Comer Emergency Department is a 21-bed, Level 1 Pediatric Academic Trauma Center dedicated to providing high-quality, evidence-based care to the children of South Side of Chicago and beyond. With 2 trauma bays, 1 special procedures room and a dedicated resuscitation bay, we are equipped to handle the most critical situations. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity . You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area. A staff nurse is a registered professional nurse (RN) who manages patient centered care that is outcome directed. Patient centered care principles and professional nursing practice standards provide the foundation for the nurse to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care provided. The staff nurse assumes the primary responsibility and accountability for all patient care personally provided and that provided by those directly under her/his supervision. Essential Job Functions Utilizes appropriate assessment skills to determine patient needs. Develops a plan of care for those patients whose needs do not require the expertise of a Case Manager or collaborates with the Case Manager to develop a plan of care for specified patients. Provides input into the development of clinical paths with assigned Case Manager. Uses care plan and/or clinical path in providing patient care. Delegates as appropriate based on patient needs and competencies of staff. Competently performs patient care according to hospital policy and nursing practice within clinical specialty, as documented by the respective clinical skills inventory evaluation and completion of competency days. Evaluates care given and adjusts plan of care to meet the changing needs of the patient. Documents appropriately in patient care records. Prepares and administers medication/treatment according to the physician's orders, utilizing professional knowledge base to assure patient safety. Works collaboratively with other patient care and multidisciplinary team members to provide patient centered care. Documents or ensures documentation of all of patient care from admission to discharge according to hospital policies. Incorporates discharge planning into clinical pathway or plan of care to provide patients with smooth transition from hospital to home. Provides cost-effective care by appropriate utilization of time, supplies and personnel. Evaluates patient care interventions and collaborates with all team members to make changes as necessary. Initiates and/or participates in patient care conferences. Assumes the responsibility to interact on a consistent basis with the patient and family providing coordination of the plan of care for those patients whose needs do not require the expertise of a Case Manager. Promotes, has knowledge of and utilizes appropriate patient care protocol relating to the physical, psychosocial and developmental needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients. Required Qualifications Graduate of an NLN accredited School of Nursing Associate of Science in Nursing or higher Current Illinois RN license Active BLS Certification SANE - AA or SANE - P Certification: must be enrolled within 6 months of employment (18 months for new grad RNs). Obtaining and maintaining SANE certification within this role is a condition of employment. Required Education : Associate Degree in Nursing; BSN degree or higher preferred. Associate Degree Nurses are required to enroll in a BSN program within six (6) to nine (9) months of hire, and make progress toward and complete their BSN degree within 30 months. ADN nurses receive 100% tuition reimbursement towards a BSN degree from an accredited program. SUMMARY: The primary purpose of the Assistant Director of Nursing is to assist the Director of Nursing in planning, organizing, developing, and directing the day-to-day functions of the Nursing Department in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern our facility, and as may be directed by the Administrator, the Medical Director, and/or the Director of Nursing, to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times. Assist the Director in determining the staffing needs of the nursing department. Recommend to the Director the number and level of nursing personnel to be employed. Assist the Director in the recruitment and selection of nursing personnel. Ensure that a sufficient number of licensed practical and/or registered nurses are available for each shift to ensure that quality care is maintained. Ensure that a sufficient number of Certified Nursing Assistants are available for each shift to ensure that routing nursing care is provided to meet the daily nursing care needs of each resident. Also ensure that all nursing assistants are enrolled in or have graduated from an approved nursing assistants program. Develop work assignments and schedule duty hours, and/or assist nursing supervisory staff in completing and performing such tasks. Delegate to the Charge Nurse and Nurse Supervisors the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary to perform their assigned duties. Assist the Director in preparing performance evaluations as directed. Make daily rounds of the nursing department to ensure that all nursing personnel are performing their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards. Report findings to Director. Review complaints and grievances made or filed by department personnel. Make appropriate reports to Director as required or as may be necessary. Ensure that departmental disciplinary action is administered fairly and without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, age, sex, religion, handicap, or marital status. Interpret the department’s policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors and government agencies as necessary. Ensure that all nursing personnel participate in the facility’s TB testing program. Participate in the interviewing and selection of residents for admission to the facility. Inform nursing personnel of new admissions, their expected time of arrival, room assignment, etc. Ensure