Description Medical Office Specialist (Medical Assistant)-Primary Care/Teaching-New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai-Full Time, Days, 9:45am to 6pm, M-F, Possible Weekends The Medical Office Specialist offers clinical and medical office support to physicians and surgeons. Assists in patient care and administrative duties necessary to deliver quality patient care. Performs various duties as a member of the health team in the treatment and care of patient and their families and also assists with tasks to support the unit. Participates and supports the health team in the direct patient care under the supervision of an RN/LPN or MD. Responsibilities Monitors patient flow in waiting room and resolves patient flow issues related to registration and post-visit processing Provides set-up of examination room and instruments in accordance with proper techniques established by hospital and infection control policies. Completes forms and requisitions as needed, managing charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately. Assists in the creation and maintenance of medical charts. Retrieves lab, pathology and diagnostic testing, and operative reports and data from computer systems Checks, verifies and updates insurance information utilizing internal or electronic sources. Obtains and documents managed care referrals, required pre-certifications and authorizations as necessary Supports surgical or procedure scheduling in conjunction with Surgical Coordinator or other similar role(s) verifying times with patients, preparing charts, pre-admissions and consent forms Maintains a working knowledge of New York State third party payer eligibility requirements for private and hospital billing Utilizes and understands basic medical terminology; able to complete visit encounter forms and enters ICD10-CM and CPT information into computerized systems as appropriate Assists in training, orientation and education of entry level and or/float staff Qualifications High School Diploma/GED. Description Position Title: Licensed Practical Nurse-Institute for Advanced Medicine-Mount Sinai West-Full Time-Days Position Summary: Participates in the application of the nursing process to an assigned group of patients. Demonstrates those behaviors which reflect the scientific knowledge, judgment, and technical skills of a Licensed Practical Nurse. Responsibilities A. Clinical/Technical/Service: Participates in the application of the nursing process to an assigned group of patients. Demonstrates those behaviors which reflect the scientific knowledge, judgment, and technical skills of a Licensed Practical Nurse Performs job duties under supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse. Demonstrates a competent level of approved skilled nursing care tasks and procedures using approved technical skills related to vital signs, pulse oximetry, venipuncture, starting standard peripheral IVs only (not midlines or long peripheral lines), urinary catheter insertion/catheter care; and simple dressings, remove/discontinue a peripheral line. Administer IV fluids, provided completion of annual competency IV therapy training. Monitors patients receiving blood and blood products and TPN under the direction of the RN, who administers the transfusion. Makes recommendations in the application of the nursing process. Participates in planning, and administers direct patient care, including activities of daily living (ADL). Performs point of care testing including blood glucose. Performs nursing procedures as defined in the nursing procedure manual. Administers medication as defined in nursing policy. ALL routes except cannot administer medications IV push/bolus (except for a Normal Saline or heparin flush) or via a central line. LPNs do not administer chemotherapy or immunotherapy. LPNs cannot administer first dose of an IV drug. The RN will administer the first dose of an IV drug and assess for side effects, after which the LPN can administer subsequent doses. LPNs working exclusively in chronic outpatient hemodialysis settings may, under the direct supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) and after completing an approved hemodialysis training and competency program, perform dialysis-related tasks as permitted by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) Office of the Professions and 10 NYCRR §700.4(b). See Section D for more details regarding role of LPNs in the Outpatient Hemodialysis setting. This exception does not permit independent practice or unsupervised access to central venous lines. Assists in patient assessment after the RN has completed the initial patient assessment, including pain management. Carries out medical and nursing orders. Cannot accept verbal orders or carry out RN standing orders. Makes, reports and records observations on assigned patients within the EMR. Observes and reports any signs and symptoms of change in a patient’s condition to the appropriate person. Participates in health teaching to patients and families following the RNs development of the teaching plan. Establishes an environment that promotes optimum physical and emotional comfort. Performs purposeful hourly care checks and supports the patient experience in accordance with Relationship Centered Care Professional Practice Model Organizes supplies and equipment necessary for carrying out the plan of care is identified and communicated by the charge nurse/designee. A Hemodialysis LPN may: • Administer bolus of medications by IV push in a chronic outpatient hemodialysis treatment center, excluding first dose administration which is administered by an RN. The RN will access and care for patient’s initial catheter use. Subsequently, and following the MSHS CVAD care policy, the LPN can: • Identify and set up supplies necessary for accessing a CVAD. • Initiate treatment with a CVAD. • Draw blood specimens from a CVAD. • Perform CVAD dressing change and exit site care. • Monitor and adjust flow rates of central venous catheter access device/line. • Intervene if there is a catheter/blood line disconnection or other complications associated with a CVAD. • Provide CVAD care at the end of dialysis treatment. Operations and administration Supports implementation of the mission, vision, goals and objectives of the department, throughout the clinical service and individual patient care units. Provides administrative and clinical oversight to ensure that all activity (staffing, support services, inter disciplinary collaboration, resources and financial viability) supports the goals of the organization. Works collaboratively with physician dyads and the healthcare team to promote patient care and regulatory standards. Maintains a nursing unit in compliance with all regulatory agency mandates, including the regulations of NYS DOH and The Joint Commission. Oversees 24-hour patient care delivery, throughput, staffing and processes to ensure efficient and effective operations. Prepares, implements and monitors unit budgets, including capital equipment allocation, budget variances, management of OT and vacancies according to MSHS financial goals. Maintains control of established positions and manages the recruitment and retention of qualified staff. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information. Evaluates nursing staff performance and mentors, coaches, counsels and disciplines staff as needed. Monitors availability and maintenance of nursing equipment and supplies. Conducts regular staff meetings to ensure communication with staff about progress, changes and compliance with all hospital policies and procedures. Encourages, recognizes and rewards staff participation in quality and safety initiatives, compliance and successes. Facilitates organizational change initiatives by using effective strategies. Leads a shared decision-making model by establishing a structure of shared governance, just culture and staff engagement in practice councils, departmental meetings and initiatives. Interprets and implements collective bargaining agreements affecting staff. Responds to protest of assignment in a timely manner as detailed in the collective bargaining agreement and discusses the resolution in unit staff meetings. Qualifications Bachelor of Science with a major in nursing required, master's in nursing or health related field preferred. 3 years minimum clinical nursing experience with some Charge Nurse/Supervisory experience preferred. Interventional Radiology/Cardiac Cath Lab experience required. Must have relevant clinical competence in area of nursing practice assigned. Licensed as a registered nurse with current registration in New York State.
