Purpose Statement/Position Summary The Registered Nurse, under general supervision, conducts patient assessments, participates in the development of the plan of care, implements and evaluates care according to patient specific age and/or developmental needs. Under physician supervision, PAs provide care in areas within KP in primary care or specialty departments consistent with their educational preparation following the Regional Practice Guidelines and Protocols for Ambulatory and Hospital-Based Practice. They perform complete physical examinations, including ordering, interpreting and evaluating diagnostic tests and examinations. Assume on-going responsibility for each patient from discovery of the disorder to recovery. Diagnose and treat both chronic and episodic disorders including complications of otherwise normal processes. Establish and document the health care plan and diagnosis, maintain records of each case that are sufficiently complete for any physician reviewing them to evaluate the effectiveness of the plan.Consistently demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities and behaviors necessary to provide superior and culturally sensitive service to each other, to our members and to customers, contracted providers and vendors. Functions in an expanded role to regularly provide primary, acute or emergency care to patients with complicated medical or surgical conditions which requires an intensive level of care and advanced certification in a specialty area (e.g., neonatal, intensive care, emergency medicine, operating room, etc.). A formal internship and/or equivalent on-the-job training in the specialty area are also required. Essential Responsibilities: Collect subjective data (obtain history). Assess patient’s preoperative and postoperative status at intervals according to facility or health care organization policies and procedures to include the patient’s cardiovascular system, respiratory system and airway management needs, neurological system, hemodynamic stability, pain and comfort needs, and mental status. Interpret information accurately from various noninvasive and invasive monitors. Describe the underlying pathophysiology of commonly encountered disease processes. Describe the physiology associated with various anesthesia techniques and surgical or procedural interventions. Apply the relevant scoring system/discharge criteria for patient transfer ( e.g. , Aldrete Score, Modified Aldrete Score [ i.e. , PARSAP], Post Anesthesia Discharge Scoring System [PADSS], White) score accurately as defined by organizational policy. Develop an individualized perianesthesia plan of care. Implement the plan of care including the following interventions: Preparing for and managing patient recovery from anesthesia – general. P erforming interventions to ensure the patient is at or returned to normothermia at the conclusion of the immediate postoperative period. P erforming interventions to protect patient from infection. M anaging patient’s other co-morbid conditions as applicable. M anaging patient’s fluid as prescribed. A ssessing knowledge level of patient or designated support person and providing education regarding the expected psychosocial response, nutritional management, medication management, pain and comfort management, wound management, and expected responses to the operative or invasive procedure; I nvolving patient or designated support person actively in decisions affecting his or her perioperative plan of care and the rehabilitation process. P rotecting patient’s rights, dignity, and privacy. P roviding age-specific, culturally competent, ethical care within legal standards of practice; and P roviding consistent and comparable care regardless of the setting.
