Overview JOB SUMMARY: The Certified Nurse Assistant, reporting to the Nursing Unit Director, with assignment and direction from the Registered Nurse &/or LVN. This position is directly responsible for the delivery of high quality individualized basic nursing care. The Nursing Assistant supports the hospital mission and vision. The Nurse Assistant utilizes knowledge of patient’s age, developmental status, spiritual and cultural diversity into the provision of patient care. The position contributes to the provision of safety and quality nursing care that results in positive outcomes in patient care. Responsibilities Sets priorities according to patient care needs.Takes vital signs (temperature, pulse, blood pressure, pain) and reports changes fromestablished baselines.Recognizes the signs and symptoms of potential emergencies, notifies appropriates nursingpersonnel and initiates appropriate actions within scope of practice.Knowledge of care of patient with tubes: NG, Gastrostomy, wound draining, O2, IV, chest tube;Systems(JP & Hemovac)Observes and reports patient's skin for redness/decubitus. Oral hygiene toinclude denture care; bath to include back and peri care.Assists patients in dressing, activity of daily living such as shaving, make-up, and clothing.Assists patient to the bathroom as needed, and assist patients with bedpan or urinal placementand removal. Patient privacy is observed and patient is left neat and comfortable.Follows hospital Fall Prevention Protocol to ensure patient’s safety. Administers routine catheter care. Empties, measures and documents urine output. RemovesFoley catheters as ordered.Consistently follows universal precautions in handling of patient body fluids. Consistentlydemonstrates proper use of hand washing after and before each patient contact.In consultation with the RN, contributes to the plan of care based on interaction with patientand/or family.Reports to the RN observed patient response to interventions, treatments, medications, andprocedures.Gives accurate, objective, and important information/report to oncoming shift nurse assistant forthe continuing care.Follows Hand-off communication: Informs Charge nurse when is off-unit; follows rest (break)and meal (lunch) schedule: informs Charge nurse immediately when able to be on time for mealperiod. Informs Charge nurse immediately if a missed rest or/and meal period occurs.Participates in teaching and/or orientating of new personnel.Participates in continuing education in areas that are directly related to the assigned area asevidenced by written documentation.Operates equipment and performs job related duties in a safe manner.Demonstrates accountability by attending staff meetings, in-services and continuing educationopportunities.Completes annual requirement (self-study module, TB Screen) in a timely manner. Provides general nursing care such as positioning the patient, lifting, turning, applying/utilizing special equipment, assisting in the use of bed pan, urinal or commode, ambulating the patient, pre operative and post operative care, and application of binder or anti embolic stockings, bed bath, oral/hair/back care, changing bed linens, cleaning over bed table, and bedside stand, straightening patient room and other general care necessary during the shift. Takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, height, blood pressure, and intake and output measurements accurately. Documents in a timely manner. Prepares patient room and bed for admission and transfers and ensures all necessary equipment is in room. Maintains an attractive and comfortable environment for patients with special consideration to cleanliness of room, ventilation, and lighting. Assists in patient admission, transfer, and discharge procedures. Assist with handling and care of patient belongings and other personal property. Answers patient call lights, telephone, and paging system and responds as appropriate. Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, performs routine treatment procedures such as enemas, application of appliances for heat and cold. Able to release, remove, and reapply restraints to patient under the direction of an RN. Ensures patient is in proper position and alignment. Assist Registered Nurse and/or LVN/LPN with complicated patient treatment procedures. Serves and removes patient meal tray in timely manner. Assists with feeding and/or preparing items such as opening milk container, cutting food for patient. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations Must read, write and speak fluent English. Must have good and regular attendance. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills Basic computer knowledge. Able to organize tasks, develop action plans, set priorities and function under stressful situations. Schedule: 7PM-7AM | 12 hours | 30 hours weekly Purpose Statement/Position Summary The Registered Nurse in the NICCU conducts patient assessments, participates in the development of the plan of care, implements and evaluates care according to patient specific age and/or developmental needs. Collaborates with other health care team members in the delivery of care. Employee will follow applicable policies and procedures in handling supplies, pharmaceuticals, and equipment. Newborn and Infant Critical Care Unit (NICCU): A 58-bed Level IV unit that serves as a national and international referral center, dedicated to the care of critically ill newborns and infants with complex medical and surgical diagnoses. Our team manages a diverse patient population ranging from 22-week micro-preemies to infants beyond their first year of life. The unit's specialized therapies include Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), Cardio-Renal Pediatric Dialysis Emergency Machine (CARPEDIEM), Neuro Critical Care with Whole Body Cooling (Therapeutic Hypothermia), and Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD) with a specialized Home Ventilator Program, while also providing some of the most highly specialized neonatal and infant surgical services available. These advanced therapies and services create a unique environment for cutting-edge care, learning, and professional growth. Minimum Qualifications/Work Experience 1+ year experience as an RN. Pediatric experience preferred. Broad knowledge of patient care principles and equipment; CHLA patient care policies and procedures. Ability to assess effectiveness of patient care; maintain a calm demeanor and assist in crises and emergencies; prioritize tasks for complex patient care; communicate tactfully, professionally, and effectively, verbally and in writing. Education/Licensure/Certification BSN preferred. Associates Degree in Nursing. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of California.
