP scores for department. Ensures consistent performance of purposeful hourly rounding and bedside shift report. Work Experience QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Education: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing. BSN required, OR Conditional and time limited waiver for BSN requirement may apply to internal associates who complete their BSN within 3 years of transition to new role (grand-father provision), OR external candidates may apply who are currently enrolled in a BSN program to complete within 3 years of hire. Sentara Norfolk General Hospital , located in Norfolk, VA, is a 525-bed tertiary care facility that is home to the only Level I Adult Trauma Center and burn trauma unit in Hampton Roads, and also serves as the primary teaching hospital for Eastern Virginia Medical School. In addition to the high-quality heart program at Sentara Heart Hospital, our facility is home to Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance and several other dedicated facilities and specialized services.
