JOB DESCRIPTION Distinguishing Characteristics Medical Assistant: Non-supervisory; performs clinical and/or laboratory duties at least 50% of the time in accordance with prescribed procedures. Duties of the position may vary when assigned to an inpatient versus outpatient care area of the hospital. Illustrative Duties Medical Assistants function under the direct supervision and guidance of nursing personnel, physicians, and other medical and laboratory personnel in the performance of assigned duties. The Supervisor: Oversees and instructs on unusual or special procedures and techniques Spot-checks work and provides overall direction, control, and guidance Reviews and investigates abnormal findings or conditions Medical Assistants: Must share pertinent patient care information with physicians and nursing personnel Are expected to obtain assistance during emergencies and may assist in gathering necessary equipment Clinical and Laboratory Activities Acclimatizes patient and family to unit; provides general information regarding room, unit, and hospital Obtains, records, and exchanges information on behalf of or with patient Prepares patient for exam or laboratory test Answers routine questions and assists physician during examinations (including chaperoning) Records reason for visit, recent problems, and other required info Reviews relevant information with patient and distributes informational packets Obtains and records weight, height, blood pressure, vital signs Performs routine lab techniques (e.g., dipstick urine, fingerstick glucose, vision testing) Provides basic patient care (e.g., ambulation, ROM, hygiene, comfort, hydration, toileting) Escorts/transports patients Processes patient/lab/medical orders; schedules follow-ups; performs non-sterile dressing changes Operates laboratory equipment (e.g., centrifuges) and records results Centrifuges specimens, subdivides and identifies those for external labs Cleans and sterilizes instruments, disposes of contaminated supplies per protocol Draws blood, obtains EKGs, documents and reports glucose results; performs glucometer quality checks Performs phlebotomy (adult and pediatric), handles specimens safely, labels properly, resolves labeling/test order issues Serves as patient safety companion; monitors patients on suicide watch; documents behavior and safety responses Summons emergency assistance and gathers required equipment Clerical Activities Greets and directs visitors; answers routine questions Processes incoming/outgoing mail and prepares routine correspondence Answers phones, screens/routs calls, and takes messages; escalates as needed During phone triage, determines severity of condition and directs accordingly; records info per protocol Responds to inquiries from medical staff regarding patient/test info Answers routine patient questions about scheduling, billing, and testing Prepares daily scheduling reports; transcribes/processes orders; routes correspondence Performs patient reception, schedules appointments and testing, provides visit instructions, handles changes Accessions lab tests and inputs info using CAIS or Laboratory Info System; generates barcodes Processes specimens (labeling, data entry, preparation for transport) Registers and/or enters patient information (demographics, charges) Checks insurance eligibility, obtains approvals, collects co-pays, issues receipts Reviews and enters patient charges based on CPT codes Maintains supplies; conducts inventory; reorders using manual or automated systems Maintains and updates charts and logs; ensures records are accurate and complete Identifies and contacts resources for maintenance; arranges for work orders Communication Medical Assistants: Frequently communicate orally with patients and families to obtain, provide, or elicit information Have daily contact with physicians and medical/lab personnel during routine duties Regularly consult with professional staff about procedures and processes Are expected to immediately notify physicians/nursing staff in emergency situations QUALIFICATIONS Open Competitive: One year of experience performing clinical and clerical support activities in a health care setting, or completion of a medical assistant program. 
Job Summary In the ICU of a hospital, patients are often in critical condition and need constant monitoring and care. ICU nurses review data from special equipment to track a patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and other vitals. They also carry out more traditional nursing duties such as administering medications and communicating with patients regarding their condition. Incumbents at this level receive in-service training in a limited number of care procedures, leading to eligibility to qualify for appointment to Nursing Assistant 2. Nursing Assistant 2: full performance level; using detailed guidelines, standards, and procedures, and under the supervision of clinicians, observes patients and performs prescribed simple treatment procedures; attends to personal hygiene needs of patients; and performs limited cleaning and housekeeping duties directly related to patient care. Gives therapeutic baths such as sitz and fever sponge baths. Measures and records height and weight. Inspects functioning oxygen therapy equipment including tents, masks, and cannulae to ensure appropriate functioning. Operates a variety of specialized patient monitoring and treatment devices. Examples include bathing and dressing patients, brushing teeth, and trimming nails. Collects and carries patients’ laundry and dry cleaning and delivers objects to appropriate locations in the health care facility. Receives patients’ belongings and transports objects to safe storage, keeping appropriate records. Feeds patients requiring assistance. As directed by clinical staff, moves, positions, lifts and transports patients using a variety of lifts and other aids in order to make patients comfortable, prepare patients for treatment, deliver patients to treatment areas, and to prevent contractures. Brings bedpans and urinals to patients requiring assistance and attends to incontinent patients. Talks and listens to patients and responds by encouraging patients to cooperate and participate in treatment activities. May transport patients and supplies on occasion. May perform a variety of limited housekeeping and cleaning duties related to direct patient care in order to ensure that treatment and patient areas are clean, sanitary, orderly, and properly supplied. Nursing Assistant 2 Under direction of higher-level treatment staff, performs duties similar to those of a Nursing Assistant 1, but with greater proficiency. Positions may assist with training new staff in assigned treatment areas. Nursing Assistant (Certified) Under direction of higher-level treatment staff, performs duties similar to those