Assists research nurses with patient protocol-related events. Participates in the education of students and new hires. Performs procedures such as discontinuing hepatic arterial infusion lines, skin biopsies, lumbar punctures, Ommaya taps with or without drug instillation, venipuncture, and intratumoral injections. Assists with the management of unscheduled patients. Serves as the liaison for new patient referrals from outside physicians by assessing protocol eligibility and coordinating appointments based on physician availability. Schedules special procedures with the appropriate departments, including CVC/PICC insertions, angiograms, image-guided biopsies or aspirations, fine needle aspirations, hepatic arterial embolizations, and infusions. Collects patient test results, acts on abnormalities, and presents results to the physician. Monitors and follows up on test results, including laboratory results, diagnostic imaging, pathology reports, and other studies, and acts on abnormalities. Requests consultations and communicates with other services and outside providers to coordinate patient care. Orders patient medications, treatments, and tests within authorized delegated prescriptive authority and consistent with institutional policies and procedures. Other Activities Collaborates with the research team on the design of clinical protocols, creation or review of order sets, and management of protocol-related events. Assesses patients for protocol eligibility and notifies the research team of potential protocol candidates. Assesses patients for symptoms, side effects, and toxicities related to standard treatments and investigational studies. May deliver medical presentations within the institution and at the local, state, and national levels. Performs periodic duties as requested by supervising physicians and permitted by state and federal law. Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills. Clinical Research Participates in clinical research by completing database forms, reviewing medical records, and interviewing patients and families. Collaborates with medical staff, research nurses, and other healthcare professionals to complete research initiatives. Administrative Activities Completes paperwork, which may include letters, FMLA forms, disability forms, and insurance documentation, by manually entering information or preparing dictated correspondence. Completes peer-to-peer reviews and provides information to facilitate insurance authorization for testing and treatment. This position offers unique experience in our community pediatric intensive care unit, for an individual who wishes to pursue a career in pediatric intensive care. The section of Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics is a multidisciplinary team of attending critical care physicians, advanced practice providers (nurse practitioners/physician assistants), committed to the care of patients suffering from a life-threatening illness or injury. Currently, the critical care intensive care units in the community have capacity for 14 patients. The NP/PA Instructor will work alongside Faculty colleagues, advanced practice providers, and occasionally pediatric residents in the care of children with chronic and acute illness requiring intensive care in the PICU. The woodlands PICU opened in April 2017 and provides assisted ventilation or other advanced support, such as oscillatory ventilation, nitric oxide administration or cardiovascular pressor support. The community ICU also provides care for children who require long-term technology support, those with residual PICU morbidities requiring transition to home, and the management of children who require more intensive medical support. Location: The primary clinical site is at Texas Children's Woodlands Campus, an extension of the largest pediatric hospital in the United States, and an affiliated hospital of Baylor College of Medicine. Role responsibilities include but are not limited to: Day-to-day care of children with acute and chronic illness requiring critical care. Active role in education of trainees when present. Participation in on-call schedule for the pediatric intensive care unit. Liaison and collaboration with stakeholders and consultants throughout the community hospital.
