Monitors and charts patients, collects sample, and performs other tasks as assigned, all under the direction of registered nurses and doctors. Responsibilities: Administers prescribed medications, gives injections and vaccines, reads PPD results. Performs electrocardiograms (EKG) and screening tests. Obtains and tests specimens following standard operating procedures and documents results, taking appropriate action with unexpected results. Prepares specimens for transport as necessary. Gather information from patient and direct to the RN or Provider when necessary. Assists provider with surgical procedures including positioning patients, keeping a sterile field, and wound cleaning and dressing. Prepares paperwork to complete patient visit. Obtains and documents patient's vital signs as needed and reports abnormal results to provider. Cleans, disinfects, sterilizes and checks to make sure all instruments and equipment are in proper working order. Maintains medication storage closets. Participates in orienting new team members. Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures. Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization. Our 34-bed unit specializes in the care of patients of all ages with pulmonary and complex medical needs, many of whom are technology-dependent. A significant portion of our patient population has compromised lung function from birth, often due to prematurity and other co-morbidities, including neurologic and developmental challenges. Our complex care population consists of a specialized group of patients requiring coordinated care across multiple consulting services. These patients often have longer stays or return to our unit intermittently throughout their lives. In addition, we provide care for general pediatric patients with a range of medical conditions. The center operates Monday through Friday and shifts start at 0530 or 0730, the closing shift stays until the last patient is discharged (on average 4pm, however can be longer depending on patient acuity). We have two operating rooms and serve 7-8 patients per day, usually with only one surgeon. Seven preop/pacu bays are assigned to a patient for use in both phases of care, and the nursing staff adjust their assignments accordingly. Majority of patients receive spinal anesthesia in preop and during recovery require post op ambulation of 100 feet. Discharge teaching requires attention to detail as these are all outpatients.
