A Brief Overview The Surgical Technologist I is an integral member of the surgical team. The Technologist I works under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse/Circulating Nurse. He/she functions in a scrub role, providing assistance to the operating surgeon and assistants. He/she also provides assistance in preparations for procedures and the clean-up afterwards. This individual works collaboratively with the entire surgical team. Demonstrates knowledge and ability to expertly prepare and operate standard equipment (e.g. nitrogen powered drills, balancing of microscopes, basic audio-visual equipment) prior to and during the various specialty procedures. Demonstrates knowledge and skill to expertly prepare, program, and operate specialized equipment (e.g. navigational systems, lasers, cusa) prior to and during various specialty procedures. Obtains and assembles positional devices (fracture tables, Jackson tables, cerebellar headrests). Practices safety precautions throughout the perioperative phase of patient care. Handles all “sharps” in a safe and protective manner in consideration of self and others in supportive roles, such as Core Techs, environmental services, and CPD staff. Participates in “time-outs” prior to the start of surgical procedures according to hospital policy guidelines. Verifies medications, concentrations, expiration dates of all medications received on the sterile field in concert with the circulating RN. Handles and dispenses medications, irrigation solutions, and flushes (e.g. epi: 1:1000, local anesthetics, antibiotic irrigation) to surgeon within the sterile field. Handles, prepares, and dispenses hemostatic agents (e.g. thrombin, tisseal, floseal) to the surgeon within the sterile field.
