Nurse Practitioner - Complex Care Services Department Summary Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) to function in the inpatient Complex Care Service (CCS) at Boston Children’s Hospital. CCS is a long-standing and nationally regarded inpatient service in Pediatric Hospital Medicine within the Division of General Pediatrics that serves hospitalized children with medical complexity, who have complex chronic conditions and functional limitations. Common reasons for admission to CCS include infections (aspiration pneumonia, pyelonephritis), chronic condition exacerbations (epilepsy, digestive dysmotility), and post-operative recovery following surgery (baclofen pump placement, gastrostomy, spinal fusion, etc.). This role will provide patient evaluation, assessment, and facilitate care for the patients on the CCS service and will implement interventions tailored to improve systems for patient care and enhance patient safety for this population. The CCS APRN will work collaboratively with supervising physicians, pediatric trainees (residents and fellows), and the entire nursing team to promote optimal clinical care. This APRN will act as a clinical resource, facilitating staff educational opportunities. The setting is fast-paced and collaborative with many opportunities for learning. Position Summary/ Department Summary: The Colorectal and Pelvic Malformation Center at Boston Children’s specializes in caring for infants, children and adolescents with routine to complex colorectal and pelvic conditions. Our team of pediatric experts from surgery, gastroenterology, urology, and gynecology work together to provide comprehensive and personalized treatment plans for patients and families. The Nurse Practitioner will have clinical, administrative and programmatic responsibilities. The management of some of these patients may involve multidisciplinary care, cross training will be provided in colorectal/pediatric surgery, urology, gynecology and gastroenterology. Key Responsibilities: Working with the multidisciplinary team to integrate inpatient and outpatient care, implement interventions and support administrative and nursing staff as a clinical resource. Assessing and triaging new patients, assisting with obtaining histories and records, ordering appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic interventions to streamline and coordinate the intake process. Assessing patients’ postoperative progress, as well as work with the bowel management program in initial and follow-up appointments. Coordinating care for patients across the continuum from intake to scheduling admissions for surgery and hospital, as well as testing and subsequent follow-ups as necessary. Participating in leading patient clinical discussions during intake meetings, draft case summary for physician review, and prepare multidisciplinary recommendations for referring physicians and families.
