Under the general supervision of the Manager of Perioperative Services, and the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for filling the surgical scrub role on all types of minor and major surgical procedures dependent on individual competencies in each surgical specialty. Assists physicians and nurses in various medical and technical procedures. These functions must be in compliance with the philosophy of the center, standards of practice and regulations of governing agencies. Minimum Qualifications • High School graduate or equivalent required • Certification as a Surgical Technologist required • Two years previous experience as an operating room technician desired • Current BCLS Essential Functions Decision making concerning equipment and/or instrumentation sterilization Bio hazardous waste disposal Housekeeping duties Patient care and patient flow Complies with hospital practice standards regarding competent performance duties Maintains patient confidentiality Creates a safe environment in which surgery may take place Uses medical equipment in a safe manner Helps provide cost effective patient care Implements principles of medical and surgical asepsis in accordance with recognized national standards and hospital specific policies and procedures Provides physical safety for the patient Accounts for sponges, needles, instruments, and other potential foreign bodies Supports other hospital personnel in the performance of their duties Assists surgeon in scrubbed cases Pulls supplies for upcoming cases Demonstrates cooperative work attitude towards and with coworkers, employees, management, patients, visitors and physicians Maintains a safe work environment in compliance with OSHA guidelines and infection control standards Demonstrates knowledge of Instrument Processing from decontamination to storage of sterile packages Checks room for cleanliness, availability of supplies and equipment for all assigned cases at the beginning of each day Utilizes surgeon preference card to select packs, supplies and instruments Performs surgical hand scrub and dons sterile gown and gloves according to gowning and gloving policy Maintains proper sterile technique when gowning and gloving surgeon and draping patient Performs sponge, instrument, and needle counts according to count policy Handles specimen per established policy Transports instruments to decontamination area utilizing appropriate technique and in compliance with established policies and procedures Puts unused sterile supplies and instruments away at the end of the day Restocks operating rooms to established PAR levels Adheres to attendance, punctuality, meal and break time period policies Completes work in an acceptable time frame and in an independent manner Carries out assigned duties in an effective, productive, and efficient manner Demonstrates a positive “can do” attitude Willingness to adjust personal schedule periodically as workload fluctuates and as department needs require Attends 100% of department meetings or documents review of materials presented Functions as a team member following the rules of engagement of the department and hospital Communicates information about customers or other employees only as necessary to conduct hospital related business Adheres to strictest confidentiality in dealing with patients, families, hospital personnel, and the public Keeps supervisor apprised of work progress Has a proactive attitude about problem resolution Anticipates customers’ needs and provides for them as quickly as possible Models core values to co-workers continuously Follows hospital and departmental safety policies and procedures Reports unsafe situations to supervisor Adheres to hospital and departmental dress code Wears name badge at all times Demonstrates knowledge of hospital wide emergency management codes and plans Demonstrates knowledge of and participation in hospital performance improvement program, infection control program and risk management program Demonstrates knowledge of cultural, spiritual, and aged related consideration when interacting/caring for patients Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Description The Nurse Manager is responsible for the management of nursing practice and operations on a designated unit/service. This includes, but is not limited to, the management of: clinical nursing practice, staff recruitment, retention, labor relations, supply chain and budget, staffing, employee performance evaluation, quality improvement, staff education, medical records, internal and external regulatory and survey requirements. The Nurse Manager collaborates with multiple professionals to support and coordinate the provision / management of patient care. He or she works closely with the Nursing Clinical Director, unit Dyad partner and staff in insuring that the Service/Unit maintains the highest standards of patient care and is responsive to the needs of the patient & family as well as the organization. Responsibilities PATIENT CARE 1. Leads nursing practice using the tenets of the Professional Practice Model of Relationship Centered Care and the Care Delivery Model of Modified Primary Nursing for the promotion of the patient experience. 2. Demonstrates proficiency in all aspects of Purposeful Hourly Rounding (PHR) and role models expected behaviors. 3. Ensures the integration of PHR into clinical activities to enhance Relationship Centered Care. 4. Validates staff members round hourly on all patients by direct observation and patient feedback. 5. Assesses staff competency in PHR and provides consistent meaningful feedback with more focused feedback as needed. 6. Conducts rounding of all patients on a daily basis (Monday-Friday.) 7. Communicates quantitative and qualitative information regarding the patient experience and staff engagement to the staff and the Interdisciplinary Patient Care Team that leads to the development and implementation of an action plan. 8. Collaborates with the physician dyad and escalates concerns as appropriate. 9. Follows up on all patient concerns in a timely manner and provides service recovery as needed. 10. Considers the patient’s values, preferences, cultural diversity, expressed needs and knowledge in all aspects of care. 7. Empowers staff to use evidence-based practices to increase understanding of patients’ perceptions of care. 8. Demonstrates caring, respect, compassion, empathy and active listening through verbal and body language and actions. QUALITY AND SAFETY 1. Designs, supports and leads a safe, therapeutic and efficient patient-centered care environment for professional practice. 2. Identifies and investigates issues or variances in practice/operations by participating in the RCA process and implements corrective action plans. 3. Fosters a fair and open culture that encourages error and near-miss occurrence reporting. 