Job Description 01: Develops an action plan and coordinates new employee orientation in conjunction with the Nursing Education department. Develops mechanisms for documentation of initial competencies achieved and sets individualized time frames for accomplishment. Provides orientation goals and strategies to orientee and preceptor. Acts as a resource in providing theory and supervised practice during training and orientation of all new staff. Utilizes adult learning theories to implement action plan strategies. Participates in the assessment of permanent and temporary employees. Develops and facilitates clinical orientation of all new hires with the development of goals and resolution of performance problems with collaboration from service line coordinators when applicable. Mentors and monitors progress of new employees in theory and supervised practice in response to selected development needs. 02: Provides ongoing development/continuing education. Collaborates with manager, ANM, peers, and coordinators to establish initial and ongoing developmental mandatories and competencies. Assists with problem solving and development of action plans to meet developmental objectives. Facilitates attainment of objectives for all new hires and current staff. Develops and implements educational programs to reflect the unique needs of the nursing division and other departments as needed. Initiates evidence-based programs for the development of clinical skills and ensure strategies are in accordance with clinical practice standards. Integral participant along with management and staff in the selection, and/or implementation of new products, policies, procedures and /or issues related to professional associations and regulatory agencies. Responsible for the coordination and implementation of education for the above. 03: Completes 3-month probationary evaluations in an appropriate time frame. Ability to recognize and facilitate the extension of probation if needed. Placement of new employee into appropriate cluster/service line upon completion of orientation by using appropriate AHS electronic tools. Establishes evaluation time frames, implements and adheres to the process. Conducts a minimum of weekly clinical conferences with preceptor and orientees. Counsels orientees/staff as needed. Provides remedial education as needed. 04: Performs within the framework of established hospital and nursing division policies and procedures. Participates in special projects as requested by Managers or Nursing Division. Assists in research, recommendation, implementation, evaluation, and maintenance of mandatory policies and requirement of organizations of regulation and accreditation (DOH, TJC). Utilizes NJSNA guidelines for major program development and maintains records accordingly. Participates in committees, subcommittees, task forces. Acts as a resource to hospital committees, giving input regarding identified problems and practice issues, developmental and problem-solving strategies. 05: Recognizes performance strengths and deficiencies. Accepts suggestions for personal or professional development in a positive manner. Maintains individual professional competence. Establishes developmental goals and strategies incorporating feedback from colleagues and managers. Attends educational programs based on individual and departmental priorities and self-development goals. Participates in professional activities and organizations. Participates in patient care activities as needed to maintain competence. Pursues or maintains specialty certification. Submits a list of yearly personal goals and works to accomplish within the year. 06: Develop and implement internship and other special programs. Assists With interviewing and screening of applicants for perioperative roles. Develops yearend report on education programs for surgical services. Develops short-range and long-range educational goals for Intra-operative services departments. Provides regular updates on status of special projects. Evaluates program/presentation effectiveness using relevant methods. Plans program evaluation based on program objectives. Implements evaluative process and analyzes findings. Plans and implements relevant follow-up activities 07: Maintains records according to established policies. Develops/approves program objectives, content and evaluation methods for nursing education programs Verifies completion of self-learning activities Provides data for computerized records 08: Provides consultation and education for medical staff, and other allied professionals. Coordinates clinical assignments and serves as liaison between faculty and manager of clinical site to maintain a mutually satisfactory association with affiliated schools of nursing. Knowledge of clinical EMR and resource for clinical content contained within the EMR and supplement documentation. Understands and properly utilizes AHS education software program. Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Power Point, and word. Working knowledge of Excel. Other tasks which may be required: Assignments that meet the needs of the department. Required QUALIFICATIONS Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program. BSN Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse. Minimum of 3 years nursing clinical practice. 1-2 years of endoscopy experience. BLS, ACLS, PALS Preferred Certifications: CGRN

