About this Job: General Summary of Position The Medical Assistant performs clinical and administrative duties in an ambulatory care setting under the supervision of a physician/provider and/or a registered nurse. Duties may include venipuncture medication and vaccine administration measurement and documentation of vital signs and assisting providers with patient exams and telephone and clerical support. Position may float to other sites/locations within the system. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality and safety standards. Assists providers with patient preparation for examination minor office procedures and with the examination and education of patients. Collects and processes specimens completes requisitions and documents in logbook or other applicable forms/records. Provides escort for patients and assists with patient discharge activities. Provides chaperoning for patients per policy. Fulfills infection prevention and environmental responsibilities as assigned which many include: Light cleaning during clinic hours and cleaning of equipment. Updates appropriate records of scheduled equipment maintenance and manages drug and medical supply inventories. Provides telephone screening services to gather information from patients determine appropriate disposition and document per established telephone screening protocols. Under onsite provider supervision may insert intravenous catheter for physician initiated IV fluid therapy or administration of intravenous medications. Under direct onsite physician supervision may insert remove and monitor urinary catheter for procedures and prepare and administer oral drugs and injections limited to intradermal subcutaneous and intramuscular. May perform phlebotomy. Utilizes the EMR to propose patient medication refills for provider approval. Completes requisitions for tests (if applicable). Contacts insurance companies for Pre-authorizations for patient medications and specialty referrals including insurance authorization. Floats to other sites/locations within the system as appropriate and performs all duties at multiple sites. Attends scheduled meetings including but not limited to regular staff meetings and training classes for safety infection control OSHA CLIA BLS and others as required. What You'll Do Perform rapid, comprehensive assessments and develop individualized plans of care for ED patients presenting with a wide range of emergent and urgent conditions Intervene quickly and decisively at the bedside — administering medications, initiating procedures, and adjusting care plans in response to changes in patient status Establish rapport with patients and families under high-stress conditions, providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support throughout the ED visit Document patient care, assessments, and outcomes accurately in the electronic health record; communicate irregularities and continuing care needs across nursing teams Delegate tasks appropriately to non-licensed personnel and assistants Adhere to infection control protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations Participate in unit performance improvement programs, and engage in education, engagement, and practice committees Maintain and grow clinical knowledge through educational workshops, professional publications, and professional societies Perform other duties as assigned consistent with the scope of this role Required Qualifications Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred Graduate of an accredited school of nursing Minimum three (3) years of bedside RN experience in an Emergency Department setting Current, active RN license in the District of Columbia Current BLS and ACLS certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) required Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) highly preferred Nationally recognized nursing certification in emergency nursing (e.g., CEN) highly desirable About Howard University Hospital With over 150 years of caring for our community in the Washington, DC area, Howard University Hospital has a world-renowned reputation for high-quality, patient-centric care. Position Details Position Type Per Diem – Level III Commitment Department Emergency Department Shift Days | 7:30 AM – 8:00 PM Schedule Three (3) 12-hour shifts per week, set in four (4) week cycles Weekend Requirement Two weekends per month (24 hours/month) Holiday Requirement Every other major holiday required (New Year's, Thanksgiving, Christmas). Additional coverage expected for Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day Pay & Schedule This is a per diem, non-exempt position. Hourly rate is $75.00/hour (Fixed Rate).
