Responsibilities* Works with the primary care teams to manage patient flow in a fast-paced outpatient setting. This position will primarily be in our Obstetrics & Gynecology department. The employee will be cross trained in our adult and pediatric practices. Essential Skills include: Efficient patient intake, information gathering, direct patient care (specimen processing, bench lab testing, EKGs, etc.) data entry, managing clinic flow, preparing patients for procedures, medication administration with appropriate documentation, clinical support to providers, patient follow-up, prescription management and other supporting processes. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 30 bed monitored ICU located on the 10th floor of the new C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. The unit is multi-acuity ranging from critically ill to short stay observation. Multidisciplinary care is provided for children from newborn to young adult in partnership with Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Plastic Surgery, Hematology/Oncology, BMT, Nephrology, Transplant Surgery, and Pediatric Cardiology. State of the art technology including ECMO, Nitric Oxide, High Frequency Ventilation, and CRRT are used in the care of patients in the PICU patients. Family centered care including family presence during physician rounds, nursing report, and parent spending the night with their child is supported and encouraged. PICU participates in the NACHRI collaborative to improve quality of care and outcomes. Responsibilities* Clinical Care & Patient Safety Perform comprehensive pre-procedure assessments (history, meds, allergies, anticoagulation status, labs, consents, NPO status). Provide patient and family education regarding procedures (EP study, ablation, cardioversion, device implant/explant) and recovery expectations. Monitor and document patient status in conjunction with anesthesia, hemodynamics, pain, and sedation/analgesia response per policy and scope. Recognize and respond to complications (bleeding/hematoma, tamponade, arrhythmias, vasovagal events, airway compromise, contrast reaction). Intra-Procedure Support (EP Lab) Function as sedation RN (as applicable), maintain sterile field awareness and support procedural flow. Administer medications and IV fluids per provider order and institutional protocols (including antiarrhythmics, anticoagulants, vasopressors as applicable). Ensure accurate time-outs, safety checklists, specimen handling, and implant documentation when applicable. Collaborate with the EP team on case setup, equipment readiness, and emergency preparedness (code cart, pericardiocentesis tray per policy). Care Coordination & Documentation Document assessments, interventions, medications, and procedural events in the electronic medical record. Coordinate with inpatient units, pre/post areas, anesthesia, and scheduling to ensure timely throughput and continuity of care. Participate in handoffs using standardized communication (e.g., SBAR) and ensure follow-up needs are communicated. Quality, Compliance, and Professional Practice Adhere to infection prevention standards, sedation policies, anticoagulation protocols, and regulatory requirements. Participate in quality improvement initiatives (e.g., surgical site infection prevention, falls prevention, documentation audits, patient experience). Maintain required competencies, certifications, and continuing education in EP/cardiac care. Required Qualifications* Current licensure to practice nursing in the state of Michigan. Minimum of 3 years of nursing experience. ICU/PACU/ED/EP/Cath Lab experience within the last 3 years. Moderate sedation competency/experience monitoring sedated patients Experience with monitoring arrhythmia interpretation, hemodynamic pressures. Emergency management of cardiac patients and working knowledge of emergency cardiac medications. Iv insertion and medication administration. Emergency response and rapid clinical decision-making Experience with conscious sedation and airway management. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to multi-task and work effectively in emergent situations. Current BLS/ACLS certification required. Ability to meet physical demands of procedural environment (standing for long periods, moving equipment, patient positioning and wearing protective lead).
