Inpatient Advanced Practice Provider (APP) - Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA) - General Internal Medicine The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is a leading institution focused on cancer care, research, education, and prevention. The Department of General Internal Medicine (GIM), Section of Consultative Medicine, provides comprehensive inpatient and consultative care for patients across the care continuum while supporting the management of chronic and acute medical conditions through a multidisciplinary approach. The Advanced Practice Provider plays an important role in delivering high-quality care and supporting the inpatient consult service. The Advanced Practice Provider works closely with faculty physicians to manage complex medical needs, coordinate care, and support patients throughout hospitalization and treatment. The Advanced Practice Provider contributes to patient education, clinical collaboration, and continuity of care while helping ensure consistent seven-day coverage across the service. The ideal candidate is an experienced Advanced Practice Provider with at least three years of APP experience and a strong foundation in Internal Medicine. Preferred candidates have Internal Medicine experience and/or Weight Management/Obesity Clinic experience and/or Certified Weight Management or Obesity Medication certification. Candidates should demonstrate strong clinical judgment, effective communication skills, job stability, and the ability to transition within one month. Responsibilities Clinical Care & Patient Management Assess patients through comprehensive histories, physical examinations, and psychosocial assessments. Manage chronic and acute medical conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, COPD, and common episodic illnesses. Assess and manage suspected DVT, asymptomatic PE, and chemotherapy-related adverse events. Provide care for acutely ill hospitalized surgical patients. Communicate findings and treatment plans to physicians, patients, and families. Documentation, Orders & Clinical Coordination Complete histories, physical assessments, and progress notes within 24 hours. Order diagnostic testing, medications, and treatments within delegated prescriptive authority. Review laboratory, pathology, radiology, and other diagnostic reports. Complete clinical documentation, including radiology, nuclear medicine, and prescription-related paperwork. Place patients on clinical pathways and support care coordination activities. Care Coordination & Consultation Support General Internal Medicine services in collaboration with faculty physicians. Coordinate care with supervising physicians, consultants, and multidisciplinary teams. Review diagnostic results and assist with patient disposition planning. Facilitate communication across specialties and healthcare teams. Respond to provider consultations and serve as a liaison for patients and families. Education, Research & Professional Development Educate patients and families regarding treatment plans and ongoing care. Provide training and mentorship to nursing personnel, APP students, house officers, and medical students. Participate in clinical research activities and patient eligibility assessments. Attend monthly Consultative Medicine meetings and Division of Internal Medicine Grand Rounds. Professional Practice & Service Promote a service-oriented, patient-centered approach to care. Refer patients to eligibility coordinators in Legacy Clinics within close proximity to the school-based clinic location. Complete all necessary paperwork. Answer incoming calls and route them appropriately. Perform client intake and notify appropriate staff of the client’s arrival. Follow appointment procedures as set by management. Complete opening and closing procedures. Keep the clinic lobby straight and orderly. Directly assist the school-based clinic nurse practitioner with clinic operational tasks, including registration of patients, triage and vital signs, telephone management, patient education and assistance, and other clinic tasks according to procedures, policy, and protocols. Work with the team in ongoing clinic development and implementation as needed. Document all client care and contact appropriately and in a timely manner. Assess the needs of clinic clients and parents and assist as directed by the nurse practitioner and per protocols and procedures. Consult with clients by telephone and provide follow-up, feedback, and assistance as needed. Participate in clinic public health education and registration activities. Assist with follow-up of lab results and other testing results, including follow-up of abnormal values as appropriate and directed by the nurse practitioner. Process lab specimens as assigned by the Medical Director of Pediatrics. Perform phlebotomy duties as needed. Assist other providers in the future as needed due to clinic expansion. The woodlands PICU opened in April 2017 and provides assisted ventilation or other advanced support, such as oscillatory ventilation, nitric oxide administration or cardiovascular pressor support. Responsibilities: Oversee the coordination of patient care, including appointment scheduling, triage, and room assignments. Ensure timely and efficient patient flow, minimizing wait times and optimizing patient experience. Resolve patient complaints and professionally. Provides high level of customer service in all interactions. Maintain an open and accepting environment by remaining culturally sensitive to all patients. Manages a team and ensures they comply with company guidelines particularly related to quality of service. Maintain positive working relationships and coordinate activities with all customers in alignment with practice core values Ensure the clinic complies with all relevant healthcare regulations, including HIPAA and OSHA standards. Oversees providers and provides direction to midlevel healthcare providers (such as physician assistants or nurse practitioners) who work under the supervision of a physician. Ensure that these providers are performing their duties effectively and in accordance with established guidelines. Performs other related duties as assigned.
