In this role you will partner with the rest of the clinical team to provide patients the highest quality of care. In this role, a Medical Assistant is an employee who performs a wide variety of patient care services under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, advanced practice nurse (APN) or physician. Such services can involve therapeutic and/or diagnostic procedures. Perform any or all duties involving direct patient care as assigned by the registered nurse or physician and within the scope of the Nursing policies and procedures. Appropriately implement and document patient and family education as delegated by the RN or physician. Obtain and record vital signs. Perform tests, i.e. pregnancy tests, urinalysis, and hemocults, etc., specific to the patient population. Document all aspects of patient care according to hospital policies and procedures. Perform phlebotomy services. Assist with collection of specimens. Perform labeling and logging of specimens in compliance with hospital standards. Performs other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications: A completed High School diploma or equivalent from an accredited body A current certificate of cardiopulmonary resuscitation training Must have phlebotomy experience Experience working in a community health setting Completion of a certified/registered program for medical assistants that is recognized by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross Preferred Qualifications: Considerable skill in communicating verbally, in determining priorities and in organizing work; ability to maintain an organized, alphabetized filing system General working knowledge of PC. Provides assigned skilled nursing services, including disease management, wound care, catheter and drain care, specimen collection, patient monitoring, and other procedures within the LPN’s scope of practice and demonstrated competency. Assists the registered nurse or authorized practitioner with specialized procedures and prepares equipment and treatment materials using appropriate infection-prevention and aseptic techniques. Reviews the patient’s medication regimen within the LPN’s scope of practice and reports medication discrepancies, adverse reactions, non-adherence, or other concerns to the supervising registered nurse and appropriate practitioner. Reinforces education provided to patients, families, and caregivers regarding disease management, medications, treatments, safety measures, and appropriate self-care techniques. Prepares accurate and complete clinical notes and other required documentation within established agency timeframes, including completion of visit documentation in the EMR/EVV system within 24 hours of the visit. Adheres to infection-prevention, patient-safety, emergency-preparedness, and quality standards while maintaining a safe environment for patients, caregivers, and staff. PURPOSE AND SCOPE: The professional registered nurse Outpatient RN CAP 1 is an entry level designation into the Clinical Advancement Program (CAP). This position is accountable and responsible for the provision and coordination of clinically competent care including assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation for an assigned group of patients. This may include delegation of appropriate tasks to direct patient care staff including but not limited to RNs, LVN/LPNs and Patient Care Technicians. Location Lurie Children's Pediatrics - Uptown Job Description General Summary: The Medical Assistant is responsible for daily clinical work in the outpatient/primary care setting in accordance with the Ambulatory Medical Assistant Scope of Practice. Assists Physicians and other staff under the direction of a Registered Nurse, Advanced Practice Nurse and/or Physician. Essential Job Functions: • Depending on location, performs phlebotomy and specimen processing as directed by delegating provider. • May align to specific or multiple divisions. • Administers, including but not limited to, intramuscular injections, subcutaneous injections, intradermal skin testing, topical medications, ophthalmic drops and nasal spray. • Depending on location, performs ECGs, places Holter monitors and downloads telemetry data. Responsible for ECG and Holter program for a specific location. • Works in conjunction with other staff to maximize clinic flow. • Intervenes appropriately in emergency situations. • Documents data and changes in the Electronic Medical Record. • Provides assistance and or back up support for administrative tasks including but not limited to scheduling patient visits and performing basic “check-in, check out” activities. • Obtains measurements, patient history and other intake activities. • Stocks and maintains the clinic area including ordering of supplies as needed. • Demonstrates knowledge of pertinent aspects and competency with protocols related to the use of chemical disinfection, high level disinfection, and sterilization if required as part of the responsibilities of the role. • Depending on location, directs High Level Disinfection scope cleaning in accordance with defined HLD processes • Completes trainings and education including but not limited to Healthcare Provider CPR. • Other job functions as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • High school diploma required. • Successful completion of a formal Medical Assistant program. • Possesses 3 or more years of relevant clinical experience. • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) (AAMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) preferred but not required. • Some college, preferred. • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association. • Excellent communication/listening skills. Substantial interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with pediatric patients, families, physicians, nursing and other allied health and medical center personnel. Comer Emergency Department is a 21-bed, Level 1 Pediatric Academic Trauma Center dedicated to providing high-quality, evidence-based care to the children of South Side of Chicago and beyond. With 2 trauma bays, 1 special procedures room and a dedicated resuscitation bay, we are equipped to handle the most critical situations. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity . You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area. A staff nurse is a registered professional nurse (RN) who manages patient centered care that is outcome directed. Patient centered care principles and professional nursing practice standards provide the foundation for the nurse to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care provided. The staff nurse assumes the primary responsibility and accountability for all patient care personally provided and that provided by those directly under her/his supervision. Essential Job Functions Utilizes appropriate assessment skills to determine patient needs. Develops a plan of care for those patients whose needs do not require the expertise of a Case Manager or collaborates with the Case Manager to develop a plan of care for specified patients. Provides input into the development of clinical paths with assigned Case Manager. Uses care plan and/or clinical path in providing patient care. Delegates as appropriate based on patient needs and competencies of staff. Competently performs patient care according to hospital policy and nursing practice within clinical specialty, as documented by the respective clinical skills inventory evaluation and completion of competency days. Evaluates care given and adjusts plan of care to meet the changing needs of the patient. Documents appropriately in patient care records. Prepares and administers medication/treatment according to the physician's orders, utilizing professional knowledge base to assure patient safety. Works collaboratively with other patient care and multidisciplinary team members to provide patient centered care. Documents or ensures documentation of all of patient care from admission to discharge according to hospital policies. Incorporates discharge planning into clinical pathway or plan of care to provide patients with smooth transition from hospital to home. Provides cost-effective care by appropriate utilization of time, supplies and personnel. Evaluates patient care interventions and collaborates with all team members to make changes as necessary. Initiates and/or participates in patient care conferences. Assumes the responsibility to interact on a consistent basis with the patient and family providing coordination of the plan of care for those patients whose needs do not require the expertise of a Case Manager. Obtaining and maintaining SANE certification within this role is a condition of employment. Required Education : Associate Degree in Nursing; BSN degree or higher preferred. Associate Degree Nurses are required to enroll in a BSN program within six (6) to nine (9) months of hire, and make progress toward and complete their BSN degree within 30 months. ADN nurses receive 100% tuition reimbursement towards a BSN degree from an accredited program.
