Job Summary: Operating Room (OR) RN is a valuable member of Perioperative and Surgical team. Responsibilities of the OR RN include, but are not limited to, circulating and scrubbing in surgical cases, monitoring patients and administering moderate sedation in select cases per Heywood Hospital’s moderate sedation policy. OR RN takes call per operating room rotation as required by the operational needs. Provides thorough, timely, and accurate documentation of all pertinent data, therapeutic interventions and patient responses according to established standards. Provides timely and thorough report on assigned patients to other health care team members to ensure integration of services and continuity of patient care. Promotes learning for colleagues and self (e.g. functions as preceptor, instructor, trainer, attends professional development programs, etc.). Proactively identifies risk to patient safety and identifies opportunities to reduce medical/health care errors (i.e. appropriate reporting of errors/incidents). Identifies ethical issues in care and develops plan to address. Safely administers medications and intravenous therapy in accordance with physician’s orders, protocols, policies and procedures. Assesses patient pain level upon admission and as necessary, depending upon diagnosis utilizing the numerical pain scale. Reassesses effectiveness of pain control and notifies physicians as needed, as well as, documents assessment and patients’ response to medication. Responsible for obtaining supporting information and completing required documentation related to medication reconciliation for use by the Attending MD. Collaborates with surgeon, anesthesiologist, clinical coordinator and surgical technicians to assure the patients’ well being during surgical intervention. Maintains sterile fields and directs the correct care, handling, and sterilization of sterile supplies and instruments. Identifies patients correctly by checking patient identification bands and consent forms as well as verifying operative procedure and site before taking patients to the operating room. Applies principles of aseptic practice, oversees the selection and preparation of supplies, equipment and instrumentation to all surgical cases. Applies principles of body mechanics and adapts them to various situations during positioning and transfer of patients. Assures that all techniques and practices carried out during the surgical procedure are accurate and reflect standards of perioperative practice. Maintains sponge, needle and instrument counts according to policies and procedures, including notifying the surgeon of the result of the counts. Identifies, labels, cares for and handles all specimens and cultures according to established policy and procedure.
