Definition of Position: 

The Interventional Nurse Manager coordinates all aspects (RN, RT, CVT) of patient care for interventional radiology and cardiology procedures utilizing a yearly operational budget in coordination with the OR Director.  The Interventional Nurse Manager maintains working knowledge of all medical/legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements for the multidisciplinary interventional team (RN, RT, CVT) and ensures departmental compliance. The Interventional Nurse Manager provides direct supervision of the RNs, Rad Techs, and CVTs in the department.  The Interventional Nurse Manager works with Radiology, Cardiology, and House Supervisor to coordinate interventional nursing and radiology technologist activity of the department for the day, as needed. The Interventional Nurse Manager reports directly to the OR Director.   


Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  • Accept responsibility for the coordination of all interventional staffing and patient care activities.

  • Verify that interventional personnel provide safe patient care in all areas assigned.

  • Verify that educational resources are available for the interventional team and hold interventional personnel accountable for attendance and completion.
  • Coordinate, facilitate, and manage change within the interventional area.
  • Demonstrate effective communication, consultation, negotiation, and collaboration skills with members of the interventional team and other stakeholders.
  • Collect and analyze data related to performance improvement projects that apply to the area managed.
  • Use effective conflict resolution techniques.
  • Facilitate a multidisciplinary team approach in planning interventional patient care.
  • Evaluate interventional personnel performance and provide guidance, support, and constructive feedback to the interventional team.
  • Interview for interventional personnel selection.
  • Verify that necessary interventional personnel, equipment, and supplies are available.
  • Verify interventional personnel compliance with organizational policies and procedures and regulatory and accreditation standards.

  • Ensure interventional personnel receive their mandated breaks and lunches, as able.
  • Oversee management of supplies and par levels, restocking room, tracking expiration dates, rotating stock, and receiving, unpacking, labeling, and shelving incoming inventory, assigning those duties accordingly and as needed.
  • Function in a staff role, as needed, to include:
      • Nursing/Circulator Role
        • Administer medications as ordered, including anticoagulants, vasoactive agents, contrast, and emergency drugs.
        • Maintain sterile technique and assist with procedures as needed.
        • Act as patient advocate and anticipate needs of the interventionalist.
        • Recognize and respond rapidly to complications (e.g., arrhythmia, bleeding, reaction to contrast, stroke alerts, cardiac arrest).
        • Contrast Allergy Management Collaboration
          • Works collaboratively with Rad Tech and physicians to identify and address contrast allergies or sensitivities.
          • Participates in pre-procedure discussions regarding appropriate contrast agents (e.g., switching to iso-osmolar).
          • Ensures allergy considerations are communicated during the timeout.
      • Moderate Sedation Role
        • When assigned, the RN monitoring the patient for moderate sedation may not engage in tasks that would compromise continual assessment.
        • Verifies ASA classification and consults anesthesia for an ASA score of IV or greater.
        • Provide moderate sedation per protocol and monitors vital signs, hemodynamics, oxygenation, ventilation, level of consciousness, and responses.
        • Provides appropriate nursing interventions for complications.
      • Scrub Role
        • When assigned, functions as the scrub technologist using sterile techniques to assist physicians during interventional and catheter-based procedures.
        • Prepares and organizes sterile instruments, guidewires, catheters, sheaths, embolic materials, and procedural trays.
        • Anticipates physician needs and responds quickly and accurately during critical moments.
        • Demonstrates familiarity with vascular anatomy, device sizing, catheter selection, and table-side procedural flow.
        • Actively communicate with monitor person to ensure procedure activities and times are documented
      • Monitor Role (Hemodynamic & Procedural Monitoring)
        • When assigned, functions as the primary monitor technologist, recording hemodynamic data, pressures, and procedural events.
        • Ensures allergy considerations are communicated during the timeout and reflected in procedural documentation.
        • Operates and troubleshoots physiological monitoring systems (e.g., hemodynamic recorders, ECG, oxygen saturation).
        • Documents all supplies used, implants, contrast usage, and procedural details accurately.
        • Communicates real-time findings to the procedural team, ensuring accurate documentation of events, medications, and device deployment.
      • Peri-Procedure
        • Assists with patient preparation, patient positioning, connecting monitoring equipment and equipment placement.
        • In collaboration with the clinical team, verify allergies, NPO status, renal function, and other relevant clinical factors.
        • Performs patient identification, procedure verification, and timeout processes in accordance with institutional policy.
        • Perform sheath pulls and vascular access management as needed.
      • Department Support
        • Ensure and assist with, when needed, room turnover efficiency (post procedure cleanup such as sharps and biohazard materials disposal according to policy, preparing room for next case via restocking, set-up, checking lead availability, etc.).
        • Ensure all devices (e.g., ultrasound, IVUS, etc.) are cleaned, charged, and properly stored, assisting as needed.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Education

