Forensic RN - St. Vincent Medical Center Job Summary: The Forensic Registered Nurse (RN) has a specialized education and training who, with increasing independence, utilizes the nursing process, current evidence-based clinical knowledge, and the International Association of Forensic Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice (ANA & IAFN 2016) to provide professional nursing care for patients across the life-span who have been affected by crime, unlawful acts, trauma, and intentional and unintentional harm. The Forensic Nurse integrates knowledge of nursing science, criminal justice, public health, and forensic science and utilizes a trauma-informed approach to assess the medical-legal needs of patients, collaborate with health team members to coordinate patient care, anticipate the outcomes of nursing interventions, and set criteria for the quality of patient care. Essential Functions: In collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team, conducts initial and ongoing patient assessment, analyzes assessment data, creates a plan of care, implements treatment, and evaluates treatment effectiveness and safety planning throughout the process and at discharge. • Administers medications in a safe manner, consistent with the State of Practice and Bon Secours Mercy Health policies and procedures • Serves as point of contact for patients' care coordination throughout hospital departments. • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams composed of medical professionals, community and system-based advocates, social services workers, faith community leaders, law enforcement, and legal practitioners. Maintains departmental quality assurance through active participation in monthly peer and case reviews, ensuring all forensic documentation and care align with ANA and IAFN (2016) standards. • Applies the nursing process to assess, diagnose, and treat individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations affected by violence and trauma, through identification, management, and prevention of intentional and unintentional injuries and death. • Applies nursing practice to the care of individuals across the lifespan and integrates forensic and nursing sciences in the assessment and care of populations affected by physical, psychological, or social violence, trauma, or death including, but not limited to, sexual assault, intimate partner violence, human trafficking, physical abuse, maltreatment, and neglect, elder abuse and vulnerable persons, and violence resulting in injury or death • Provides episodic care for populations affected by trauma, including those legally defined as victims, suspects, the accused, and perpetrators. • Acts as a patient safety advocate by participating in ongoing quality improvement in the department. • Assesses the need for and implements unit-based activities (quality assessment, in-services, etc.). • Provides education to patients, staff, communities, and populations in the prevention, detection, and treatment of the effects of violence. • Accepts responsibility and accountability for ethical/legal functioning. A LVN Charge Nurse (Licensed Vocational Nurse) is a licensed professional nurse directly under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Nursing Services. The Charge Nurse is responsible for staff assignment and provides overall supervision of resident care activities. LVN Charge Nurse (Licensed Vocational Nurse) QUALIFICATIONS • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or an approved LVN program. • Current nursing licensure in the state in which practicing. • Strong organizational skills. • Possess, as a minimum, training in a skilled nursing care facility, hospital, or other related medical facility. • Possess leadership ability and the willingness to work with and supervise professional and non- professional personnel. • Knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures. • Ability to Read, write and speak the English language. • Possess mental and physical health. SUPERVISION • Meet with unit personnel, on a regular basis, to assist in identifying and correcting problem areas, and/or the improvement of services. • Review and evaluate assigned personnel and make written evaluations to the RN Supervisor or Assistant Director of Nurses. • Coordinate Nursing service with other departments and nursing units. • Notify the attending physician, RN Supervisor and Director of Nurses when a resident is discharged without approval. Assure that appropriate documentation is made in accordance with the facility’s established policies and procedures. • Assure that a stock of medications, medical supplies, equipment, etc., is maintained at all times. Requisition equipment and supply needs as required. • Initiate investigation of accidents and unusual occurrences and make the necessary written report to the Director of Nurses as established in the facility’s policies and procedures. • Notify the resident’s attending/alternate physician, as well as the resident’s legal guardian/representative, when the resident has a significant change of condition or becomes critically ill or injured, as outlined within facility’s established policies. • Work with the facility’s consultants as necessary and implement recommended changes as directed by the RN Supervisor of the Director of Nurses. • Investigate complaints and grievances and make necessary oral/written reports to the RN Supervisor or Director of Nurses. • In cases of death, notify the funeral home and ensure that the body is properly prepared/cleaned for pick-up. • Evaluate emergencies and determine emergency measures to be used, including the use of chemical or mechanical restraints. Notify the RN Supervisor and physician and record and follow orders. • Assure that the unit area is maintained in a clean and safe manner for resident comfort and convenience, by ensuring that necessary equipment and supplies are maintained to perform such duties/services. • Assist in standardizing the methods in which work will be accomplished. Responsibilities The Registered Nurse is responsible for the delivery of safe patient care utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. Provides direct patient care within the scope of practice. The Registered Nurse also directs and guides patient/family teaching and activities of other nursing personnel while maintaining standards of care in the ICU. The Registered Nurse is directly responsible and accountable for the care given to his/her assigned patients. They communicate with the physician about changes in the patient’s clinical condition including hemodynamic monitoring, results of diagnostic studies and abnormal results and symptomatology. Is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition and/or response to treatment. Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality. Qualifications EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING 1. Current and valid state RN License.2. Current BLS certificate upon hire and maintain current.3. Completion of Critical Care Course preferred. 4. Basic Arrythmia Interpretation within 30 days of hire.5. Current ACLS certificate 30 days upon hire and maintain current. 6. Minimum of one year as a staff RN in acute care hospital, critical care preferred.7. Critical Care RN (CCRN) Certification preferred. 8. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
