This leadership role partners closely with the Executive Director and department leaders to ensure residents receive high-quality, compassionate, and individualized care that enhances quality of life, dignity, and wellbeing. This client requires hands-on assistance with personal care, repositioning, toileting, incontinence care, hygiene and other activities of daily living. Both day and night shifts are available. Exact shift times, lengths and available days will depend on the client’s care plan and current scheduling needs. The ideal caregiver will understand that caring for a bedbound client requires patience, attention to detail, physical capability and a strong commitment to protecting the client’s comfort, privacy, dignity and safety. Required Caregiving Experience Applicants must have direct professional experience caring for clients who are bedbound or require extensive hands-on assistance. Applicants should be experienced with: Bed baths and personal hygiene Toileting and incontinence care Perineal care Changing protective undergarments Dressing and grooming Oral care Bed mobility and repositioning Pressure relief and comfort measures Changing bed linens with the client in bed Meal preparation and feeding assistance Hydration reminders and monitoring Skin observation Safe body mechanics Fall prevention and safety monitoring Supporting clients with limited or no independent mobility Following written care plans Accurately documenting completed care Experience using a gait belt, Hoyer lift or other approved transfer equipment is strongly preferred. Repositioning and Bed Mobility Because the client is bedbound, proper repositioning and comfort monitoring are essential parts of the assignment. Responsibilities may include: Repositioning the client according to the approved care plan Assisting the client from side to side in bed Using pillows or approved positioning supports Helping maintain safe and comfortable body alignment Monitoring for redness, swelling, bruising or skin concerns Keeping bedding clean, dry and free from wrinkles Reporting pain or discomfort during movement Using approved body mechanics to protect both the client and caregiver Requesting assistance when repositioning cannot be completed safely Caregivers must never pull, drag or reposition the client in an unsafe manner. Any redness, skin breakdown, open area, swelling, bruising, unusual warmth, pain or other concern must be reported to the Helping Hearts office immediately and documented according to company procedures. Transfers and Mobility Equipment Although the client is bedbound, some assignments may require transfers or the use of approved mobility equipment according to the care plan. Responsibilities may include: Assisting with bed mobility Helping the client move between the bed and an approved chair or wheelchair Using a gait belt when directed Assisting with safe positioning in a wheelchair Using a mechanical or Hoyer lift when required Following all one-person or two-person assistance requirements Checking equipment before use Following all transfer and fall prevention instructions Requesting assistance when a transfer cannot be completed safely Caregivers must never attempt an unsafe transfer or use a Hoyer lift, mechanical lift, gait belt or other equipment without the required knowledge, training and authorization. Meal, Hydration and Household Support Depending on the care plan, caregivers may also be responsible for: Preparing appropriate meals and snacks Assisting with feeding when required Encouraging regular fluid intake Observing and documenting food and fluid intake Following dietary instructions and client preferences Washing dishes and cleaning the meal preparation area Completing light housekeeping Washing and folding the client’s laundry Changing bed linens Removing trash Organizing care supplies Keeping the client’s immediate environment clean and free from safety hazards Caregivers must immediately report difficulty swallowing, coughing during meals, refusal to eat or drink, vomiting or other significant concerns. Non-Medical Health Support Helping Hearts provides non-medical personal support. Caregivers must remain within their authorized responsibilities and follow the client’s approved care plan. Responsibilities may include: Providing medication reminders Assisting with approved blood glucose monitoring when included in the care plan Documenting readings when required Observing food and fluid intake Monitoring the client’s physical, emotional and behavioral condition Reporting pain, swelling, bruising, redness or skin concerns Reporting changes in breathing, alertness, appetite, mobility or behavior Following established emergency and office notification procedures Completing accurate electronic documentation during every shift Caregivers must immediately contact the Helping Hearts office regarding any significant change in the client’s condition. Caregivers must not assume that another person has already reported the concern. Day Shift Responsibilities Day shift responsibilities may include: Assisting with the client’s morning routine Providing a bed bath and personal hygiene Assisting with dressing and grooming Providing toileting and incontinence care Repositioning the client according to the care plan Preparing meals and assisting with feeding Encouraging hydration Changing linens and completing laundry Completing light housekeeping Providing companionship and meaningful engagement Monitoring the client’s condition and comfort Completing required documentation in real time Day shift caregivers must remain attentive and actively complete all responsibilities listed in the client’s care plan. Night Shift Responsibilities Night shift caregivers must remain fully awake, alert and attentive throughout the entire shift. Nighttime responsibilities may include: Completing scheduled safety and comfort checks Repositioning the client according to the care plan Providing toileting and incontinence care Changing protective undergarments and soiled linens Monitoring the client’s breathing, comfort and overall condition Providing medication reminders when scheduled and authorized Keeping the client’s immediate environment clean and safe Completing approved nighttime household responsibilities Responding immediately when the client needs assistance Preparing the client and care environment for the morning routine Documenting all care, observations and concerns in real time Sleeping, napping, dozing, lying down to rest or closing your eyes for extended periods is strictly prohibited, even when the client is sleeping. Failure to remain awake and attentive may result in immediate removal from the assignment and additional corrective action, up to and including termination. Physical Requirements Caring for a bedbound client can be physically demanding.
