The CICU staff includes an integrated cardiac team with all sub-specialists readily available and accessible. The unit-based staff includes a dedicated pharmacist, respiratory therapist, social worker, nurses, as well as physicians from the divisions of anesthesiology, critical care medicine, cardiology and cardiac surgery. Children’s CICU is home to an Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) center of excellence for ECMO services in children. The CICU also has VAD (Ventricular Assist Device) and heart transplant programs. The Telehealth Command Center in our CICU uses cutting-edge technology to keep continuous watch over the most fragile patients. It offers collaborative communication to help monitor, predict and prevent major events such as cardiac arrest. About The Role A Registered Nurse in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) at Children’s National Hospital provides highly specialized care for critically ill infants and children with congenital, acquired, and complex cardiovascular conditions. Working within the region’s only Level IV Pediatric ICU and specialized CICU, nurses monitor and manage patients requiring advanced therapies such as ECMO, ventricular assist devices (VADs), and heart transplantation support. They collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team of physicians, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and social workers to deliver family-centered care, utilize advanced monitoring technology, respond to emergent changes in patient condition, and support innovative treatments that improve outcomes for some of the hospital’s most medically fragile patients. All nursing practice is based on the legal scope of practice, national and specialty nursing standards, Children's National Policies and Procedures, and in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. The team works collaboratively with other departments that impact EMTC operations. ED patients are registered by Registration/Patient Access/Admission staff who report to the Director of Business Operations. The EMTC provides medical screening and emergency care to over 120,000 patients and families annually with a wide range of problems. Presenting conditions are triaged and assigned to the appropriate treatment area utilizing the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) tool, which takes into account patient acuity and resources needed for management. Presenting conditions range from mild to life-threatening. Mild to moderate conditions include common pediatric conditions such as: common colds, rashes, strep throat, upper respiratory conditions, lacerations, otitis media, strains and sprains, etc. More complex to life threatening conditions include child abuse/neglect, sexual assault, behavioral emergencies, meningitis, sepsis, burns, acute medical, surgical and trauma conditions, anaphylaxis, respiratory and cardiac arrest. The EMTC can provide emergency stabilization and treatment of adults and arrange for transfer to the appropriate treatment site after medical screening and initial interventions. Certified Medication Technician Job Description Job Summary Performs nurse aide duties that provide for the physical and emotional needs of the assigned patients. Essential Functions Adheres to RAH policies and Maryland Nurse Practice Act. Performs work under the supervision of the Supervising Nurse/Delegating Nurse. Performs nurse aides duties, not limited to: personal care of the patient (bathing, d ressing, or hygiene, toileting activities and feeding), transferring and ambulation activities, range of motion exercises, vital signs (temperature, pulse rate, respiration rate, and blood pressure), and post mortem care. Receives direction from licensed nurses in planning and carrying out nursing aide care. Observes and reports to the licensed nurse the physical and psychological conditi on of the patient including any changes. Reports safety hazards and unusual incidents involving patients, visitors or self to the Supervising Nurse and to the o ffice. Performs the following, provided that he/she has been trained, demonstrated competency and it is within the RAH policy and state law; colostomy care, wound care, catheter care and medication administration. The Certified Medication tech will NOT perform any of the following: taking or transcribing physician orders activities outside the Scope of Practice for CMT as outlined in the State Practice Act. Education, Experience, Knowledge, Ski lls, Abilities and Availability Graduate of a state approved Certified Medication Technician course. Six months experience within the past 2 years as a Certified Medication Technician. Currently certified in the state as a Certified Medication Tech. Passing score on RAH’s CMT Competency exam. Meets the health requirements for employees providing direct patient care. Read, write, speak, and understand English as needed for the job. Have valid driver’s license and use of an insured automobile for work or access to adequate transportation. Annual tuberculin skin test or x-ray and periodic health statement signed by a licensed health examiner and any other health tests or immunizations required by facility.