Job Description Distinguishing Characteristics All positions are in the non-competitive jurisdictional class. Nursing Assistant 1: entry level; performs basic patient care duties under direction of a nurse, physician, or other clinician; may assist Nursing Assistants 2, physicians, and nurses in the performance of care functions. Incumbents at this level receive in-service training in a limited number of care procedures, leading to eligibility to qualify for appointment to Nursing Assistant 2. Nursing Assistant 2: full performance level; using detailed guidelines, standards, and procedures, and under the supervision of clinicians, observes patients and performs prescribed simple treatment procedures; attends to personal hygiene needs of patients; and performs limited cleaning and housekeeping duties directly related to patient care. Treatment tasks performed require only knowledge of a limited number of specific treatment procedures performed at the facility. Nursing Assistant (Certified): full performance level; performs duties similar to a Nursing Assistant 2, but functions are performed in a long-term care facility and require certification as a New York State Certified Nursing Assistant. Related Classes Rehabilitation Hospital Nursing Assistants perform similar functions to those of Nursing Assistants but are focused on rehabilitation activities and are only classified at DOH’s Helen Hayes Hospital. Illustrative Duties Nursing Assistant 1 Under Direct Clinical Supervision, Performs The Following Duties Changes simple dressings as directed, gives enemas, douches, and irrigations as directed. Applies abdominal “T” binders, hot water bottles, aqua “K” pads, ice bags, and coolers, and hot and cold compresses to patients as directed. Assists patients in collecting urine and stool specimens. Observes and records patients’ quantitative food and fluid intake and waste output. Takes temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure and respiration rate. Gives therapeutic baths such as sitz and fever sponge baths. Measures and records height and weight. Inspects functioning oxygen therapy equipment including tents, masks, and cannulae to ensure appropriate functioning. Recognizes and reports abnormal signs and symptoms of common diseases and conditions to clinical staff. Applies splints, braces, slings and other self-help devices. Operates a variety of specialized patient monitoring and treatment devices. Attends to patients’ hygiene and daily living needs in order to maintain an atmosphere conducive to patient comfort and treatment. Examples include bathing and dressing patients, brushing teeth, and trimming nails. Collects and carries patients’ laundry and dry cleaning and delivers objects to appropriate locations in the health care facility. Receives patients’ belongings and transports objects to safe storage, keeping appropriate records. Feeds patients requiring assistance. As directed by clinical staff, moves, positions, lifts and transports patients using a variety of lifts and other aids in order to make patients comfortable, prepare patients for treatment, deliver patients to treatment areas, and to prevent contractures. Brings bedpans and urinals to patients requiring assistance and attends to incontinent patients. Talks and listens to patients and responds by encouraging patients to cooperate and participate in treatment activities. May transport patients and supplies on occasion. May perform a variety of limited housekeeping and cleaning duties related to direct patient care in order to ensure that treatment and patient areas are clean, sanitary, orderly, and properly supplied. Nursing Assistant 2 Under direction of higher-level treatment staff, performs duties similar to those of a Nursing Assistant 1, but with greater proficiency. Positions may assist with training new staff in assigned treatment areas. Nursing Assistant (Certified) Under direction of higher-level treatment staff, performs duties similar to those of a Nursing Assistant 2, but also participates in required quarterly in-service education to maintain certification and meet all necessary requirements to be re-certified every two years. Communication Nursing Assistants have frequent face-to-face communication with patients and visitors for the purposes of conveying treatment procedure and visitor information. Incumbents attempt to encourage and support patients who may be despondent or apprehensive, and regularly communicate with clinical staff to convey information on patients’ physical conditions and responses to treatment. This information includes items such as observable physical behavioral changes, fatigue levels, and general behaviors and responses to routine treatments, such as foot soaks. Qualifications Nursing Assistant 1 Non-Competitive: possession of or ability to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities during the probationary period. Nursing Assistant 2 Non-Competitive: one year of satisfactory full-time experience in the provision of simple treatment and other patient care services under professional supervision. Possession of current certification as a New York State Certified Nursing Assistant may substitute for the required experience. Description The (Per Diem) Clinical Nurse is a Registered Professional Nurse who provides safe, competent quality care based on nursing theory and research to a designated group of patients and significant others. Responsibilities Patient Care Delivers patient care by incorporating the tenets of the professional practice model of Relationship Centered Care and through the application of the nursing process based upon theory, research, evidence-based practice, and approved organizational nursing standards. Assesses and evaluates patient care needs and applies critical thinking skills in patient care management. Integrates relevant assessment and intervention skills in the delivery of nursing care. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary healthcare team in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the plan of care. Prioritizes all aspects of patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, and planning after hospital care and delegating to others as appropriate. Educates patients and caregivers while anticipating needs and readiness to learn, about their plan of care, transition of care, promotion of health, and prevention of disease. Communicates effectively and professionally with patients, family and all members of the Interdisciplinary Patient Care Team.
