The Surgical Technologist II acts as a member of the surgical team providing patient care to the patients undergoing surgical procedures in all areas, including a variety of complex procedures, by assisting the surgeon with instrumentation. Under some supervision, prepares the appropriate instrumentation and materials for use during and on the surgical field, passing instruments, assisting with room turnover, and performs other scrub duties as directed. Essential Functions The essential functions listed are typical examples of work performed by positions in this job classification. Under minimal supervision, provides surgical support to physicians and patients undergoing a surgical procedure in all surgical areas including some complex cases. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments, supplies and equipment in a timely manner. Adheres to all policies and practices for safe identification and handling of specimens and medications. Has knowledge of medications and its intended use on the field. Is aware of patients' weight and maximum doses of medication when appropriate, Is aware and knows patient allergies. Handles specimens and medications using correct technique and according to departmental policy and procedure. Provides information related to care/preparation of surgical instruments/equipment for sterilization/disinfection procedures. Performs the necessary surgical counts on sharps, small items, instruments and sponges with the circulating nurse prior to opening, during, and after closing the incision. Prepares the surgical field by opening correct supplies and preparing instruments and equipment needed for the scheduled case. Assures all materials are available and in working order and verifies own skill in using equipment correctly. Provides indirect patient care activities such as patient transportation. Assist with standard work and cleaning at completion of procedure. Maintains aseptic technique; actively monitors situations that could lead to a breach in aseptic technique. Communicates and immediately corrects breaks in aseptic technique. Ensures that equipment is functioning properly and immediately notifies appropriate personnel of any problems. Tests equipment prior to use on field. Adheres to the LPCHS unit policies regarding equipment maintenance. Assists with restraining uncooperative/combative patient in a safe manner. Serves as a role model for Surgical Tech I. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying. Education: Completion of an accredited program recognized by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or formal structure surgical program (e.g., military services). Experience: Two (2) or more years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience License/Certification RQI Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support or Basic Life Support by American Heart Association (AHA) KNOWLEDGE These are the observable and measurable attributes and skills required to perform successfully the essential functions of the job and are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education or licensure/certification. Newport News, Virginia Overview The RHS OR Tech works under the supervision of the Circulating Registered Nurse in the Operating Room and the Nurse Manager. The OR Tech assists with the coordination of patient care while in the Operating room or procedural area and functions as a team member of the surgical team. Performs job functions based on education, experience, and competency level under the direction of the Surgeon in accordance with all policies, procedures and regulations. May assist in the preparation and maintenance of equipment, instrumentation, and supplies under the direction of an RN, Surgeon, First Assistant or Surgical Technologist. Surgical privileges are established by the surgery department and medical staff and approved by the governing body. What you will do Provides a high level of service excellence and administrative support to all internal and external customers and utilizes the Riverside Care Difference in all interactions. Performs job functions based on education, experience and competency level under the direction of the Surgeon in accordance with all policies, procedures and regulations. Demonstrates a surgical conscience by maintaining an aseptic environment during the surgical procedure and by recording breaks in technique per AORN and AST standards. Demonstrates consistent proficient knowledge of procedure specific utilization of instruments, equipment and supplies. Demonstrates the ability to build collaborative professional relationship with a multi-disciplinary team to support patient care needs. Actively supports and assists the perioperative RN and team in the care of patients. Demonstrates responsibility for accurate handling and management of specimens and surgical count. Demonstrates a sense of urgency to facility positive customer interactions.
