In an environment of continuous quality improvement, the Surgical Tech Extern will gain hands-on work experience while finishing up their last half of their degree program and clinical rotation. The Surgical Tech Extern will assist Surgical department with carrying out patient care activities within the scope of training and experience. Exhibits the MHS Standards of Excellence and exercises strict confidentiality at all times. Job Functions: Under the observation of the surgical tech, OR Nurse or Surgeon performs a variety of preparatory, scrubbing and related services necessary to provide patient service in the operating room and assists with surgical cases in all specialty areas. Provides a clean, safe, and efficient area conducive to optimal patient care. Utilizes aseptic surgical techniques in the preparation of materials, supplies and equipment for surgical procedures (this includes but not limited to assistance with gowning and gloving; preparation and draping of the surgical area; provision of a sterile field, instruments, suture and related materials; anticipation of the Surgeons' needs; passing of instruments and/or supplies; holding of retractors, observing and reporting possible breaks in aseptic technique; and assisting in maintaining a sterile, dry, unobstructed field). Acts as a scrub assistant for surgical procedures and maintains basic knowledge of a variety of procedures. Ensures the environmental disinfection, safety, and efficiency of the operating room. This includes but not limited to setting up the room for each case including moving equipment (i.e., tables, cameras, microscopes, fracture table, and instrument pans), operating the various types of equipment used during operating room procedures, and returning equipment post procedure. Notifies appropriate staff of equipment and supply problems. Transports patients and/or equipment and supplies. Overview The obstetric unit in Women’s & Infants’ Services is comprised of 16 LDRP (labor/delivery/recovery/postpartum) rooms and an additional 8 post-partum or general care rooms. We provide Level II Maternal Specialty care and deliver approximately 1,750 babies each year under the care of our OB/GYN physician teams from three local clinics. Our Women’s & Infants’ team is supported by a full-time W&I Licensed Social Worker, Inpatient and Outpatient Lactation Support Services and a Women’s Center Outreach team. The Appeals Nurse works denied and underpaid accounts to obtain full reimbursement for services provided and identify the underlying root cause.