Required: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing. BSN in Nursing. Evidence of appropriate continuing education for skill level and area of practice.

Licenses/ certifications/ registrations

Required: Current RN license in the State of Oregon; current BLS, ACLS certification; Certifications specific to areas of clinical specialty preferred (e.g., RCIS, NIH Stroke Scale), IV certification. Infusion pumps, PCA pumps, and other medical equipment, computer, printer, photocopier, and patient charts. Ability to provide care for the patient's age-specific, cultural, physical, and psychosocial wellbeing.

 

Experience

Required: At least one year’s experience in Interventional Radiology or Cath Lab circulating and monitoring OR as a manager/supervisor/coordinator in an OR.

Preferred: Management or Supervisory experience in Interventional Radiology or Cath Lab, IR/IC CDM maintenance, scrubbing interventional cases.

Responsibilities Clinical Care & Patient Management Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments and specialty-specific nursing visits Perform post-operative wound checks, dressing changes, and wound care management as applicable Administer medications, injections, immunizations, and treatments as ordered by physicians Assist with procedures and examinations specific to the specialty area Monitor vital signs and document patient responses to treatments Recognize and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition Perform diagnostic tests including EKGs, spirometry, glucose monitoring, and CLIA-waived laboratory tests as appropriate to scope of practice Conduct focused nursing visits for blood pressure monitoring, suture/staple removal, injection appointments, weight checks, and routine procedures Oversee nursing care essential to the assessment, promotion, maintenance and restoration of patients' health and wellness Oversee patient needs and suggest solutions to patient care problems Electronic Health Record Management & Communication Monitor and triage Epic InBasket messages in accordance with clinic protocols Provide telephone triage for patient calls regarding urgent/emergent care and clinical questions Document all patient interactions, assessments, and interventions accurately in Epic Manage referrals and coordinate care between specialties Respond to patient portal messages and telephone calls within established timeframes Assist with prior authorization requests and coordinate with referral staff as needed Process prescription refill requests and coordinate with providers as needed Maintain awareness of communication issues between physicians, nurses and patients receiving care in the GSMG Clinic Demonstrate ability to resolve communication concerns with patients, family members and physicians Patient Education & Support Provide comprehensive patient and family education on disease processes, medications, and treatment plans Develop and deliver specialty-specific education materials and instruction Counsel patients on post-operative care, medication compliance, and lifestyle modifications specific to the specialty Support patients in understanding diagnostic procedures and test preparations Facilitate patient understanding of treatment options and discharge instructions Convey empathy and compassion to patients and family members Leadership & Staff Management Serve as member of the GSMG clinic leadership team Facilitate development of department mission, goals, policies, procedures, and work standards Establish, maintain, and evaluate clinical services, including: Development and recording of patient information Supporting medical staff communications with patients and other providers Transmitting information accurately and in a timely manner Performing centralized nursing services, including timely and cost-effective ordering and stocking of supplies Select, orient, train, and evaluate clinical staff Schedule clinical staff to support the range and needs of medical group medical staff providers Evaluate the performance of clinical staff through monitoring of individual work performance and competency evaluation Ensure the development and delivery of clinical education to staff Mentor and provide guidance to medical assistants, nurses and other support staff Demonstrate proper nursing skills through job performance Team Collaboration & Clinical Support The employee supports the hospital mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures.
