Registered Nurse- Progressive Care Unit

Position Details: The PCU is a unit that provides care to patients age 18 and older requiring a higher level of care and surveillance than a general med/surg floor but not presenting the need for critical care in an intensive care unit. The PCU patient population at any given time is a cross sample of the hospital census, just to a slightly more acute degree. For this reason, a broad scope is needed for those wishing to work in PCU as they care for all systems from neuro to cardiac to GI and beyond. Patients in the progressive care unit require nursing assessment and reassessment every 2 to 4 hours. Clinically, they may present with a variety of medical needs including but not limited to: New onset asymptomatic dysrhythmia responding to treatment; hypertensive or hypotensive urgency; hemodynamically stable myocardial infarction; stable neurological deficits; confusion/agitation/substance withdrawal; respiratory distress or evidence of compromised gas exchange when hemodynamically stable and responding to treatment; maintenance/initiation of BIPAP/CPAP or high flow oxygen therapy in which further deterioration is unlikely after initiation. Unit specific certifications required include ACLS, basic dysrhythmia interpretation, NIHSS and ASLS, these classes are offered through Mercy and should be completed upon 90 days from hire. Qualifications: Education: Graduated from a school of nursing (associate's degree, Diploma, or BSN). Licensure: Is personally responsible for obtaining, and maintaining, a current RN license within the hiring state and/or compact licensure in which nursing duties are performed and must meet all state board of nursing requirements. A Brief Overview Performs a variety of preparatory, scrubbing and related duties necessary to provide patient care in the Operating Room specialty service capacity. Assist with surgical cases in all surgical specialties. Essential Functions Prepares the operating room by reviewing case cart and supplying it with supplies and instruments to provide appropriate patient care Assembles supplies and equipment for scheduled procedure according to the physician’s preferences and the procedure Inspects equipment for proper working condition Maintain sterile practices when opening packages and preparing for the procedure Prepare for specialty cases and maintain up-to-date knowledge of advancements and techniques. Participate in time out/sign out processes Maintains the sterile field during the procedure. Follow principles of aseptic technique and appropriate operating/procedure room procedures following AORN guidelines. Scrubs to assist the surgeon in the completion of surgical procedures by demonstrating a working knowledge of surgical instrumentation and equipment needed for a variety of procedures. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, passing instruments and providing sterile items in an efficient manner, as directed by the surgeon Practices sharps safety techniques (safety zone, safe passing) Performs appropriate counts prior to the operation and before incision is closed Prepares and labels fluids and medications on the sterile field Prepares specimens for pathologic analysis Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization Assists operating room team with environmental cleaning and case turnovers Maintains availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays Assists in maintaining adequate supplies in the operating room for immediate access during procedure. Store and stock supplies as needed Updates preference cards following each procedure to ensure appropriate supplies are available and communicates to service lead Assist with OR patient care processes as directed by nursing and anesthesia Participates in assigned on call activities. Perform physical requirements as described in the Physical Requirements section Education Qualifications Graduate of an accredited School of Surgical Technologist OR applicable surgical technologist course of study Required Experience Qualifications Minimum 2 years of experience working as a Surgical Technologist and competency in scrubbing in 2 or more surgical specialties as a Surgical Technologist. Candidates with the Surgical Technologist certification fulfill this requirement without the experience.
