Overview: JOB PURPOSE: The APP Fellow will work within a Critical Care team under the direction of an APP and a Physician to provide comprehensive and consistent care for critically ill patients in a hospital setting. The Fellow will gain experience in assessing, diagnosing, and managing care, selecting interventions, performing required procedures, and consistently evaluating patients' progress toward medical goals. Responsibilities: KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Provides direct clinical services for critically ill adult patients with cardiac or multi-system failure, within institutional guidelines and utilizing evidence-based clinical practice standards under the supervision of the patient's physician. 2. Obtains patient health histories and completes physical examinations and documents findings in accordance with hospital requirements. 3. Orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests, explaining the necessity, preparation, nature, and anticipated effects of procedure(s) to patients, patients' family, staff, and healthcare learners. 4. Performs approved therapeutic or diagnostic procedures based upon the patient's clinical status and documents procedures in accordance with hospital requirements; assists the physician with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, etc. 5. Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation and external cardiac massage; airway management including bag and mask ventilation, endotracheal intubation and extubation, ordering of life supporting drugs according to established protocols, and defibrillation according to Advanced Cardiac Life Support standards. 6. May perform thoracentesis, thoracostomy tube, and bronchoscopy, as well as other indicated procedures while under the direct supervision of an intensivist until independent competency is confirmed. 7. Under physician direction and within the credentialing standards of the Hospital, inserts and manages arterial catheters, central venous catheters, pulmonary artery catheters, Chest tubes, thoracenteses, endotracheal tubes, and extra glottic devices. Interfaces with patients using monitoring and instrumentation equipment, and directs and educates others in performing these functions. 8. Formulates and implements a treatment plan for acute illness management in collaboration with the attending physician(s) and documents in medical records and appropriate narrative summaries. 9. Assesses patients for changes in status and institutes appropriate interventions, including initiation of necessary emergency interventions to stabilize the patient. 10. Incorporates clinical research findings in the development and implementation of standards of care. 11. Supports IRB-approved clinical research/trials through a variety of activities, including but not limited to: obtaining consent; ordering diagnostic tests; recording laboratory and diagnostic results; administering therapeutic interventions; and documenting and reporting patient outcomes, including toxicities or adverse events. 12. Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research. 13. Serves as a clinical expert and education consultant to nursing, members of the healthcare team, and the larger community. 14. Identifies educational needs of the family and participates in teaching opportunities. 15. Assesses educational needs, plans, provides, and evaluates educational programs for nursing staff, interdisciplinary healthcare team, and community. 16. Other duties as assigned. Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions: Staff Management/Leadership * Coordinate internal education for development of staff * Evaluate employee performance using approved Performance Management model in accordance with Human Resources Policy and Practice. * Provide day to day oversight of research staff * Provide appropriate levels of staffing and manage schedule of personnel * Ensure appropriate orientation, education, credentialing, licensing, and continuing professional development for personnel, including study-specific training, GCP training and IATA certification * Use behavioral interviewing techniques to hire and accept for transfer candidates to fill vacancies in the department. * Use independent judgment to reward exemplary performance and address substandard performance in accordance with the employee disciplinary policy. * Coordinate and monitor Trust survey completion and appropriate action planning sessions and progress Business Development * Assist physicians with recruitment of clinical trials * Serve as the central operational contact for sponsors, physicians, and system departments * Develop and maintain collateral material to support research services (printed and on WEB page) * Monitor key trends in the industry * Participate in clinical research related and organizational policy formulation * Contributes to the strategic planning process by leading operations to fulfill the mission, vision and strategic goals Study Management * Coordinate review of all protocols for feasibility with affected departments and primary investigators * Coordinate clinical trial related procedures with other healthcare disciplines * Evaluate the quality and appropriateness of clinical trials, research projects and research related procedures * Assist with study building and management in the CTMS system * Coordinate the study approval process with departmental and system leaders * Monitor progress of research studies from start-up through close-out and identify and resolve issues * Operationalize feasible clinical studies across multiple WHS facilities * Oversee investigational drug and device accountability and tracking * Coordinate sponsor monitoring visits and audits, and resolution of issues Finance * Assist with annual research departmental budget development and management * Participate in research study budget development, including time and effort analysis * Monitor the appropriate routing of research charges in the Epic EMR system * Assist with monthly departmental billing * Collaborate with Revenue Management to ensure that WRI processes lead to appropriate research billing Regulatory/Compliance * Ensure FDA and other governmental agency compliance with all FDA, Post Market and IIR trials * Work with compliance department on an ongoing basis * Assist with evaluating and communicating appropriate and compliant research billing, including CIB * Assist with appropriate routing of new research projects * Coordinate and support FDA and other governmental research audits * Provide support and assistance for additional research initiatives Performs other duties as assigned Complies with all WellStar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