of a Nursing Assistant 2, but also participates in required quarterly in-service education to maintain certification and meet all necessary requirements to be re-certified every two years. Communication Nursing Assistants have frequent face-to-face communication with patients and visitors for the purposes of conveying treatment procedure and visitor information. Incumbents attempt to encourage and support patients who may be despondent or apprehensive, and regularly communicate with clinical staff to convey information on patients’ physical conditions and responses to treatment. This information includes items such as observable physical behavioral changes, fatigue levels, and general behaviors and responses to routine treatments, such as foot soaks. Illustrative Duties Graduate Nurse (T&RC) Prepares or assists with preparation of nursing care plans consistent with individuals’ comprehensive treatment plans and medical needs. Carries out treatment procedures, administers medications, and monitors individuals’ conditions. Records notes and maintains individuals’ medical records and nursing care plans, including nursing care, medications, and treatments, reactions to care and treatment, intake and output of liquids and solids, and vital signs. Participates in the development, implementation, and revision of individual care plans as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team. Modifies nursing care plans based on individual condition and responses to care and treatment. Triages individuals by inquiring about illnesses, injuries, and symptoms, and records findings and observations. Provides education and counseling to individuals and families regarding health, medications, procedures, and treatment goals. Registered Nurse 1 (T&RC) Independently performs the duties described above and provides clinical supervision and instruction to Graduate Nurses (T&RC), Teaching & Research Center Licensed Practical Nurses, and direct care staff in completing care tasks. Delegates responsibility for appropriate nursing activities, skills, and/or procedures to nursing and direct care staff; and makes clinical rounds to assess individuals’ nursing care needs and observe and evaluate the provision of nursing services. May perform the full range of supervisory duties over Graduate Nurses (T&RC), Teaching & Research Center Licensed Practical Nurses, and direct care staff; provide information to Registered Nurse Supervisors 1 (T&RC); and prepare or contribute to the preparation of reports and performance evaluations for lower-level staff involved in nursing care activities. Registered Nurse 2 (T&RC) Positions perform duties in each of the three functional areas described below. Direct Individual Care: Provides nursing care to individuals in an acute care environment requiring complex nursing skills; uses advanced knowledge and skill in nursing assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation activities. Observes and responds to individual emergency situations, and sets priorities for care based on individual acuity, preferences, and the possibility of effective intervention. Implements nursing interventions in response to changes in individual status and unusual circumstances. Interprets assessment data to determine if individuals are at physiological or psychosocial risk. Takes steps to decrease stress and increase the effectiveness of individual coping mechanisms; uses effective communication strategies with individuals, families, staff, and the general public. Assesses individual status upon entry to the hospital and throughout hospitalization. Identifies implications of individuals’ statuses and prioritizes data collection based on individuals’ immediate needs. Identifies safety and security risks to promote a culture of safety and to prevent injury and harm to individuals, visitors, and staff. Preceptor: Guides lower-level, and new to specialty, registered nurses in choosing nursing interventions, developing skills, and applying knowledge. Serves as a resource nurse for staff members, orienting new staff and providing feedback on nursing skills for specialty care areas. Develops and maintains care standards knowledge bases for specialty care areas and develops care guidelines for unit-specific individual populations. Maintains a minimum standard of continuing education for specialty areas. Evaluates and assesses individual staff and nursing student development needs. Counsels and implements a variety of teaching strategies to meet those needs in consultation with nursing management staff. Participates in in-service and other educational programs related to clinical specialties. May identify, develop, and implement nursing research studies on clinical units, in consultation with medical staff consultants. Clinical Management: Consults and coordinates with other health care team members to resolve complex clinical issues and develop short and long-term clinical goals for assigned units. Integrates and evaluates clinical care knowledge specific to the needs of unit individuals; develops unit-specific policies and procedures in consultation with nursing management staff. Identifies and implements corrective actions to improve the quality of individual care; may oversee equipment testing and supplies. Leads and attends various hospital committees. Assists Registered Nurse Supervisor 1 (T&RC) staff with implementing and achieving unit operating changes; may take charge of a unit in the absence of a Registered Nurse Supervisor 1 (T&RC). Resolves individual relation issues. Identifies and reports issues related to individual care, operation, and quality outcomes. Identifies potential conflict situations and facilitates solutions. Registered Nurse Supervisor 1 (T&RC) Plans, directs, and supervises nursing services on an assigned unit, including direct supervision of Registered Nurse 1 (T&RC) and other staff. Directs the development and implementation of nursing care plans on a unit. Provides individual care, and functions as an educator and nursing services expert. Assesses work methods of nursing staff and provides feedback to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of care delivered. Coordinates medical and nursing care needs with other health care providers and departments. Ensures proper functioning of equipment and unit compliance with safety and environmental standards. Monitors nursing care quality standards, and implements corrective actions as needed. Attends and participates in medical committees to represent nursing staff needs and the individual population, and participates in writing of care standards. Identifies staff training needs and collaborates with unit educators to develop and implement educational programs. Develops and implements orientation plans for new employees and participates in staffing decisions.