4. Leads interdisciplinary quality improvement teams using the principles of high reliability. 5. Reviews unit progress, changes, and compliance with quality and safety metrics with clinical nurses and other members of the healthcare team. 6. Responds to escalations of potential safety hazards or gaps from best practice by correcting concerns following institutional chain of command protocol. 7. Monitors institutional information technology infrastructure and corrects gaps in clinical nurse documentation. 8. Leads staff participation in quality and safety initiatives and mandated compliance measures. 9. Demonstrates accountability for all unit quality and safety practices and compliance, and ensures required evaluation of staff competencies is maintained. OPERATIONS AND ADMINISTRATION 1. Supports implementation of the mission, vision, goals and objectives of the department, throughout the clinical service and individual patient care units. 2. Provides administrative and clinical oversight to ensure that all activity (staffing, support services, inter disciplinary collaboration, resources and financial viability) supports the goals of the organization. 3. Works collaboratively with physician dyads and all members of the healthcare team to promote patient care and regulatory standards. 4. Maintains a nursing unit in compliance with all regulatory agency mandates, including the regulations of NYS DOH and The Joint Commission. 5. Oversees 24 hour patient care delivery, throughput, staffing and processes to ensure efficient and effective operations. 6. Prepares, implements and monitors unit budgets, including capital equipment allocation, budget variances, management of OT and vacancies according to MSHS financial goals. 7. Maintains control of established positions and manages the recruitment and retention of qualified staff. 8. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information. 9. Evaluates nursing staff performance and mentors, coaches, counsels and disciplines staff as needed. 10. Monitors availability and maintenance of nursing equipment and supplies. 11. Conducts regular staff meetings to ensure communication with staff about progress, changes and compliance with all hospital policies and procedures. 12. Encourages, recognizes and rewards staff participation in quality and safety initiatives, compliance and successes. 13. Facilitates organizational change initiatives by using effective strategies. 14. Leads a shared decision making model by establishing a structure of shared governance, just culture and staff engagement in practice councils, departmental meetings and initiatives. 15. Interprets and implements collective bargaining agreements affecting staff. 16. Responds to protest of assignment in a timely manner as detailed in the collective bargaining agreement and discusses the resolution in unit staff meetings. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 1. Performs as a clinical leader who actively creates and supports nursing practice and an environment of care that reflects clinical excellence. 2. Organizes the environment of care to support clinical colleagues, patients and their families and members of the healthcare team. 3. SCHEDULE: Friday, Saturday, Sunday 2:00pm-2:00am • Assesses the physical, social and psychological needs and living conditions of the patient through professional knowledge and skills of observation, interviewing and physical examination. • Travels to patients’ homes and/or other facilities with varying environments (e.g., elevated buildings, walk-ups, care facilities, single/multiple family homes, presence of pets, etc.) using approved transportation options to deliver direct care to the patient. • Implements care plan and revisions by ongoing assessment, planning, coordination, counseling, teaching and supervision. Works collaboratively and consults with appropriate multidisciplinary health team members (i.e., physician, OT, PT, SW, SLP, family members). • Transports and utilizes required medical equipment and supplies using VNS Health designated/supplied carrying case weighing approximately 25 – 30 lbs. to and from patient homes and care facilities. • Provides nursing care in accordance with Agency policies, practices, procedures and Standards of Nursing Practice. This may require standing, stooping, sitting, crouching, bending and stretching to deliver patient care. • Documents content and process of all services provided in accordance with government regulations and requirements, Agency policies, practices, and procedures. • Assists patients with activities of daily living, which may require positioning, moving, transferring and lifting patients of varying weights and physical conditions, with and without assistance and as appropriate, from family members and/or paraprofessionals. • Monitors the effect of the care plan on patient and family health status and informs physician and other team members of changes in the client's needs. • Consults with and educates the client and family regarding the disease process, self-care techniques and prevention strategies. • Appraises care provided and revises the goals and approaches to patient care, as needed. • Initiates and maintains written (including clinical and progress notes) and verbal communications with team members and management to assure optimal patient care. • Performs established work procedures in relation to Program workflow. • Understands, interprets and implements the Agency standard reimbursement policy and determines the billing source for patient care. Consults with management on complex and unique reimbursement cases. • Manages all aspects of a caseload, as assigned. • Maintains productivity sufficient to meet Agency goals. • Participates in the orientation of selected staff through ‘buddy system’ field observation of staff and feedback to appropriate staff involved in orientation process. • Participates in selected student programs by providing guidance, training and mentoring to students. • Assumes responsibility for personal professional growth through attendance at in-services, training, continued formal education and select journal readership. • Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Licenses and Certifications: License and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State required Education: Associate's Degree in Nursing with at least one year of experience as a full-time staff nurse in a medical-surgical nursing area required OR Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from a State-approved diploma program required Work Experience: Prior/current Hospice or emergent care experience required Minimum one year of experience in a medical/surgical environment preferred Pay Range USD $118,942.00 - USD $152,717.00 /Yr.
