Demonstrates a competent level of approved skilled nursing care tasks and procedures using approved technical skills related to vital signs, pulse oximetry, venipuncture, starting standard peripheral IVs only (not midlines or long peripheral lines), urinary catheter insertion/catheter care; and simple dressings, remove/discontinue a peripheral line. 5. Administer IV fluids, provided completion of annual competency IV therapy training. 6. Monitors patients receiving blood and blood products and TPN under the direction of the RN, who administers the transfusion. 7. Makes recommendations in the application of the nursing process. 8. Participates in planning, and administers direct patient care, including activities of daily living (ADL). 9. Performs point of care testing including blood glucose. 10. Performs nursing procedures as defined in the nursing procedure manual. 11. Administers medication as defined in nursing policy. ALL routes except cannot administer medications IV push/bolus (except for a Normal Saline or heparin flush) or via a central line. LPNs do not administer chemotherapy or immunotherapy. 12. The training should include a written examination and competency demonstration. A Hemodialysis LPN may: • Administer bolus of medications by IV push in a chronic outpatient hemodialysis treatment center, excluding first dose administration which is administered by an RN. The RN will access and care for patient’s initial catheter use. Subsequently, and following the MSHS CVAD care policy, the LPN can: • Identify and set up supplies necessary for accessing a CVAD. • Initiate treatment with a CVAD. • Draw blood specimens from a CVAD. • Perform CVAD dressing change and exit site care. • Monitor and adjust flow rates of central venous catheter access device/line. • Intervene if there is a catheter/blood line disconnection or other complications associated with a CVAD. • Provide CVAD care at the end of dialysis treatment. Other Duties: • Orients patient’s family to new environment; develops rapport with patient’s family. • Relieves the Nurse Manager/Clinical Director as required. • Assists in data collection and analysis of Quality Assurance/CQI monitors; participate in implementation of follow up action. • Effectively utilizes the hospital computer system as it pertains to job responsibilities and in accordance with hospital policy. • Participate actively in Quality Improvement committees as assigned. • Assist other personnel as needed. • Keeps up to date with current trends pertinent to area of assignment. • Participates in continuing education activities; attends mandatory scheduled in-service programs; shared information gained at conferences with colleagues. • Responds to hospital codes (Code 9, Code Blue, Nurse Control, etc., as assigned. • Performs other duties as assigned to support the overall objectives of the department and organization. • Responds to Internal/External Disaster Codes as assigned. • Participates in nursing committees as required. • Attends monthly unit meetings. Safety: • Checks to ensure that emergency equipment is on hand and in good working order. • Recognizes and reports malfunction or failure of equipment in the area to Biomedical Engineering; takes appropriate action to repair/replace such equipment (e.g. ventilators, cardiac monitors, defibrillators, suction apparatus, pumps, Doppler, O2 tanks, and pacemaker). • Checks that all monitoring equipment and ventilator alarms are set according to standard. Position Qualifications (ICU/CCU): • Current NJ licensure as RN required. • ICU/CCU/CCRN preferred. • BLS, ACLS, and IV certifications required • Successful completion of in-house Intensive Care Orientation Program Required. • At least 1 year of Critical Care or Intensive care experience required. Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required, or proof of enrollment in an accredited BSN program at the time of hire, with the expectation that the degree will be completed within three (3) years of the hire date . For ICU/CCU Per-Diem Roles: A minimum of three (3) years of critical care experience required. Job Setting/Physical Demands: • All Intensive Care areas. • Frequently prolonged standing/walking. • Lifts, positions, pushes, and/or transfers to patients. • Protective clothing worn face shields, gloves, impermeable gowns.
