Job Description The staff nurse provides direct nursing care to patients of all ages who have undergone surgical intervention requiring post anesthesia care with emphasis placed on airway management and circulation. Responsibilities Clinical Practice and Care Management Involves the patient and/or family in the utilization of processes which respects patients rights. Prepares for the care, safety, comfort and privacy of the patient in accordance with their individual needs. Completes an age specific physical, biological and psychological assessment of the patient for infant, toddler, preschooler, school age, adolescent, adult, and older adult in the holding area. Identifies critical elements for each age group using the following tools: chart review patient observation patient/family interview communication with other team members (health care providers) reaffirmation of patient identification verification of surgical procedure patient/familys understanding of procedure analyzes and reports abnormal assessment to anesthesia/surgeon Reassesses the patient upon transfer to OR and accommodates patients changing needs. Uses nursing process to formulate plan of care based on assessment and individual needs of the patient. Assists anesthesia with induction and throughout procedure. Utilizes positioning aids to facilitate procedure, protecting pressure points and maintaining normal anatomical alignment. Transport patient to OR and PACU in a safe and timely manner. Provides specific attention to supplies and equipment based on the cultural needs and age of the patient, infant, toddler, preschooler, school age, adolescent, adult, and older adult. Utilizes a collaborative interdisciplinary process to provide appropriate patient/family education. Accurately identifies and records specimens according to policy. Gives complete and accurate report to Recovery. Assists Recovery as needed with direct nursing care. Demonstrates a working knowledge of all equipment; maintains equipment in safe and proper working condition through correct use. Job Summary and Qualifications Position Details: Self/preferential scheduling posted four weeks in advance for you to have predictability in your schedule Culture of mutual respect and collaboration among all surgical staff Continuous investment in equipment including surgical instruments, devices and patient positioning for you to do your best work with patient safety and workflow efficiency in the Operating Room Rounding with unit leaders, including charge nurses, to ensure your voice is heard on suggestions for patient care and surgical workflow improvement On-call is required during select non-business hours What you will do in this role: Evaluate patients prior to surgery Provide patient and family education surrounding the procedure and peri-operative process Assume responsibility for patient preparation, including intravenous therapy, preoperative medications, and surgical site verification Participate in surgical site verification, including briefing, time out, debriefing, and universal protocols, according to hospital policy Recognize and respond to patient emergencies Deliver high-quality, patient-centered care while managing evidence-based practices and continuous improvement initiatives Be an integral member of a dynamic interdisciplinary team – consisting of the provider(s), surgeons, surgical technologists and more Consistently apply the nursing process, critical thinking skills, scientific judgment, technical skills and leadership to independently deliver safe nursing care to patients Assess patient condition, monitor throughout your shift, and document changes in patient condition along with the care provided thoroughly Educate patients and families/caregivers about the patient’s medical condition, treatment and follow-up measures What qualifications you will need: Graduate of an accredited diploma, associates, or baccalaureate degree registered nursing program. Position Objective: Contributes to the provision of high quality, cost-effective patient care and collaboration with other health care team members, with emphasis on designated service lines. Serves as a resource to revenue capture coordinator and surgical services business manager. Oversees the organization and availability of resources necessary for procedures and utilization of appropriate supplies as it relates to specialties. Promotes team collaboration and works with surgeons through effective and consistent communication and coordination. Collaborate with Team Coordinator to ensure an accurate Preference Card system, reflective of standardization, while incorporating actual case needs and accurate charges as an inventory management tool for supplies and instrumentation. Contribute to successful scheduling of surgical cases with the scheduling office utilizing the EPIC computer system. Delegation of tasks to promote departmental team work to achieve targeted metrics and participate in team member’s performance evaluation. Education/Experience Requirements BSN required or completion within two years of hire date. A minimum of two years of operating room experience required. Strong clinical, technical, interpersonal and organizational skills are necessary.
