SCOPE OF SERVICE The Queen’s Medical Center Emergency Department (ED) is a 45-bed unit that provides comprehensive emergency medical and nursing services 24 hours a day for patients of all ages. The QMC Emergency Department is designated, by the State of Hawaii, as the Trauma Center for Hawaii and is designated by the American College of Surgeons as the only Level I Trauma Center in the region. QMC is accredited by JCAHO as a Comprehensive Stroke Center. The Emergency Department is also the 5th Gold Certified Geriatric Emergency Departments in the nation. A trauma team is available 24 hrs/day, seven-days-a-week, and may be activated by the ER Attending or RN on duty. A separate Fast Track/Mid Track area is opened from 07:00 am to 03:00 am for patients meeting the Fast Track/Mid Track criteria. A Stroke Code protocol may be activated on patients meeting the stroke criteria. The medical center also has a STEMI Code protocol with Cath Lab capabilities. The Psychiatric Residency program provides 24-hour psychiatric consultative services as requested by the Emergency Department physician. Adults constitute 96.6% of patients seen. The remaining 3.4% of the patients are under the age of 18. The top 9 chief complaints include abdominal pain, shortness of breath, chest pain, sepsis, various traumas, psychiatric problems, cold symptoms, headache and weakness. There are three primary treatment areas: Main ER (21 Rooms, not including hallways) - All rooms are equipped with monitoring capability, suction, oxygen, and airway supplies. There are some rooms that also have specialized equipment. Triage Nurse

Primary Purpose: The person in this position is a member of the Patient Centered Health Care Home team where each team member plays an integral role in providing patient-centered health care. S/he provides triage services telephonically and personally by assessing patients for urgency of medical intervention then coordinating their access to care. Essential Duties: Triage Function Triage calls for same day appointments for patients when none is available, based upon predetermined protocols. Assess and establish medical urgency and language needs of walk in patients desiring same day access. Provide health advice and information telephonically or personally to patients based on existing protocols and/or as directed by a provider. SCOPE OF SERVICE The QET 1 Pre/Post Unit is a 10 bed semi-private outpatient unit. The unit will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The QET 1 Pre/Post Unit provides care for Interventional Recovery patients over the age of 14. Most patients in the QET 1 Pre/Post Unit are pre- and post- diagnostic and interventional procedures completed in the Interventional Recovery (IR) and Cardiac Invasive Services (CIS) departments. Common interventional procedures may include, but are not limited to catheter/tube placement (gastrostomy, cholecystectomy, nephrostomy, biliary, etc.), TIPS, pelvic angiogram, Y90 treatment, vascular access (port, CVC, PICC, etc.) placement, diagnostic cerebral angiogram, carotid stenting, neurovascular embolization (AVM, DAVF, MMA, etc.) cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) patching, and tumor embolization. Common cardiac procedures may include, but are not limited to cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology studies (EPS), permanent pacemaker insertion, head upright tilt table testing (HUT), peripheral transluminal angioplasty (PTA), percutaneous transluminal angioplasty, coronary artery stent placements, and cardioversions. SCOPE OF SERVICE The Queen Emma Tower Neuroscience ICU (NSICU) is a 14-bed ICU with 8 beds on QET4D and 6 beds on QET 5D. The NSICU is dedicated to the care of patients with neurological illness. The unit operates on a 24-hour basis, with 24-hour neurointensivist and neuroscience acute care nurse practitioner coverage. QMC has the only dedicated NSICU in the State of Hawaii and supports Hawaii’s first (and currently only) TJC Comprehensive Stroke Center, the only American College of Surgeons Level I Trauma Center and only NAEC Level IV Epilepsy Center. QET 4D/5D NSICU provides care for adult, geriatric, and pediatric patients. The most frequent admissions/diagnoses include: post-op from neurosurgical or neurointerventional procedures, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, ischemic stroke, intracerebral and subarachnoid hemorrhage, CNS tumors, status epilepticus, and neuromuscular illnesses such as Guillain-Barre Syndrome, and myasthenia gravis.
