As an Operating Room Nurse, you will be responsible for providing nursing care that is goal-directed and adapted to the needs of an individual, a family and/or community during health and illness. In this role, the Operating Room Nurse will provide nursing care based on knowledge, skills and standards of practice which provide a foundation that allows the nurse to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the nursing care being provided. Each professional nurse assumes primary responsibility and accountability for all nursing care provided by him/her and those directly under their supervision. The nurse is part of the multi-disciplinary team which works collaboratively in providing care to patients. Essential Job Functions Utilizes assessment skills to determine patient needs in order to provide comprehensive patient/family care for patients from neonate to geriatric population Identifies learning needs of patients and their family which directly influence patient recovery and develops teaching methods to enhance learning Implements nursing actions based on scheduled surgery, patient assessment, patient developmental needs and incorporates actions into written plan of care Evaluates care given and allows for alterations in nursing interventions to meet the changing needs or conditions of the patient. Documents appropriately in patient care records Successfully completes unit based and hospital competencies as designated competently performs nursing treatments and procedures according to hospital policy and nursing practice within clinical specialty as documented by the respective clinical rotational checklists Maintains current CPR certification Prepares and administers medication/treatment according to the physician's orders utilizing knowledge base to assure patient safety. Works collaboratively with other health team members in providing a holistic approach to health care. We offer advanced surgical solutions to treat atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valve disease and many other heart conditions. From reconstructing failing hearts to performing robotic and minimally invasive cardiac surgery, our surgeons are helping patients with heart disease return to active, full lives. At the core of our heart surgery program is a team of internationally known cardiac surgeons who are leaders in the field and are often among the first to perform groundbreaking procedures. The University of Chicago Cardiac Surgery department is a robust program for heart transplantation, mechanical circulatory support including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), durable Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD), bloodless surgeries and other high-risk cases. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area. As an Advanced Practice Provider , you will be responsible for comprehensive direct patient care management and OR surgical assist. In this role, the APP will manage a caseload of patients and exercise autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis and initiation of delegated medical treatments. The scope of practice includes operating room support, consultation, patient management, discharge planning, staff education, consultation and research. The APP will utilize advance practice skills obtained through the completion of a formal provider program. The Margaret M. and George A. Stephen Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Comer Children’s Hospital provides Level IV NICU care, which is the highest level of newborn care according to the American Academy of Pediatrics’ standards. Comer Children’s is one of only a few children’s hospitals in Illinois that provides Level IV NICU care just steps away from our birth center . Our pediatric surgical subspecialists on staff can perform advanced surgical procedures when needed. We also offer extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a type of life support for infants with heart or lung problems.