that rooms are ready for new admissions. Greet newly admitted residents upon admission. Escort them to their rooms as necessary. Review nurse’s notes to ensure that they are informative and descriptive of the nursing care being provided, that they reflect the resident’s response to the care, and that such care is provided in accordance with the resident’s wishes. Schedule daily rounds to observe residents and to determine if nursing needs are being met. Monitor medication passes and treatment schedules to ensure that medications are being administered as ordered and that treatments are provided as scheduled. Report medication errors to the Director. Provide direct nursing care as necessary. Report problem areas to Director. Assist in developing and implementing corrective action. Participate in developing, planning, conducting, and scheduling in-service training that provide instructions on “how to do the job” and ensure a well-educated nursing department. Participate in the mandatory new hire orientation. Assist Director in scheduling annual mandatory in-service training for staff. (OSHA, HIPAA, Abuse Prevention, Infection Control, etc.) Assist the Safety Officer in developing safety standards for the nursing department. Assist the Director of Nursing in identifying, evaluating, and classifying routine and job-related functions to ensure that tasks in which there is potential exposure to blood/body fluids are properly identified and recorded. Ensure that nursing personnel work areas (nurse’s station, medication rooms, etc.) are maintained in a clean and sanitary manner. Ensure all resident care rooms, treatment areas, etc., are maintained in a clean, safe and sanitary manner. Ensure that all nursing personnel participate in and conduct all fire safety and disaster preparedness drill in a safe and professional manner. Ensure that an adequate stock level of medications, medical supplies, equipment, etc., is maintained on premises at all times to adequately meet the needs of the residents. Assist the Maintenance Director in developing a preventive maintenance program for maintaining the nursing department’s equipment and supplies in a safe and operable manner. Ensure that only trained and authorized personnel operate the department’s equipment in a safe manner. Participate in the development of written preliminary and comprehensive assessments of the nursing needs of each resident. Assist the MDS/CPC in planning, scheduling, and revising the MDS, including the implementation of RAPs and Triggers. Encourage the resident and his/her family to participate in the development and review of the resident’s plan of care. Be sure that staff members are providing care that reflects the wishes of the resident. Maintain confidentiality of all resident care information including protected health information. Report known or suspected incidents of unauthorized disclosure of such information. Ensure all nursing personnel are knowledgeable of the residents’ responsibilities and rights include the right to refuse treatment. Performs other duties as assigned. Essential Job Functions Utilizes assessment skills to determine patient needs in order to provide comprehensive patient/family care for patients from neonate to geriatric population Identifies learning needs of patients and their family which directly influence patient recovery and develops teaching methods to enhance learning Implements nursing actions based on scheduled surgery, patient assessment, patient developmental needs and incorporates actions into written plan of care Evaluates care given and allows for alterations in nursing interventions to meet the changing needs or conditions of the patient. Documents appropriately in patient care records Successfully completes unit based and hospital competencies as designated competently performs nursing treatments and procedures according to hospital policy and nursing practice within clinical specialty as documented by the respective clinical rotational checklists Maintains current CPR certification Prepares and administers medication/treatment according to the physician's orders utilizing knowledge base to assure patient safety. Works collaboratively with other health team members in providing a holistic approach to health care. Communicates changes to all team members as appropriate Documents all aspects of patient care from admission to discharge according to hospital policies Incorporates discharge planning measures into daily practice in order to provide patients with smooth transition from hospital to home Provides cost-effective care by proper use of time, supplies and personnel Actively participates in unit staff meeting Assists unit in development/attainment of unit goals and objectives Contributes to creating a work climate that encourages positive staff morale, motivation and commitment for all who participate in the care of patients Assumes charge nurse responsibilities as assigned by Clinical Director or designee Shares in leadership responsibilities at various levels by supervising, directing and teaching other employees as it effects patient care Participates in unit activities/goals to promote retention of staff Participates in a changing environment by being supportive and cooperative with changes at the unit level Demonstrates reliability and accountability to the unit and Department of Nursing Incorporates professional standards into practice utilizing written nursing care plans Participates in Quality Improvement data analysis, conclusions and changes determined Participates in the preceptor program either by being a preceptor or assisting in those who are Participates in weekly scheduled in-service Required Qualifications Associate Degree in Nursing; BSN degree or higher preferred. Associate Degree Nurses are required to enroll in a BSN program within six (6) to nine (9) months of hire, and make progress toward and complete their BSN degree within 30 months. ADN nurses receive 100% tuition reimbursement towards a BSN degree from an accredited program.
