Surgical Technologists, sometimes called “scrub techs”, assist in surgical procedures under the supervision of surgeons and registered nurses and ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintaining a sterile field. Surgical Technologists perform a variety of functions, such as checking supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables, performing appropriate counts, draping the sterile field, passing instruments to the surgeon and assistant during the procedure, prepare sterile dressing and clean instruments for terminal sterilization. A caregiver in this position works from 11:00 a.m. – 11:30 p.m. with on-call requirements. The start/end time may vary based on the needs of the department. A caregiver who excels in this role will: Assist surgeons in the scrub capacity. Scrub, gown and glove caregivers. Set up tables with instruments and supplies. Anticipate the needs of the surgeon, including instruments, sutures, sponges and supplies. Assist in preparing and draping patients and operative areas. Understand and maintain aseptic technique. Count instruments, sponges and needles with a circulating RN and report correctness and discrepancies. Assist in applying dressings and casts. Assemble all instruments and equipment for decontamination. Assist with maintaining equipment, routine terminal cleaning, housekeeping duties, room inventory and stocking supplies. Assist the surgical team as a circulator under the direction of an RN. Assist in transporting patients and preoperative preparation. Assume call responsibility. Transitional team duties: remove trash from OR, wash out trash cans, wash tables and furniture, move tables and furniture, wipe all flat surfaces, spot clean walls, clean floors, clean and stock anesthesia equipment and clean, disinfect, sterilize, test, replace and keeps adequate inventory of reusable anesthesia equipment, cardiac monitors and cables, blood pressure equipment, stethoscopes and blood infusers. Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: Successful completion of a Surgical Technology program accredited through CCAAHEP or ABHES OR completion of a military surgical technology program OR state license as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Certification as a Surgical Technologist TS-C (Tech in Surgery - Certified - National Center for Competency Training) or CST (Certified Surgical Technologist - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting). Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: Surgical Technologist certification from candidates who have completed an accredited Surgical Technology program Physical Requirements: Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking. Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
