In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for the provision, coordination, and assurance of comprehensive nursing care using nursing process and pertinent standards of care, the diagnosis of illness and physical conditions, and performance of therapeutic, corrective, and prescriptive measures of the designated inpatient or outpatient patient population within a collaborative practice agreement established with a specific physician on the staff of NYU Hospitals Center Job Responsibilities: Plans and organizes care to meet individual patient needs and to ensure appropriate clinical resource utilization per protocols, pathways, and other means. Monitors and trends the cost effectiveness of the position, particularly as it relates to the efficiency and performance indicators established for the service. Assists in the preparation, implementation, and evaluation of research protocols when applicable. Works collaboratively with nursing and other disciplines in the development and implementation of clinical studies within the area of expertise. Uses evidence-based health care literature to advise and support appropriate practice changes within the designated service. Participates in the development and monitoring of patient outcomes per established practice protocols for purposes of quality and performance improvement. Serves as a clinical expert and resource for the education of peers and other health professionals. Maintains current expertise in area of practice. Prescribes in-patient and discharge medications according to New York State law, including controlled substances with DEA authorization. Works collaboratively with the attending physician, consulting physician(s), and other disciplines to identify, develop, and implement an appropriate plan of care that maximizes individual patient/family preference and enhances quality, access, and cost-effective outcomes. Formulates the plan of care, along with the attending physician, patient and family, based on expected goals of care and length of stay. Orders customary laboratory, radiological and diagnostic studies per practice protocols, differentiates between normal/abnormal findings and follows protocols for abnormal findings, which may include referral to consulting physicians per customary pattern of the attending MD or with the collaborating physician. Performs complete health history, physical examination and psychosocial assessment of patients within the designated practice or clinical unit. Functions as a respectful member of the health care team. Participates in designated activities related to professional nursing standards and regulations of relevant outside agencies. Demonstrates knowledge of the organizations Service Standards and incorporates them into the performance of responsibilities. Description A nurse practitioner (NP) as described in Title VIII, Article 139 section 6910 of the New York Education Law is a RN who has earned a separate certification as an NP through advanced clinical nursing education in a distinct specialty area of practice. Nurse practitioners are independent practitioners who diagnose, treat, and prescribe for a patient's condition that falls within their specialty area of practice. NOTE: Medical orders, progress notes and treatments plans are not required to be countersigned by a physician. Responsibilities CLINICAL PRACTICE 1. Assesses the health status of patients/families by means of comprehensive health history and physical examination. 2. Initiates and orders selected therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, consultations and laboratory examination, prescribes medication regimens, interprets findings and alters plan of care according to accepted standards of care and practice guidelines 3. Educates and counsels in the areas of health promotion, maintenance, disease prevention, and management of acute/chronic illnesses. 4. Documents findings and plan of care in the patient's medical record. 5. Consults with physician according to established standards, policies, procedures, and protocols. 6. Nurse Practitioner experience of at least one year preferred Licensure: New York State License with current registration as a registered nurse. State Certification: Certified by the New York State Department of Education as a Nurse Practitioner with current registration as follows: a. Is a graduate of New York State registered Nurse Practitioner Program or equivalent OR is certified as a Nurse Practitioner by a national association via examination. b. Has completed a pharmacy component of not less than the required semester hours or the equivalent AND has been instructed in New York State and Federal Laws relating to prescriptions and recordkeeping (3-hour course). c. Has a Collaborative Practice Agreement with a physician and designated protocols if less than 3600 hours experience as a practicing Nurse Practitioner. OR Has a Collaborative Relationship with a physician based on employment in clinical practice in the NP role at Mount Sinai Hospital. If there is a documented work history as a Nurse Practitioner with greater than 3600 practice hours. Please note all NPs regardless of their status will be placed on an FPPE initially) Education: Master's degree program designed to prepare a NP to diagnose, treat, and prescribe for a patient's condition that fall within their specialty area of practice or the successful completion of an approved supplemental education program, i.e., post-Masters NP certificate. Experience: Previous progressive experience relevant to the area of clinical practice required. For all NPs hired effective June 1, 2019, National Board Certification in Advanced Practice Nursing required.
