Medical Assistant Lead, Cardiology - Hartford - Full Time

Under limited supervision, functions as a working clinical lead and providing oversight in the Department (approximate allocation is 85% clinical practice as a patient care support and 15% administrative leadership). Oversees daily clinical operations of department ensuring optimal use of all resources at all times to achieve productivity, patient access and patient satisfaction goals; plans, implements and monitors operational and administrative systems to achieve goals. Works directly with patients, parents and doctors and strives for 100% patient satisfaction and positive outcomes in all cases. Medical Assistant Team Lead is one of the first point of contacts to service the patient prior to seeing the physician. Directs the flow of activities throughout the patient’s visit. Ability to remain calm under pressure and ability to calm others during stressful situations, especially young children. Document patient medications. DEPARTMENTAL SUPPORT • Provide support as needed for departmental medical record audits. • Cleans and stocks patient care rooms between patients. • Maintains appropriate inventories of all medical supplies. Performs clean sweeps everyday of clinical area and restock inventory. • Stocks and maintains all patient related forms and educational materials. • Utilizes equipment appropriately and notifies Practice Manager in a timely fashion of equipment/facility break-down or damage. Supports the clinic’s quality initiative. Collaborates with Provider and Nursing to identify any changes to staffing schedules. DOCUMENTATION • Documentation is legible and falls within the appropriate MA scope/Organizational documentation guidelines. • Accurately documents patient information on appropriate forms. Demonstrates accuracy in basic data entry and data retrieval of paper/electronic patient records. OTHER ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to: • Managing patient flow by bringing patient to exam room and completing vitals in a timely manner. • Maintains proper documentation in Epic and holds other medical assistants accountable for proper documentation • Triage walk-in patients, emergency patients and determine if the patient needs to be seen the same day and which doctor should see the patient • Communicate with front desk if doctor is running late or if urgent is coming in • Follows proper opening and closing exam room procedures (see handout) • Trained in department specific tasks that are defined by the Practice Manager and Medical Director • Performs other duties as may be assigned to promote the health, safety and comfort of CT Children's patients and families. Education Required: High School Diploma, GED or equivalent; vocational training (defined below) may substitute. Vocational training is defined as one of the following: Completion of Medical Assistant training program approved by the American Association for Medical Assistants or American Medical Technologists or similar program provided by the military; completion of Certified Nursing Assistant Program (Connecticut certification preferred); Current BSN nursing student in an accredited program and having completed 2 years of study and “Fundamentals of Nursing” course. The Team Lead for Utilization Review (UR) is responsible for the day-to-day activities and oversight of the UR Nurses, under the guidance and support of the Manager of Case Management and Director of the Center. Provides leadership and direction around scheduling, supervision and daily operations, while looking strategically at how workflow and process improvement can optimize and improve the role of Case Management and patient/family care through the institution. Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families. Unit Leadership- Delegates duties and tasks associated with patient care to clinical staff according to hospital policy and their scope of practice. As assigned, contributes to the leadership of the unit by functioning as the Resource Nurse and/or by participating in the professional development of others through preceptor/mentor activities. Supports the unit/department’s work productivity and resource management activities. Documentation/Communication - Completes all required documentation in a timely manner, according to CCMC policies and standards; necessary information is effectively communicated to all members of the health care team. Patient/Family Partnership & Education- Partners with child and family in evaluating outcomes. Monitors, trends, and evaluates patient/family responses to treatment. Provides appropriate education to patients and families regarding all aspects of care according to CCMC policies and standards; supports the organization’s efforts to patient/family education. CCMC Standards - Demonstrates support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with the CCMC Standards. Education and/or Experience Required: ASN required upon hire. BSN preferred upon hire and required within 3 years of hire. Minimum of 2 years clinical experience on Medical/Surgical unit; PACU and/or pediatric experience preferred. Endoscopy Nurse requires knowledge of surgical specialties relative to procedures and equipment. License and/or Certifications Required: Current State of Connecticut DPH Registered Nurse licensure OR current multistate nursing license under the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) required and maintained thereafter. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR in adult, child & infant is required upon hire. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required within six months of hire. Specialty licensure/certification may be required, as specified by department. Position Specific Job License and/or Certification Required: Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Required within 6 months of hire or before staff has completed dept. orientation if this is longer than 6 months. Knowledge, skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: Theory, principles, techniques and practice of professional nursing. State regulations regarding nursing practice. Clinical standards of care; documentation and patient record policies and standards. Teaching techniques; identification of learning needs and provision of patient/family education. Developmental and population-specific patient & family assessment techniques and how to apply to practice. Accreditation and certification requirements and standards. Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Basic proficiency in utilization of personal computers in networked Windows-based health care environment to access related software applications; locate, open, edit and print files and information utilized by the unit; and use of Internet as research tool. Ability to: Work individually or with within teams and/or other organizations within the medical and research community. Make clinical and procedural decisions using the nursing process. Maintain confidentiality of information Delegate appropriately to ancillary staff. Communicate effectively with individuals and groups both orally and in writing.
