Gastrointestinal bleeds, overdoses, diabetic keto acidosis, respiratory failure, renal failure, and drug/alcohol withdrawal are examples of the more common diagnoses seen on this unit. Many of the patients of MSCC have comorbidities that complicate their course of treatment, which causes the nursing team to collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to provide the best possible care and support. NCC is a 33-bed unit with a widely diverse neurosurgical, neurotrauma, neuroradiology, and medical neurological patient population, and is one of the largest neurocritical care units in the country. NCC staff care for some of the highest acuity neuro patients in the state and has the highest number of patient days in all the IUH Adult Academic Health Center. About the Unit: This unit specializes in Surgical Oncology, specifically: pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer, and ear/nose/and throat cancers. Additionally, the unit often sees surgical interventions, related to upper\lower GI, as well as medical patients on shifts. This unit does not administer chemo. This is a high functioning, fast paced surgical and specialized care unit. Clinical Nurses will be a part of a lot of peer-to-peer team collaboration and decision making for recovering post-surgical patients with a cancer diagnosis.
